Subject: [*] Cache Killer 1.2 - for Netscape, Cyberdog, AOL, and Internet Ex

Cache Killer is a small utility that deletes the Netscape Navigator,
Cyberdog, America Online, and/or Microsoft Internet Explorer disk caches.
It can be configured to delete the disk caches periodically or every time
it is run.

Deleting the web browser caches will regain valuable hard drive space.
Also, the system's Desktop files won't have to keep track of the hundreds
of individual cache files.

Cache Killer requires AppleScript, which is included with System 7.5 or later.

Cache Killer is freeware, and may be freely distributed and copied so long
as it is not modified and all Read Me documents are included with all
distributions. If you wish to include any version of Cache Killer on a
CD-ROM or floppy disk collection, you must get permission from the author.

Cache Killer was created by Scott Harralson. Further information on Cache
Killer can be found at http://web2.airmail.net/sdh/killer. Send any

Subject: [*] caveman-sound-111.sit.hqx

This is version 1.1.1 of the Caveman Sound system. It should replace previous
versions of the library (caveman-sound-11.sit.hqx). This version fixes a
minor bug that would cause havoc if sounds were removed from the sound system
and new sounds were loaded. It also plugs a few memory leaks.

What is The Caveman Sound System?

The Caveman Sound System is a high-level library of C routines for playing
sound on the Macintosh. These routines were designed with games in mind,
but could be used for other purposes as well. They have been included in
my own products such as PowerPong, and I indend to use them in future
projects.

Subject: [*] Disk Charmer 3.0.9; disk erase/copy/verify utility

http://www.kagi.com/authors/fab/diskcharmer.html

You don't have to wait for Rhapsody to initialize disks in background...

Disk Charmer is a neat utility that lets you conveniently erase and
copy disks, and handle disk images in DiskCopy and DiskDup+ format.
Disk Charmer lets you create larger disks: you gain 9K on 800K disks,
19K on HD disks, 1.5MB on Zips.

At least System 7 is required.
Help Balloons are everywhere.
Disk Charmer has a nice, modeless interface.
It fully supports drag&drop.
It supports the handy "Undo" feature we all know and love.

New since version 3.0.8:

* when erasing a disk such as the System RAM Disk with the "Eject disks
when done" option active, Disk Charmer attempted to erase the RAM Disk
every time it was remounted, over and over again (thanks to Peppino Ventura
for reporting this);

* fixed a cosmetic bug reported (once again) by Peppino

* fixed a silly bug that prevented detection of a MacOS bug fix

* other minor tweaks and fixes

* compiled with CodeWarrior 11

* linked with MoreFiles 1.4.6

Subject: [*] IE 3.01 AutoSearch Changer - Change the engine in Internet Expl

With the release of the final version of Internet Explorer 3.01 for the
Mac, Microsoft has included a nice batch of very useful enhancements to
make browsing the web easier. One of these features is called
'AutoSearch.' In the location bar, where you would type an address to
visit, you can also type a question mark (?), followed by a space, then
followed by the words that you wish to search for. However, you were
stuck with using the default Microsoft/Yahoo search engine that is coded
into Internet Explorer. With IE 3.01 AutoSearch Changer, you can change
the AutoSearch engine to any of the popular engines.

*I would advise that you only use this program on a COPY of Internet
Explorer since it actually changes the program itself*

Also, THIS WILL ONLY WITH WITH THE FINAL, RELEASED VERSION OF INTERNET
EXPLORER 3.01

This may be included on the Info-Mac CD without any objection from myself.

Subject: [*] MondoMail Pro: Scriptable SMTP Emailer

Following on the heels of the FreeWare MondoMail, we've released a
"Pro", ShareWare version with several important new features.

MondoMail and MondoMail Pro are designed to simplify sending SMTP Email
messages from FileMaker Pro, AppleScript, Web CGIs, and EveryWare's
Tango. It's much easier than trying to script Eudora or Claris' Emailer
for the comparable task.

