>From: roberts@sunray.UUCP (Robert Stanley) Newsgroups: rec.arts.sf-lovers Subject: Nebula Awards Date: 4 Nov 89 19:07:56 GMT Reply-To: roberts@cognos.UUCP (Robert Stanley) Organization: Cognos Inc., Ottawa, Canada A couple of weeks ago someone asked for a complete list of awards, and I didn't see anyone post the Nebulas. Apologies in advance if this duplicates a previous posting, but here's the basic information. Note: the Nebulas are awarded by the Science Fiction Writers of America (the SFWA), and there is no external participation in the process. There are four basic categories which are awarded annually, and a fifth (the Grand Master Award) which is awarded occasionally (nine times to date). In addition, Best Dramatic Presentation was awarded only three times (1973-1975) before being voted out of existence, and there has been one Special Award (to "Star Wars" in 1977). The Nebula Awards were started in 1965. For those of you who like statistics, and excluding the four film awards, there have been 61 recipients of a total of 102 Nebulas. This represents 23 years of the four basic categories, with two dual awards (ties) and one non-award (short story in 1970), plus 9 Grand Master awards. Of the 61 recipients, three have only a single half share in a Nebula by virtue of dual authorship (Gordon Eklund, Spider Robinson, Jeanne Robinson), and 26 have received more than one Nebula. One award (Lisa Tuttle in 1981) was refused by the recipient. The winningest authors are: Robert Silverberg [5] Arthur C. Clarke [3] (and also the Grand Master Award) Samuel R. Delany [4] Fritz Leiber [3] (and also the Grand Master Award) Isaac Asimov [2] (and also the Grand Master Award) Greg Bear [3] Harlan Ellison [3] Ursula K. Le Guin [3] James Tiptree, Jr. [3] (includes 1 as Raccoona Sheldon) (I know, her real name was Alice Sheldon, anyway) Kate Wilhelm [3] Roger Zelazny [3] Clifford D. Simak [1] (and also the Grand Master Award) 13 other authors have received 2 Nebulas apiece Gregory Benford [1.5] (shared one with Gordon Eklund) Enjoy, and feel free to mail me corrections.
