Of the many George MacDonald fantasies, five are consistiently in print: the two Curdie books, "At the Back of The North Wind", "Phantastes" & "Lilith". I've only read the two Curdie stories and "Phantastes", even though I own all five plus "Evenor". (Regular readers will recognize that I'm a sucker for a well told juvenile). The Curdie books are good, classic fairy tales of a princess, a miner's son in a magical country of goblins and evil monsters. "Phanastes" was tougher going, being a young man's journey of self-discovery through Faerie (I have a mild allergy to allegory).
