Subject: [*] A Smaller GIF 68K 1.2.2J - Japanese Version

This is the Japanese version of the A Smaller GIF 68K package.

A Japanese Windows OS version is also available from:

<http://www.bridge1.com>

A Smaller GIF is a program for reducing the size of animated GIFs
without affecting their appearance in any way. The recompressed
animations are pixel-for-pixel equivalent to the original animations if
fewer than 256 colours are used in the animation. Different GIF
utilities use different techniques to store their animations; A Smaller
GIF tries several compression techniques, and uses the technique that
will minimize the size of the resulting GIF. It is often capable of
reducing an animated GIF as most GIF programs do not maximally compress
their output. A Smaller GIF also serves as a full function animated GIF
viewer. A Smaller GIF lets you:

*view animated GIFs at normal speed, in either the normal or reverse
directions,
*examine individual frames by advancing or rewinding frame by frame,
*fast-forward and rewind quickly through animations, and
*randomly access individual frames by entering frame numbers or
positioning a slider. While viewing, the current frame is shown along
with its frame number, starting time and duration.

A Smaller GIF also provides some very basic editing of animated GIFs:
frame timing and interlacing may be adjusted. GIF comments (comments in
the animation that are not visible during viewing, but are visible using
GIF utilities) may be added, edited, or removed. Animation looping may
also be modified (GIFs may loop forever, or for a fixed number of
times).

Subject: [Q] G4 DVD drive

Greetings fellow Mac enthusiasts,

does anyone out there know if the DVD drives in the G4's sold in the
US are capable of playing DVD videos encoded for region codes other
than region code 1?

All 32 episodes of one of my all-time favorite TV shows
(Thunderbirds, a British production of the mid-60's,
http://www.thunderbirdsonline.com/) have just been re-mastered and
released on DVD. The problem is, they're being released as "region
code 2" only, which corresponds to Europe. I know some DVD drives are
capable of reading discs encoded for any region and I'm wondering if
the drives in the G4's are so capable.

Thanks in advance.

I upgraded to System 7.5+. I recall there was a way to
script that Finder with an extra piece of software, but it
was easier to switch to 7.5. I was using 7.1 because it
uses less RAM so I could run applications on the 170. Now
that the 170 is a print server, System 7.5 can use as much
of those 8 Meg as it wants.

Here's the script I use now (Application Sharing turned ON
on the PowerBook, and I type in my password each time):

tell application "Finder" of machine "PowerBook_170" to shut
down

Subject: Sherlock finds

I have recently re-initialised my HD and put in a new system due to zip
mounting problems which you might have read about in an accompanying message
(which is still unsolved). When I use the 'find' facility in Sherlock only 2
of the 3 drives that I have (one an external HD with 2 partitions) are
ticked for Sherlock to search. How can I get Sherlock to remember (default)
to having all three drives ticked. I don't see how I can do this via the
preferences. It's irritating.

Subject: Visual Effects switching Apps?

I have two different applications opened, each one showing one window
(for example, Astound and Portfolio).
I would like to be able to switch smoothly from one app to the other,
having a visual effect (such as a dissolve, etc.) that takes me from
window A in application 1 to window B in application 2.

I have tried QuicKeys, with screen dimming, switch apps, and undimming,
but it's too abrupt and apparently there is no way of controlling the
timing of this sequence of shortcuts.

Would any of you Mac gurus have a better clue? (maybe using
applescript?)

Thank you in advance for your help!

Best Regards,

Joao

Subject: zip drive problems

The zips won't mount on my zip drive. I have uninstalled and then
reinstalled the zip driver, I have rebuilt the desktop and zapped the pram.
I have tried a friend's zip drive and the problem remains. I have checked
the zip disks on other machines and they seem fine. This problem started
recently under a set-up that I have had running unchanged for quite some
time and till now been problem free. I have tried booting with only the
Iomega driver extension running so there are no extension conflicts, as I
can understand. I have e-mailed Iomega and they sent me back basic
troubleshooting steps, which I have followed but the problem still remains.
I've tried to load the Iomega guest but it says that a driver is currently
in place (as it is). I have an external drive with a system folder from
which I have booted and tried the zip drive but the same problems occur. I
have had the zip drive without other scsi connections added and it still
remains obstinate. The green light is on all the time and when I insert a
disk the yellow light flashes and the mounting noise is heard, but
repeatedly as it tries to mount the zip after each failure.
I've dried up with ideas but I don't want to be licked by this. I need the
contents of my many zips. Any help greatly appreciated.
I have a PowerComputing PowerCenter running OS9.04 with an XLR8 G3
accelerator which has been working faultlessly for a very, very long time
till recently.

Thanks,