MondoMail Pro adds support for Mime encoding of message bodies and
headers, allows custom Email Headers like "X-URL:", "Organization:", or
any others you dream up. There is no limit on the number of recipients
you can specify in the To:, Bcc:, or Cc: fields (subject to SMTP server
limitations), and you can specify the message priority for each outgoing
mail message.

The package contains complete demos for FileMaker Pro, Tango, and
AppleScript, and Frontier Glue files are available.

Subject: [*] Navigator Enhancer 1.2 (internet utility)

Navigator Enhancer is an application that works with Netscape Navigator
3.x and under by adding a handy new feature. When Netscape designed its
first-generation browsers, it included a layer of directory buttons
pointing to services that varied depending on where and how you obtained
the browser. The only problem is that Netscape didn't give users a way to
edit the title and destinations of those buttons, and most of the time
the buttons remained hidden and useless. Navigator Enhancer allows you to
edit this information, so you can substitute your favorite Web pages and
services for the ones supplied by Netscape. A word of caution, though:
make sure you've exited your browser and made a backup copy of your
browser before using this application.

This version adds support for some special v2.0.2 of the Navigator.

This one is US$3 / DM 5,- shareware.

Subject: [*] ramBunctious 1.1.2

ramBunctious is a RAM disk program for the Macintosh.

RAM disks are a convenient way to achieve high performance in many
applications. Hard drive accesses are hundreds of times slower than memory
accesses. RAM disks set aside an amount of memory that the system can then
use as a "normal" hard drive, floppy drive, or any other storage device --
except that they're much faster.

ramBunctious maintains the advantages and eliminates the disadvantages of
most RAM disk programs. Several options let you customize for your desired
balance of speed, security, safety, and versatility. For example, you can
set it to write through to a file on a (real) disk for safety in the event
of a crash. You can mount as many RAM disks as you wish (or as many as you
have memory for) simultaneously. ramBunctious uses the same memory that
applications use, so the memory used for each RAM disk is instantly
available for other applications as soon as the RAM disk is put away.

ramBunctious 1.1.2 is a maintenance update. System 7.6.1 introduced a
conflict with huge FSWrite's on some configurations; ramBunctious now
implements huge FSWrite's as a series of smaller FSWrite's to avoid the
problem.

A full description of ramBunctious is available by running the
"ramBunctious manual" document included in this package, or visit the
ramBunctious home page:

RumorMill is a news (NNTP) server written by Jim Calvin, Jeremy Nelson
and Peter N Lewis. The News protocol is ideally suited to public
discussion, and RumorMill is designed to make it easy to create (and
remove) local or shared Newsgroups. RumorMill (and other NNTP) servers
can easily be linked together to create a wide spanning communication
network.

RumorMill is ideal for business groups, schools, universities and any
one else who is interested in a simple, scalable and widely supported
means of providing group discussion. RumorMill can easily mix USENET
newsgroups with local or off-site newsgroups which can be selectively
pulled or fed from multiple servers.

RumorMill can be Remotely Administered, supports Newswatcher Prefs and
Newsrc files and it has a small memory footprint. Amongst other
security features RumorMill has Site Restrictions which can be used to
prevent off-site (based on TCP/IP address) computers accessing the
server.

RumorMill requires Mac OS System 7.0 or later and is US$35 shareware.
Site and organisation-wide licenses are also available.

Subject: [*] URL Database v1.1 HyperCard stack

This stack is a simple database for storing URLs. It has some features
that make it very usable: 1) There's an Index card that displays a list
of URLs in the stack. The list can be sorted by name or date. This makes
it easy to see what's in the stack and to access any of the cards. 2)
Categories can be created by the user to organize URLs into groups. The
list view in the Index card can display all URLs or just those for for
any category. 3) A URL can be copied from the stack to the Clipboard
simply by clicking on the name in the Index list.

New features in version 1.1:
* If a URL is in the Clipboard when a new card is made, the URL is
automatically pasted into the URL field of the new card.
* The URLs can be exported to an HTML file, either for a single
category or for all URLs arranged by categories.

