One would expect a flattened Photoshop 5 file to be larger than the same
file saved in Photoshop 2 format, the opposite is true. Here's an example
of a flattened image I've just finished: Photoshop 5 format, size = 358k;
Photoshop 2 format, size = 3.2 megabytes!!!!

Go to Page Setup. Change the Paper Size to the one you want.
HOLD DOWN THE OPTION KEY WHEN YOU CLICK "OK". Click "Save" when asked if
you want to save the current settings as the default settings.

I have been consolidating my work and home Macs for the summer. The
consolidated machine had MS Word 5.1 and 6.0 running together for a time.
I trashed Word 5.1. However, now when I try to open a Word 6 file I get a
message that it's creator cannot be found and then a MacLink 9.0 window
telling me that a the file is being translated _from_ Word 6 _to_ Word 5.1
format, which then opens in Word 6. Is there a default editor seting
somewhere (like in Unix) that I need to change? I have uninstalled and
reinstalled Microsoft Office, but that did not help. Changing the
translation preferences in MacLink didn't help either. I have not rebuilt
the system (it is a bigger job). Any suggestions?

If the boot floppy works, then there is hope. The boot floppy is a really
stripped down system and thus takes up less RAM. I have had mixed success
with copying the System Folder from the startup floppy to a HD. Usually it
works, sometimes it complains loudly.
Have you done a "Clean Install" of System 7.6 vice an upgrade? All sorts of
potential problems with upgrades since we all tend to add extensions and
toys which make our Macs so unique, personal, and powerful :). Couple of
approaches for accomplishing this depending on how you are installing (e.g.
CD, over the net). I like to boot from an external drive, rename the System
Folder, remove everything from the SF that is part of the previous system
including the system & finder. This should leave you with Preferences and
any add-ons. If you have sufficient disk space, just install the new system
and then slowly add preferences & extensions. Do NOT add preferences for
the finder or extensions manager or other system stuff, sometimes these
will cause problems with the new versions.
System 7.6 had an option for clean install, not sure how you activate it
anymore. Hold down the option key when selecting install? I've been on
MacOS 8 for so long I am beginning to forget some of the tricks for earlier
systems.
Thanks!

Funny thing, this just started happening to me a few days ago after months
of not doing it. It was only when I selected New from the File menu,
though. I had just installed some new templates or something, but it had
placed an alias to a file on the CD into my template folder, so every time
the template window popped up it wanted me to insert my CD. Although
you're problem's not identical, it sounds like it's probably the same thing.
In case you don't know, the really easy way to find these is to do a 'Find'
from the Finder (Apple-F), drag the Office folder onto the pop-up menu at
the top next to the text 'Find items', change the default search to 'kind
is alias' and hit Find. You can then check them all from there.
The only thing I know to do with them to stop this problem is to trash them.

Subject: Bizarre Monitor behavior
Greetings,
Something strange has occurred with my monitor and I can't figure out why
or how to fix it so I am presenting this to the collective wisdom.
I have a G3/266 with 96M RAM running System 8.1.
The monitor is an AppleVision 1710.
Since I got this machine, I have been running the monitor with the
resolution set at 1024 x 768, 75 MZ in the Monitors & Sound panel. This has
been working with no problems-up until this morning....
I went to a meeting and when I returned about an hour and a half later I
found the display had a square aspect ratio. The desktop still filled the
screen from top to bottom, but the desktop was compressed horizontally
leaving about a 1.5" black band on either side.
Here is what I have tried so far:
- Tested every other resolution setting offered from 640 x480 to 1280 x
1024. With the exception of 1024 x 768, they all fill the screen normally.
- Under Geometry in the control panel, tried the Factory Settings button.
No change.
- Rebooted. No Change.
- Zapped the PRAM. No change.
- Removed the Monitor & Sounds Preferences from the System Folder and
rebooted. No Change.
I am beginning to suspect the video circuitry but wanted to see if anyone
out there might be able to offer another possiblity.

