Subject: [*] Caesar II Demo 1.0 - Roman city building

Here's the Caesar II demo...

This game reminds me of SimCity 2000, with some extra details. For
instance, one can query individuals for their opinions on the city. Looks
pretty cool, if you're into sim/strategy games.

Demo specifics... partially functional (can only perform city
functions... military and regional functions are disabled).

System Requirements (from the included Docs):

Minimum System Requirements:
   68040 25MHz or better
   System 7.1 or better
   8 MB RAM
2X CD-ROM (not required for demo, obviously)
   6.5 MB HD Space

For Best Performance:
   Power PC
   System 7.5
   16 MB RAM
   4x CD-ROM (also not required)
   256 Color

Support the Mac... upload cool stuff to this site!

Subject: [*] CommuniGate Fax Gate 1.10

The Fax Gate is a CommuniGate communication module supporting fax
messaging. It converts messages to the fax format and sends them to remote
fax machines. The module can receive incoming faxes and route them as
messages to the recipient(s). The module is multi-line, i.e. it can support
several fax lines simultaneously.

When installed together with the Voice Gate, the Fax Gate can route
incoming faxes to any recipient (locally or over e-mail), it can
implement fax-on-demand and other fax-center features.

When installed together with the Print Gate, the Fax Gate can
automatically print incoming faxes.

The CommuniGate Fax Gate can also redirect incoming faxes to any Internet
E-mail account or other fax numbers.

The Fax Gate supports Class 2 and Class 2.0 fax modems connected via
serial ports. Make sure that your modem really supports Class 2 or
Class 2.0 faxing before you try it with CommuniGate Fax Gate. Many old
fax modms support fax Class 1 only.

To compose and send messages as faxes, you can use the CommuniGator
application, as well as the print driver "FaxSender".

The latest version of the CommuniGate System components can be obtained from:
<http://www.stalker.com> or <ftp://ftp.stalker.com>

To be notified about updates: send any message to
   <mailto:cgate-on@stalker.com>

Please download the CommuniGate System Guide (at least the INS- Installation
chapter) before you install the CommuniGate System for the first time.

Also, see the ReadMe files included.

Revision History for this update

Station ID of the receiving fax machine.

Subject: [*] CommuniGate UUCP Gate 2.1.2 (now w/TCP and ADSP support)

The UUCPGate is a CommuniGate communication module supporting E-mail message
transfer using the uucp protocol and regular modem connections; uucp
communications do not require a direct Internet connection (i.e. they do not
use the TCP/IP protocol). Besides, the UUCPGate supports the uucp mail
transfer protocol over the Internet (TCP) and AppleTalk (ADSP).

The UUCPGate module supports multi-line communications and it can support
connections with several other uucp systems (so your CommuniGate system can
be a network provider for other uucp e-mail systems).

The UUCPGate module can work together with the SMTPGate module providing both
TCP/IP and UUCP Internet e-mail. The CommuniGate Router takes care of
directing messages to the proper gate.

See the ReadMe files included.

The latest version can be found at: http://www.stalker.com or

Subject: [*] DiskSurveyor 1.2 FAT - Lots of new features

The wait is over... Nothing could stop it... Not a couple snowstorms
(although losing power for 2 days did slow me down)... Not even a bout with
a particularly nasty strain of the flu...

...It's finally here... A new version of DiskSurveyor with some cool new
features, as well as some of the most requested:

 * Added a 'Virtual Disk' capability. Saved DiskSummary files can be
loaded (either through drag and drop or the File menu or double-
clicking the file) allowing the user to view disks (such as CDROMs)
   which aren't presently mounted.
 * Added ability to save DiskSummary files from the File menu.
 * Now correctly displays folder/file names in 'double-byte' character
   sets (such as Japanese).
 * Added capability to display folders/files in different fonts, sizes
and widths. (Especially nice for those of us with less than perfect
   vision.)
 * New multiple-page Preferences dialog.
 * Can now use Tabs to delimit information saved in DiskSummary files.
 * Displays the percentage of the disk that is used.
 * When pointing to folders and files, if the folder/file uses more
than 1% of the disk, the percentage is displayed.
 * Can now be registered through Kagi Shareware, which accepts credit
   cards, overseas currency/checks, etc.

