Subject: [*] Disk Charmer 3.1.2; disk erase/copy/verify utility

You don't have to wait for Rhapsody to initialize disks in background...

Disk Charmer is a neat utility that lets you conveniently erase and
copy disks, and handle disk images in DiskCopy and DiskDup+ format.
If you have Mac OS 8.1, you can now use the Mac OS Extended format
(a.k.a. HFS Plus) and even set the minimum allocation block size.
Disk Charmer lets you create larger disks: you gain 8K on 800K disks,
18K on HD disks, 1.5MB on Zips.

At least System 7 is required.
Help Balloons are everywhere.
Disk Charmer has a nice, modeless interface.
It fully supports drag&drop.
It supports the handy "Undo" feature we all know and love.

Disk Charmer was recently mentioned in MacWEEK:
<http://www.zdnet.com/zdnn/content/macw/1208/287137.html>

New since version 3.1.1:

* Fixed the bug introduced with version 3.1 that prevented the
  Make disks larger option from working under certain configurations;
I actually work around a Mac OS bug
(thanks, Masatsugu Nagata and Thomas Mc Neill).

Help on Wheels 1.3

ftp://sumex-aim.stanford.edu/info-mac/app/help-on-wheels-13.hqx

This generic help server, which springs from the help facility in
the famous Disinfectant program, offers on-line,
context-sensitive help service to all AWOL Utilities programs,
and potentially others to come.

As a user, you see help for several client programs stacked in a
single window, with each program's menu commands and dialog
items keyed to descriptive paragraphs in the help file. You can
tell the help server to follow your actions in the background,
so that you can read about the program while you use it.
Hypertext links connect related sections and trigger
demonstration actions by the client application.

The Help on Wheels developer's kit (now supporting Metrowerks
CodeWarrior as well as the MPW environment, and PowerPC as well
as 68K programs) includes a sample application, and everything a
developer would need to add help service to an application,
control panel, or extension. The client interface is designed
to take the burden of display, printing, saving, and other
common help functions away from the developer. THE DEVELOPER'S
KIT IS A SEPARATE ARCHIVE, NOT PART OF THIS ARCHIVE.

This program is part of the AWOL Utilities 1.4 package,
which includes the following programs: Virtual Desktop 1.9.1,
Maybe 1.5.3, Help on Wheels 1.3 (and HoW Developer's Kit 1.3),
PictPocket 1.3.2, Menu Events 1.3.1, Menu Grabber 1.3.1, Trash Bag 1.2.2.

Mac INIT Strings 2.0.1 Updated 03/17/98

Mac INIT Strings is a freeware utility that displays a list of modem
INITialization strings categorized by manufacturer and model. All of the strings
are meant for use with a Macintosh computer. Version 2.0.1 allows you to test
INITialization strings with a modem connected to your Macintosh computer. This
version contains three times the amount of INIT Strings as the original (2.0).

Note that although this version contains options for PC Card Modems, Network
Modems and Internal Modems, these features are not yet fully implemented
and will
appear greyed out. These options will be functional in Version 2.1.

Mac INIT Strings 2.0.1 requires the use of the Apple Serial Tool 1.0.2 which is
part of the Apple Communications ToolBox (CTB). The installer will place a copy
of the Serial Tool in your Extensions Folder requiring you to restart your
machine after the installation process is complete.

Mac INIT Strings was built with Mac OS 8 and is therefore, Mac OS 8-compatible.
You will need at least System 7.1 and 4 MB of physical (installed) memory in
order to use Mac INIT Strings.

Since Mac INIT Strings is freeware, you agree to use the utility at your
own risk
by reading this document. MRD offers no technical support for this utility by
e-mail, facsimile nor telephone. If you do however, have comments on Mac INIT
Strings, please feel free to e-mail MRD at support@mrdataworks.com.

Subject: [*] SerialPort Scripting Addition 1.1

There are lots of devices from printers to uninterruptable power supplies
to home automation systems that easily plug into any serial port to
communicate with a computer. Unfortunately, all too frequently these
devices come with Windows or DOS software only. Until now, if you wanted
to communicate with these devices from the Macintosh, you were stuck
writing complicated serial port communication code in a language like C or
C++.

The SerialPort scripting addition makes it possible to send and recieve
data over the serial port from AppleScript using very easy to write
scripts. This shareware scripting addition comes with a comprehensive
manual, several sample scripts, and glue code for using it from Frontier.
The SerialPort scripting addition supports all of the communication
settings (baud rate, handshaking, etc.) and any Macintosh serial port
(including add-in cards).

This release fixes a minor bug (the input buffer size argument wasn't
always used).

Subject: [*] Snap'n Clip 1.0, 1.0

Have you ever feel like this ?
* I wish I could save the captured image into a clipping file so that I can
view it easily later.
* I wish I could see the content of the captured image easily by looking at
icons.
* I wish I can cancel the operation in the middle without creating capture file.
* I wish I could capture non-rectangle shape image easily without making
wastful space around the image.
* Shoot, the mouse has just moved a little bit when I release the mouse
button. I wish I could select the capturing area more easily.