The stack is freeware.

* System 6.0.5 or later

Here is the new version of the 'verbs-and-nouns-lookup' application.

V&N Lookup is a simple program to search dictionaries belonging to
'Verbs & Nouns'. The search is performed on any number of databases
simultaneously. The program can be used in combination with any
text-based application because it searches for any word that you copy to

download the program 'Verbs & Nouns' which is available from the same
places as this application.

The application 'V&N Lookup' is a part of my 'Foreign Language Toolkit'

and play with them. Examples are:

Verbs & Nouns 1.62 - The program lets you create a database of verbs or
nouns in a foreign language. You can easily construct the inflection
patterns for words that are regular. You can include other information
about each word, such as a translation, grammar characteristics,
comments, etc. in a convenient form. Comments are useful for storing
examples of the use of the word, or for recording other information. You
can use different fonts and styles in the comment box. The facility for
merging databases makes it easy to share comments with other users. The
program has an exercise window. It automatically generates exercises to
allow you to practise inflection or translation. You can collect the
words that you have already learned and let the program generate
exercises just for this group of words.

Subject: [Q] AppleTalk shutoff using AppleScript?

Can AppleTalk be turned off using AppleScript?

The following script:

	tell application "Finder"
		set AppleTalk to false
	end tell

...doesn't work because the Chooser/Finder in system 7.6.1 (open transport)
apparently doesn't recognize "AppleTalk" as something to be manipulated.

My application is to make sure that AppleTalk is turned off upon bootup (by
placing the AppleScript application in the Startup Items folder) to insure
that it will not interfere with digital audio editing applications.
AppleTalk introduces clicks in recordings and I always forget to turn
AppleTalk off (after using Netscape or Fetch) between sessions.

If AppleScript can't be used for for this task, is there an elegant
alternative solution?

David,

We had a heavy-duty multi-platform QMS printer at Earlham for a while. It
had an IP address, and you could ftp a file to it for printing. ftp may be
the way Apple's 640/12 does it, too. Since you have a simple way of
setting the IP address, why not try it and see?

Good luck,

It also depends on his internet provider. We just switched providers
because our original ISP's software didn't allow the 'leave mail on the
server' option. It was a bbs-type setup that does provide POP and SMTP, but
once the mail was read on one machine, the only way you could re-read it was
to connect via Z-Term. Our present ISP has the kind of setup described,
where you can tell Eudora to leave mail on the server and retrieve it from
multiple machines.

We had this same light flashing combination on a LW II NTX. The problem, as
explained to me, was the power supply was bad. It supposedly has somthing
like 3 power outs to various parts of the LW. The part that failed for us
was the power to the fuser(the real clue was that it didn't get warm/hot).
The repair cost us about $250 parts and labor. Hope this helps. Your
mileage may vary.

Be careful! If you're using MacPGP, Super Save will save your pass-phrase

>CD) on a 7300/200. Any Clues??

This happened to me when I first got a Zip drive. As the only device on
my 8500's external bus, it worked fine, but when I had a 44MB Syquest
anywhere in the chain, it almost always froze on writes of a couple of megs
or more. This happened with various IOMEGA drivers as well with FWB HDT
(2.0.1 at the time). I had 7.5.5 at the time.

Putting an external APS Jazz with active termination at the end of the
chain once solved a SCSI voodoo problem at work. So I try it at home and
the Zip now works perfect. Turn off active termination and Zip freezes
when writing. Active termination - Zip works.

The same symptom cropped up again when I hooked a Zip to a co-workers mac
to back up his freshly updated system. But this time the problem was that
I didn't plug the SCSI cable in all the way. (a defective SCSI cable
could give the same symptom - I have verified 2 defective SCSI cables out
of the 100 or so that I have ever used)

Other suggestions - Get out the old pencil eraser and clean connections.
Swap cables. Swap equipment. Try no end termination at all. But
whatever you do - DON'T accidentally terminate a bus more than twice unless
you want to cream some of your data!