DiskSurveyor doesn't promise to make your hard drive any bigger, but it
does show you, GRAPHICALLY, what or who's hogging all that space. Click on
a folder and zoom in for a closer look. Or zoom back out. And with the
press of a key, you can create DiskSummary files that list all the files
found on CDROMs or any other volume. No longer will you have to waste
valuable time navigating through folder after folder trying to figure out
which files need to be archived or trashed to free up precious disk space.

DiskSurveyor requires System 7 or greater and at least 256 colors (or
shades of gray) are recommended.

DiskSurveyor. An exciting new way to look at your hard drive and CDROMs.

Subject: (Q) NFS client software

I would like to run an NFS client application on my Mac so that I can mount
a directory on an NFS server. I've tried to make use of NFS/Share
(currently trying to use ver. 1.4.3 under Mac OS 7.5.5 on a Power Mac 7500)
for many years without much success. In particular, my Mac is on one
network (aaa.bbb.ccc.ddd) and the NFS server is on another network
(mmm.nnn.ooo.ppp). Has anyone had success in using NFS/Share under this
configuration? Is there any trick I need to know about?

I just discovered that Intercon Systems, the developer and distributor of
NFS/Share, is being bought out by another company. In light of that, and
the uncertainty about the future product line, has anyone found some other
NFS client software application to be reliable, which they wish to
recommend? And, in particular, has anyone found an application that works
reliably when the client and server are on totally different networks?

Thanks for all help that is provided!

box by simulating entry of a "RETURN" character after the
dialog has been open for a certain number of seconds.?

I couldn't find any in the Application, Configuration, or
User Interface sections of the Info-Mac archive. Such
utilities like this were posted in the past.

Thanks,

I'm having difficulties with my ARA connection from my home desktop 7200 to

I have downloaded (from many very helpful folks) several scripts all of

When I press the connect button in ARA, I instantly get a -43 error message.

Please email to the list or direct.

Do you have virtual memory turned on? This would give such symptons as you

Very likely the battery. I keep waiting for mine to die too (5 years

I beg to differ. The problem *is* with McMall. They, in turn, have a
problem with FedEx. The customer's only direct relationship is with McMall
and that is the organization with which the customer has to deal. However,
I don't think a boycott of either organization is in order at this stage.
Both are responsible firms and, even if the person with whom the customer
dealt was not the most customer-friendly, I am sure the situation will be
resolved in a reasonable manner. Nonetheless, I think it is prudent to
notify the credit card company about the situation and the intent to
withold payment until the situation has been rectified.

I STRONGLY DISAGREE!! The couple whose monitor failed to arrive contracted
with MacMall NOT Federal Express. It was MacMall who contracted with
FEDEX. So the couple's problem is with MacMall (and MacMall has a problem
with FEDEX).

Further any company in this day and age which has any market savvy at all
works on the principle that THE CUSTOMER IS ALWAYS RIGHT.

Subject: Powerbook 180, 1400, and PC MCIA modems

Dear Macusers all over the cyber-space,

I have several questions to ask. I will be very grateful to everyone of
you who will respond.

 --------------------

Our office has a Powerbook 180 with a trackball. Occasionally the
trackball fails to function properly causing the cursor on screen to skip
or not move at all. Cleaning the rubber rollers inside the trackball hole
with alcohol almost doesn't help. I heard that these rollers have to be
replaced to fix this problem. If it is true, then where can I order the new
rollers from? (I'd prefer replacing them myself, avoiding taking the
computer to the expensive tech support services). Perhaps there is a
simpler way of fixing it without replacing the rollers? Does anyone
know of one?

 --------------------

Secondly, we have recently purchased a Powerbook 1400, and generally
we are satisfied with it's performance except for that of its removable
floppy disk drive module. There are overly too many errors when we
copy to/read from floppy disks. We may even use a brand new disk,
however, the computer will still say that there is a "disk error". It
happens so often that the only way to avoid it is to reformat the disks
before the use. But on several occasions it refused to format even brand
new disks. But if I use them on other computers, they don't fail at all.

Is the disk drive module not tuned up properly? What do I do to solve
this problem? Has anyone else experienced something like this?

 --------------------

I wander if anyone of you can share with me an opinion as to which PC
MCIA modem card would be the best to be used on Powerbook 1400 in
the former Soviet Union, particularly in Ukraine. These countries are
known for their unreliable, noisy telephone lines.

