Have you ever received a phone message and not known if it's still
"business hours" where the call came from? Or planned to call your
nephew in Harare and not known if he would be awake yet?

PhoneCodes/TimeZones is an update to my previous Area Codes/Time Zones.
It is a DocMaker stand-alone application which provides all kinds of
useful information. It lets you pinpoint where an area code or country
code is located and what time it is there. Conversely, it lets you look
up area codes for major cities in the US and Canada and international
country codes for all the countries in the world.

Version 3.3.4 is an interim release which is up-to-date on the latest
Area Code additions. Look for version 4.0 coming soon with detailed
world Daylight Savings Time information.

The reference ftp site for the latest released version is:
ftp://ftp.antigone.com/pub/pctz/

New in version 3.34 (23-Jul-1997):
- Added new Area Codes 580 678 720
- Updated info on Area Codes 450 473 660 781 784 978

A Metrowerks PowerPlant inherited class that automatically displays an
application version (e.g. in the About Box or something). All you have to
do is make sure there is a 'vers' #1 resource in your application's

(like while creating your 'PPob's in Constructor). It's pretty simple.

Subject: [*] HCmdButtonAttachment 1.1.1 - A PowerPlant Class

A Metrowerks PowerPlant inherited class that gives controls (LControls)
a command-key equivalent. This allows for more keyboard navigation. For
example, the traditional "Save before closing?" dialog asks to "Save",
"Cancel" or "Don't Save". Save is typically the default key (return)
and Cancel the cancel (escape), but there is no keyboard way to hit
Don't Save. Enter HCmdButtonAttachment.

With HCmdButtonAttachment, you can give any LControl a command-key
shortcut. You can specify the key to be the first letter/character of
the control's descriptor or it can be a character of your own arbitrary
specification. You can also have the title of the control change to
display the shortcut or not, and do so after a user-configurable amount
of time.

This archive includes the HCmdButtonAttachment sources, a custom CTYP
file for use with Constructor 2.4 or later, and an example application
to demonstrate the class.

For complete information, please read the README file enclosed in the
archive.

felt that it might be of use to other people, so I wanted to have
it publicly available to the MacOS development community.

So, what can Hsoi's App Shell do or show you how to do?

- How to use WASTE, Marco Piovanelli's WorldScript Aware
Styled Text Engine as a replacement text engine for TextEdit
- How to use the WASTE Object Handlers
- How to use Gestalt to properly check for system capabilities
- How to use UniversalProcPtr's (both usage and how to create
  your own!)
- How to have code that works on both 68k and PPC based Macintoshes
- How to read from and write to files
- How to use CustomGet/PutFile routines with your own custom
  dialog filters
- How to use Aliases and take advantage of the Alias Manager
- How to Save, Save As, and Revert files
- How to properly deal with locked files
- How to take advantage of temporary files and FSpExchangeFiles
  for safe saving techniques
- How to use nifty functions like FindFolder
- How to properly work with resources and the Resource Manager
- How to add name strings to help orphaned document files
- How to do submenus
- How to do dynamic menus (menus created at runtime, like a

This is another Startup Screen/background screen from the collection of
Jeff Miles. It is of the inside crater wall of Mount St. Helens from the
top of the crater rim. It has been sized for larger monitors but can be
reduced using any graphic application you might have. To use it as a
Startup Screen you will have to change it to that format using either
ResEdit or a graphics application that will save as "Startup Screen"
such as Graphic Converter. To use as a background screen I suggest using
an application such as "Decor" or "DeskPicture".

To see more Screens by Jeff Miles try the Start Gallery at:

http://brigadoon.com/~patter/StartGallery.com

This screen is donation ware. Climbing St. Helens is no longer free.
Like most parks and landmarks a fee is being charged for access. To help
defray costs of spending time playing around a donation is asked of $15
if you like the screen and continue to use it.

Sending payment is outlined in the web address above.

Subject: [*] Perusal 1.0b1 text file browser

Perusal 1.0b1 a large text file browser

Perusal is a text file browser. You cannot (yet) edit a file with
Perusal, just look at it. The big benefit of Perusal is that you don't
need gobs and gobs of memory to look at large files. Perusal is a
file-based editor that only reads small pieces of the file at a time.
Perusal can display tabbed text in the same way most word processors do,
or it can force the text to align in columns like a spreadsheet (this is
useful for tab-delimited files of exported information). Tabs are
user-settable. You can also copy text from the file onto the clipboard,
or save selected lines into a new file.
Perusal requires a computer running MacOS 7.0 or later with either a
68000 or higher CPU or any PowerPC.

Perusal is $10 shareware.

Perusal may be included on the Info-Mac CD.

Afraid not.

Neither of your machines support 24-bit addressing.

System 7.6 did disable 24-bit addressing even on machines which support it,
so if you had an older Mac you could downgrade to System 7.x and turn
32-bit addressing off, but with your two particular machines that's not an
option.

There is a program called Black Night, from RaineWorks software in New
Zealand that can do this, if I'm not mistaken. It is a full featured
shareware terminal type program that supports telnet. It is in the bbs (?)
area of Info-Mac. Not where you'd expect to find it. When I was using it,
it seemed stable. It also allows for the usual terminal download protocols
(x,y,z etc) in telnet.

Could someone please clue me in to what's wrong here?

By the way, I'm trying to do this on a 5200 with 24mb or RAM and running

Is it my imagination or is there really no way to get IP packets through an

Subject: Best CD-ROM cataloging software?