Subject: Further Explanation Of Photoshop 5 Bug
Further discussions today with Adobe technical support revealed the
following regarding my report from yesterday, which is reproduced below. My
Photoshop ruler unit preference is set in centimetres. When I originally
drew and saved my image file the resolution default was in pixels per inch
- as a user of Photoshops 3 and 4 I have always understood the default
setting for file resolution to be in pixels per inch irrespective of one's
choice of ruler unit in preferences.
While exploring the situation with Adobe technical support we discovered
that when a new file was created with identical dimensions - in centimetres
- to the saved original, the default resolution measure automatically
changed from pixels per inch to pixels per centimetre! This obviously
accounts for the discrepancy in file size between the 2 files.
This is clearly a bug. The first file saved its resolution setting in
pixels per inch - a default setting we've come to expect from previous
versions of Photoshop irrespective of the ruler unit setting changes made
in preferences - whereas the second file changed its default resolution
setting automatically to pixels per centimetre in response to my ruler unit
preferences setting. Quirky or what!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------
YESTERDAY'S REPORT
Last night while scanning some linework into Photoshop 5, I came across the
following bug. I reported it to Adobe UK technical support this morning and
they managed to replicate the problem.
Here's an example of the problem. I opened a previously saved CMYK
Photoshop 5 file. Its pixel dimensions were 891 wide by 844 high, print
size was 7.54 cm wide by 7.15 high, resolution was 300 dpi. Next I created
a new file with exactly the same specifications but when I dragged the
first image into the new file it appeared to be incredibly small - it had
previously filled the window of the original file. I opened image size on
the new file and was surprised to find pixel dimensions of 2262 by 2145,
the size in centimetres was identical to the first file. Not surprisingly
the second file was some 3 times bigger in terms of megabytes than the
first!
As mentioned above, my first experience of the problem was moving linework
scanned directly into Photoshop into a new Photoshop file. As a control I
created a new file from scratch in Photoshop and drew something in it
without saving it. I then created an identical new file and dragged the
first drawing across to it. Absolutely no problem, the 2 files were
identical in all respects, and the image was sized identically in both file
windows.
Has anyone else encountered this bug? Adobe technical support have promised
to get back to me after further investigation of the problem.

Allan Hunter wrote about how he has learned to be satisfied with
FinderPop and so no longer cares (very much) that Alsoft didn't answer up
about whether they would make a System 8-compatible verson of PopUpFolder.
I am another person who felt that PopUpFolder was almost good
enough to skip System 8 in order to keep it. Nonetheless, I've gone along
with FinderPop. It's good, but at least on my machine, not nearly as
instantaneous as PopUpFolder, undoubtedly because of all the other
functions in the menu that are included with FinderPop.
Anyway, I just wanted to say that I just today had an email from
Alsoft, addressed to "Dear loyal PopupFolder enthusiast," explaining most
courteously and regretfully why they have not been able to get the update.
They said it sounds simple but isn't, and the original programmer of
PopUpFolder has serious health problems that keep him from working on it.
And so on and so forth. They are still trying.
As a kind of apology, they offered one of their programs for free,
called "Personal Backup". It is a demo version, but if you like it after
two weeks of use you can call them and ask for a free serial number.
They also direct you to FinderPop and to PowerMenu, and say that
they can't set a date for PopUpFolder or even guarantee completion.
Anyway, I thought it was decent of them. Its tone certainly showed
that they were aware of what a disappointment this was to the PopUpFolder
users.

This Mac has an internal 33K6 modem. Now, when I
dialup to the university network to get a TCP/IP

Other users that connect with another modem reach much higher
speeds.
Also, when I use ARA to connect to our department

The PowerMac 5500 runs OS8, and I use FreePPP (latest version).
What to do to get the maximum out of this PowerMac 5500

Irritating isn't it? Here in England, the standard size is DIN A4, and I
had the same problem.
The solution depends on which vs. of the Laserwriter driver you are
using. With the newest versions, choose PAGE SETUP, set the size and
orientation you want, then hold down the option/alt key when you click
OK. You'll get an extra dialog asking if you want to use these settings
as defaults.
Older versions of the LW driver can be patched with a utility called

Normally, hoding down the OPTION (aka "alt") key while selecting the OK

Shouldn't be a problem. The only thing is that the Plus's SCSI port does
not supply terminating power, so one of your drives in the chain must be
able to do so. Otherwise, most modern drives should work on a Plus.