I've read a review in MacWorld magazine on Global Village and US
Robotics modem cards, which was very informative, however, these
modems were tested on the US telephone system. Despite their
excellent performance, they may not always be the best for CIA
countries.

I am not planning to fly into stratosphere. All I need is a reliable
modem that would be able to uphold a connection up to 14,400 bps, and
whose software would be Mac savvy. Can anyone, who has been to
these countries, recommend one?

Igor Kholobaev

The speed increase you may see from converting the printer to Ethernet is
entirely dependent on the type of jobs you are sending to it.

If the network connection is the bottleneck, then you should see some
degree of speed increase. If the computational speed of the printer is the
bottleneck, then the network will make no difference, since more often than
not the I/O system will be ready to send more data before the printer is
ready to recieve it.

Here's a pathological example. This file:
%!PS-Adobe-2.0
/Box { %def
0 0 moveto len 0 rlineto 0 len rlineto len neg 0 rlineto closepath fill
} bind def
/x_tr { len 0 translate } bind def

 } for
 grestore
} for

showpage

...takes about 2 minutes to rip on my LaserMaster Unity 1800PMR, which has
48Mb of RAM, a 133MHz processor, and an Ethernet interface.

The print time wouldn't be significantly different if I was connected via
LocalTalk, because the job is so small that network transfer time is
immaterial. The job is sent virtually instantly, then the printer has to
chew on it for 2 minutes.

If your jobs are similar, then a faster network interface won't have a
significant effect on print speed.

>Mac-Zone says that throughput (No. of pages printed pr. min), will

If by throughput they are referring to engine marking speed, then they are
correct that the network speed will have very little effect on throughput.

This Unity has an engine marking speed of 16ppm [or so]. If I ask for 16
copies of the file above [by inserting -/#copies 16 def- into the file
before the showpage], the first one will take 2 minutes to appear, but then
a minute after that, I'll have 16 copies. If I send 16 copies of the
entire file, I'm not going to get all 16 pages in a minute, regardless of
network speed.

Subject: SOLVED (was:Re: Networking 2 Macs [Q]?)

OK, here is what the situation is:

The Ethernet card we had purchased for the VX was a closeout that came with
no documentation and no software. It is an Asante 10BaseT+Thinnet card,
just a couple years old and only $25.

We had gone to the Asante web site and downloaded the latest and greatest
(L&G) software driver (ver 5.6.0), supposedly designed for any card 10Base
or 100Base they have made.

However, it would not work in our application of the software and hardware.
I asked for help on various newsgroups and on my local Mac User Group
(Seattle dBUG) FirstClass BBS.

Someone on a newgroup mentioned drivers. We had the L&G which we had
downloaded, so that was not the problem. Right?

I have an extensive library of Mac books, so decided last night to become
an "Expert In Ethernet Interconnectivity Options" (EIEIO) and Friday
morning began to read everything I could find.

One book mentioned that software must be matched to the card being used. I
began to think about that.

I visited the Asante web site and all they had was the L&G*. So I used
Netscape to search their FTP server. I found an older version, 5.5.4.

It worked first time! So now we have a pretty fast LAN and I am now an
(EIEIO) to boot.

Thanks for all your help here.

And keep those old versions of stuff, you never know when they might just come
in handy.

Peace,
Caryn

wonder). It came with a "SigmaDesign Pageview GS" (wha?) monitor (so, the
A4-type). I'm missing out on the video cable however. Some phonecalls
later, including Apple (I'm in The Netherlands, btw) came up with zip:
unavailable, unbuyable.

The cable should be 15pins (male, to fit the IIsi) to 9pins (female, to fit
the monitor). Now, if someone could provide me with a clue as to the wiring
diagram, I could fashion one myself I guess! Any idea's? My significant

Thanks in advance for your consideration and any info!

I have ordered twice from MacMall and have twice been completely

Both orders arrived later than I was told they would arrive. Getting
a customer service rep on the phone is next to impossible (I hung up
after an hour a couple of times). The sales person the second time told
me I would have to be at home to accept delivery, which I found out
(too late) from FedEx was not true. The first time it took 3 months
for them to credit the shipping charge to my Visa.

I have ordered from MacWarehouse, MacZone, and MacConnection with
nothing but good results, but I will never deal with MacMall again.