These are the things I always feel when I am using screen capture tools.
What's the reason I develop this Snap'n Clip.

You can use Snap'n Clip in many ways. I myself uses it frequently to take a
picture memo while I am surfing the WWW. It's easy to take the WWW page
with images and text with Snap'n Clip. I only use HTML/image download
programs or off-line browsing tools that utilize the browser's cache for
capturing entire site. These tools are really useful, but it's not good for
taking only the part of the page as a memo.

Captured picture will be saved as a picture clipping file in the DeskTop with
a thumbnail icon. So you can see it later just by double-cliking them from
the Finder. No need to use graphic application program. Snap'n Clip has
many nice
features to make the screen capturing easy.

Software & Hardware Tracker II is a FileMaker Pro 3.0/4.0 relational
database which will help you collect, store and organize useful
information (such as registration codes, serial numbers, product notes,
phone/fax numbers and URLs for software authors, companies and
distributors, etc.) about all your computer products (hardware, software
and freeware/shareware). Even better, you can launch URLs directly from
inside the database, which will then call upon the Internet Config system
to open them with the proper helper applications. That means Software &
Hardware Tracker II can also be used as a powerful Internet bookmark
manager.

Software & Hardware Tracker is a CNET/Download.com and a BizProWeb "pick
of the day".

It's being distributed as shareware and costs $15 (as always, upgrades
are free for registered users). Registrations are handled by Kagi
Shareware.

New in 2.65: a few improvements and the usual bug fixes.

Subject: [*] synk-242.hqx (/disk, replacing synk-241.hqx)

Synk 2.4.2

Synk is a backup/synchronization program that can resolve aliases and
archive old files. It runs on all Macintoshes except Mac Plus, Classic and
PowerBook 100.

You can backup a folder full of aliases, making it simple to modify your
backup or synchronization strategy by dropping file or folder aliases into
the defined folder.

It is just as easy to distribute synchronized files throughout a
PowerBook's hard drive by synchronizing two folders containing aliases.

Any number of file types, creators and file endings may be skipped.

Obsolete files and folders can be archived into a folder.

Other features include:
-----------------------
- complete log of actions (now unlimited in length)
- obsolete files can be deleted, trashed or archived
- collisions are conveniently placed in a folder on the Desktop

Synk 2 is $10 US shareware. Upgrades from previous version of Synk are free
to registered users.

Version History:
----------------
2.4.2
- fixed an error message that came up the first time you ran Synk when no
preferences file was found... there should have been no message to the user
because the preferences were simply created when Synk was quit
- fixed a font problem with non-English systems (now use application font
everywhere instead of Geneva... please excuse my ignorance)
- documentation is no longer in Acrobat format but in a standalone viewer

2.4.1
- fixed a synchronization bug
- added a new "Accumulate Backup Files" button: this feature gives you the

Subject: [*] Teflon 2.2 -- menu adjustment utility for Mac OS 8

Mac OS 8 introduced a new feature called "sticky menus," where the menus
would stay down after the user clicks in the menu bar or on a pop-up menu.
This is a change from the way menus worked in previous versions of the
system software, where the menus would always go away after the user let go
of the mouse button. Teflon is a control panel which is designed to
disable or adjust this dubious "feature." Additionally, it includes an
option to have menus automatically open whenever the mouse pointer is over
the menu bar, with no clicking required.

Teflon 2.2 fixes several bugs with the "Menus automatically stick" option.

Teflon requires Mac OS 8 to function properly. It is freeware and may be
included on the Info-Mac CD-ROM.

TEO is a Thomson TO8 emulator.

TEO was originally written by Gilles F=E9tis. The Mac port was by Richard
Bannister. The documentation and the French translation was by Jacques Azou=

What is a TO8 ?

The TO8 is a french computer built by THOMSON and released in September=
 1986. It
is with the MO6 and TO9+ the result of a renewal of the range to react to th=

competition from Amstrad, Commodore and more important the 16 bits. Therefor=
e,
and though it still has the same processor, it includes many improvements=
 with a
mechanical keyboard, an extended memory, new graphic modes and improved soun=
d,
amongst many others. Benefiting from the compatibility with the TO7 and TO7/=
70,
it allows to expand its area of competences and to use professional
applications.
We can quote Multiplan (speadsheet) and Paragraphe (word processor). A new
release appeared a few later with an integrated disk drive, the TO8D, confir=
ming
the new positioning of this range. Other key factor of success, THOMSON bene=
fits
from the educational aura of its settlement in schools. As an advertisement
says,
this is the "intelligent gift" to do to your children. Meanwhile, the TO8 li=

the MO6 suffered from their confinement to the french market and as a=
 result a
software quality below their capabilities(the french editors not investing a=
 lot
to develop for a market to whom they are sure to sold, considering the compu=

with the withdrawal of the 16/32 bits project and the launching of the=
 TO16, PC
compatible qui that will compete against the current existing professional r=

(TO9 and TO9+ mainly). In the end THOMSON decided to give up the public
computers
sector signing the capital sentence for the TO8D.