I got a mail note from Micromat this weekend (It's automagic if you
register. Even the freebie TechTool. And it's worth it) saying there
was a 203r1 update to the 202 version of TechTool Pro they sent not
long ago. I got it and am happy I did."
I wish I could say my experience with Micromat has caused me "warm fuzzy
feelings". Not only did I not get the "automagic" email update, even though
I'm a registered user, I just went through a 2.5 month long very
frustrating experience with this company.
I ordered TechTool Pro 2 in mid March. At the time, the expected shipping
date was a few weeks away. Well, that got pushed back by a few weeks, not
uncommon as you all know, and is somewhat acceptable. They even made it
available (early April?) through an ftp site, but said I'd have to wait for
the CD and manual (which I needed). However, what I found unacceptable was
that Micromat couldn't even post this info on their Web site, I had to call
their sales office for updates regarding an expected shipping date and if
my order had actually gone through yet.
April came and went and I made 2 or 3 more calls to Micromat, and each time
I was told that my order would be sent that week. I never received it. Not
only that, but my email inquiries were only answered (if at all!) after at
least a few days wait.
On my second call in May, I explained the situation to someone who finally
put me through to "someone else who could help me with my order"! After
explaining the situation again, this person told me that the reason my
order hadn't gone out yet was because my credit card info had been rejected
in MARCH! Trying not to sound upset, I asked why wasn't I notified of this
all along. Don't you want my business? I was told that it "wasn't their
policy" to notify people if their cc number doesn't go through!
While I was on the phone with this person, she put the card number through
again and it worked, and she said my order was now on its way. To try to
make this short, that was 3 weeks ago. More emails sent to Micromat (to an
individual, to sales, and to general info) and all were ignored except for
one which came 5 days after my original plea for help.
In all of these communications I was polite and cordial, despite my growing
frustration. How a company can treat its customers this way and stay in
business is beyond me.
BTW, I finally received the product yesterday, June 2.
Thanks for letting me get this off my chest.

Sometimes the monitor now comes on with only green showing, though this only
lasts a minute or so. I would appreciate any suggestions on this problem.
Can the monitor be fixed or do I need to replace it?

There must be a setting somewhere to fix this problem:
I'm using Outlook Express 4.0.1, system 8.1. When the Info-Mac Digest
downloads, either as a mail message or as a news group article, only part of
the text downloads. Then, there is an enclosure which, I presume, is
supposed to contain the rest of the article. The trouble is that the
enclosure is an empty file!
I checked the Info-Mac Home page and digest information. I have subscribed
to an email of the digest with short headers. This *may* cure the problem
with the email version. I'll find out when the next issue arrives. But what
about the news articles? Does anyone know how to configure OE 401 to read
them correctly?

Subject: Possible Serious Photoshop 5 Bug? - Further Confirmation, Please.

According to the Informinit a 160 series PowerBook needs to have a file
called '131 Enabler' in the system folder to boot properly. If you did a
clean install this file may still exist in your previous system folder.

Subject: Q: Finding Sound Tracks on Enhanced CD's
It seem to be a fad now that various artiste's are making enhanced CD's.
While this has the attraction of including multimedia work for viewing
on Mac's and PC's, the downside is that the audio tracks no longer seem
to be accesible from the Finder.
With a standard audio CD placed in the CD-ROM drive one sees the disk
image on the desktop. Opening the disk reveals the audio tracks on the
CD as Track 1, Track 2, ..etc.
With an enhanced CD however, TWO CD images are mounted. From what I
understand, one is the mac HFS part and the other the ISO part which
contains shared data for the Mac/PC. Gone though, is the audio part
which list the tracks on the CD.
While this shouldn't present a problem for most people, it does pose a
problem when you need to edit sound tracks (change format, extract
information etc) or select them in various sound applications (with the
exception of Apple audio CD Player).
I would like to know if there is any way / utility / extension /
anything! available which can make the audio partition of an enhanced CD
visible in the finder, like normal audio CD's, so that I can work with
the files, i.e select them in audio editing aplications.
Any help at all would be greatly appreciated. (replies can be sent to me
directly or posted to the digest)

Subject: scsi hell
There've been a lot of postings about scsi chain woes recently, I tought
I'd add mine to the list.
The scsi chain for my Quadra 650 should be simple: internal hard drive, zip
drive, Apple CD ROM. However when zip and Cd are connected, the hard drive
does not appear. Zip and hard drive work together but hard drive plus CD
does not, indeed this combination causes the hard drive to be unreadable
when booted off a zip again - the message says the disk is unreadable and
should be initialised.
Is my problem hardware or software related ? My system software has
undergone a mutation from 7.1 to 7.5 and now 7.6, however scsi manager 4.3
(system 7.5 extension) has been lost. Also, I do not have a full system
software to do a proper reinstall. At the moment I'm running on sytem
folder 7.6 from the Norton Utilities boot disk plus various bits of system
7.5 I managed to salvage from my hardrive before I reformatted. Is my
problem related to an incompatibility of drivers between hard disk and Cd
or hard disk and system? Or is it a hardware problem ? Where ? In the scsi
bus or my hard drive ?
BTW, my cables seem ok and I've tried every combination of termination.
Any thoughts on this matter would be gratefully received

