I run it through Disk First Aid, Disk Warrior, TechTool Pro, and Drive Setup (update disk drivers), then restart with extensions off (shift key down), then restart again and rebuild the desktop. That litany always fixes it. Remember, if you leave the machine for about 10-15 minutes, it will "fix" itself. It's probably best to allow it to do this, and THEN run utilities. However, this still doesn't address the clock-reset problem. I replaced the battery at one year even though it tested good. The new battery didn't help keep the clock on power off any better than the first one (which should last 3-5 years if the machine is always plugged in). I suspect these problems may be related to some sort of motherboard, PRAM, or CUDA switch problem, and I know we're not the only ones experiencing the problem, because several others on Info-Mac have shared similar experiences and similar lack of solutions. Let me know if reformatting fixes it, or if you have any other insights. That seems to resolve the problem for the moment.