My company recently purchased a 28-CD clip art collection (150,000 images)
and, you guessed it, the bloody thing didn't come with an index. Three huge
books showed you every filename and thumbnail, but didn't say which CD had
the image. I printed a directory of each CD-ROM, and found that they were
roughly in order, which helped, but many folder names are very similar, so
a lot of hunting is required. I'm looking for a program that will read and
index every CD-ROM when I insert it for the first time, so I can later pull
up that index and say "I'm looking for image #ITA036_B.EPS" and it will
say, "oh, that's on CD#18, pathname
/Architecture/Foreign/Europe/Italy/Statues/ITA036_B.EPS" and better yet,
will automatically launch that file if I insert the appropriate CD-ROM.
Does such a program exist?

Besides Tex-Edit Plus, I also like BBEdit it will convert between Mac,
Unix, or DOS text {has grep and is very powerful} there is BBEdit Lite, a
=46ree version which is not crippled in anyway and if you upgrade to the ful=
l
BBEdit {which adds spell checking for example} there are various discounts.
Another program that I like is Add/Strip=81 3.4.1, it is just for batch TEXT
manipulation, this is really good if you have a lot of files that you want
to change all at once. Check the Info-Mac servers for these programs.

Dear fellow Macfolk,

In 1990, I bought a then "state of the art" RISC based Postscript clone
laser printer from Microtek (the scanner company)-the model name is
"TrueImage". Like a number of other clones surfacing at the time, it was
built around a TEC engine and a proprietary adaptation of Postscript
Level 1. It's been a reasonablly trusty little component of my
studio/office set-up, with one MAJOR gripe...Apparantly, the knock-off
of the Postscript language used to control imaging chokes on any Type 1
PS font made by Fontographer after something like Fontographer 3.0.
Something about an improvement in the way the "paths are traced" in
Fontographer...? This litlle foible is making the machine more and more
obsolete everyday (I know, so what....)

At any rate, I've heard a rumour that if I take Fontographer, open up
one of the modern "problem" fonts, and find some option or menu
selection deep inside the program that controls "path tracing"-I can
then REgenerate the font into a new "printer-friendly" version and my
printer will deal with it.

If anyone can walk me through this OR provide another fix, I would
really appreciate it.

Thanks in advance,

Now Tabs, part of Now Utilities, does what you want. It can reduce windows
to little file-folder-like tabs across the bottom of the screen.

This function is built into the Finder in MacOS 8.

Surprise! You've already got this, except that it applies to entire
applications, not just one document window. If you Option-click on the
desktop (or any other application), the active app will disappear, the
same as if you'd chosen "Hide [appname]" from the Applications menu. You
can make it visible again from that menu, just as you wanted above. If
you use a taskbar such as Malph, its icon will still be there, and
clicking on it will make the app active again, too. I use this nifty
shortcut all the time to reduce screen clutter.

I got it first bundled with ClarisWorks, then later paid for an upgrade
when ForeFront Group acquired it.
It is $25 and well worth it. It works perfectly and intuitively. I know
there are others out there. In fact, I think some of the Word Processors do
it. Let's hope someone else has details.

I was surprised to read about problems/delays with both Claris Xtend
Translators and MacLink Plus. Both work absolutely flawless for me, and
I couldn't imagine living without them.

Since my update to the 4.0.5 version of Clarisworks, when I click on
opening an outside file (either a file that was done on a PC or Apple
//gs computer), both the Xtend translators and the MacLink Plus windows
open and immediately go to work. I certainly don't have to wait for
minutes--only seconds. And these aren't all short documents either.

I did have problems in the beginning (over a year ago) when I was a new
user to the original Clarisworks 4 getting Appleworks files to translate
& open, but since upgrading to 4.0.5, I *never* have translation problems
now and everything is done "automagically."

Subject: PB180 and 7.6.1

I recently sold my PB180 to a friend, and it was a sad parting indeed.
I loved that machine....anyway....
First off, I personally would not recommend 7.6 or 7.6.1 for a PB180.
The RAM requirements for OpenTransport are quite high, and can really
cut into that 14 megs. The system can take up as much as 4 megs or
more with 7.6. Try to stick with 7.5.3 or 7.5.5. These do not have as
much overhead and actually seem to run faster. All that being said....
Did you do the proper clean install of 7.6? I have found that doing a
thorough clean install erases all problems and crashes (until i screw
around with it long enough for it to start crashing again). I don't
know if you've ever read this procedure, but here it is:
1) Get a copy of TechTool 1.1.4 (any shareware place)
2) Restart with extensions off
3) Using a Norton Utilities Emergency Disk or Disk Tools, check the HD
for problems.
4) Using TechTool, zap the PRAM (allow it to save your PRAM just in
case), and hold down the shift key while it restarts
5) Open TechTool again, and use it to rebuild the desktop
6) Install the new system software, using command-shift-k to do a Clean
Install.
7) This is important....if you're doing 7.6, install any extra updates
(Open Trans 1.1.2, etc.) BEFORE installing 7.6.1.
Install all updates without changing or turning anything off, and
restart after each install.
That should do it. 7.6.1 will eliminate all those weird errors you're
encountering if you go with 7.6. Good luck!!!!

There is also a [$10] software solution in the info-mac archives:

This control panel claims to allow the use of serial pointing devices
[Microsoft Mouse-type or Mouse Systems-type] on your Mac.

I'm planning to try it soon with a GyroPoint, and will post any results.