I use the wonderful utility Apollo (version 2.0). It allows you to
configure hot keys to switch between applications/finder. It also offers a

Subject: Slowwwww Network Backup
Folks, I am at a loss, and I'm hoping y'all can help.
I went to do my normal monthly Retrospect (4.0) backup of the home
ethernetlet and ran into a brick wall backing up Leslye's two HDs.
Leslye's machine (PowerTowerPro 220) yielded bodaciously slow progress
and enough "net retry" messages that I cancelled the backup. I rebult
her system (8.1) from scratch. I used Extensions Manager to turn off
everything but 8.1 Basic and the Retro Client. I swapped out the cable
between our machines (10base2, thin-net) and the dongle (AAUI-10base2)
on her machine. I eventually got her HDs backed up, but at a hellacious
cost in time that was not at all consistent with prior backups. Here are
the Retro-reported mb-per-minute rates:
04/02 05/02 06/05
Leslye HD 14.6 19.4 1.4
Leslye External 17.8 17.6 1.8
PowerBook 5300 2.6 2.5 3.2
Al HD 19.7 18.3 22.7
I'm used to the PB backup being slow. Dunno whether it is the Dayna
ethernet PCMCIA-card or the slowish 601 processor on the PB. I'm not at
all used to Leslye's 604e-based machine behaving the same way.
I've tried almost everything I know how to try. I suspect I could hook
up to Leslye's PowerTower via Localtalk cable and see if that improved
things. If so, it'd tell me that her AAUI port was dead meat. And I'm
screwed cause the PowerTower is way obsolete. Or I could maybe fork out
the bucks to change from 10base2 to 10baseT and see if that is salutary.
I hope y'all don't mind that I check with the experts before I go those
extra miles.

Here's what I did about that. I created a macro that goes like this:
Sub closeAssistant()
Assistant.Visible = False
End Sub
Then I assigned a keystroke to the macro; I think I used shift-help, but
use whatever pleases you. Presto, problem solved. The really nice part is
that the assistant vanishes without all that animated delay. m.

Ian. Choose options from the Assistant's dialog box. There you can set
preferences about when and how the help window appears.
What I'd like to know is how I can dismiss the Assistant's window without
clicking in the close box, and without enduring a video of it waving

Subject: Two-button mouse; video issues on IIci
I've recently picked up a Gyropoint wireless mouse from IxMicro, made for
both Mac and Windows systems. Obviously the second button functions like
the first on the mac platform, and I'm looking for a free- or share-ware
utility that will allow me to reassign the second button to something like
the control-click or even just a double-click.
Secondly, I'm having a problem with an old supermac thunder/24 video card
on my iici (upgraded w/ a Daystar PPC card). There is an extension that
enaables the graphics acceleration for PPC machines, and without it
running the system redraws at a doggedly slow rate. (No offense to the
canines on the list)
However, when I do enable the extension I get massive video corruption up
until the finder appears, and then I get a complete screen of scrolling
static which locks the entire system. However, when I place the monitor to
the built-in video port and set the extension to load, there are no
lockups.
Occasionally I can get it to load properly; a few times, setting the
number of colors on the card to black/white while monitor is on built in
video and then shutting down and swapping to the card worked. Sadly, the
next boot it always happens again. I've downloaded the software from
radius's site repeatedly, and am looking for opinions on what I should
test... if anyone has access to a version of the SuperPower extension
PRIOR to the version released with SuperVideo 3.1, I'd be much obliged if
I could recieve it. Otherwise any ideas? Could the video bios be damaged?
Clearing PRAM hasn't made any effect, even by using TechTool Pro to wipe
it. (It also found no other hardware problems on the system.)
Thanks.

Subject: WP menus problem
I wonder if anyone can give me some advice with this: I'm running Word
Perfect 3.5 on a Power Mac with OS 8.1 and have been for a while with no
problems. Today, in WP, when I click on any of the pull down menus (except
the Help menu) the items in that menu get drawn simultaneously on the upper
left hand side of the screen, each item lettered alphabetically (they begin
around the apple menu and go down the left hand border of the monitor).
They'll draw over anything, including the desktop or any open document, and
stay there until the system draws something over them. Pulling down another
menu just draws the items from that menu over the ones already there. Other
than that, the program itself seems to function as usual, though this
problem renders it pretty useless in practice. I tried reinstalling the
program to no avail.
Any help appreciated.
