Read-only volumes (e.g. servers, CD's) are skipped, and the startup disk is checked last, so there's less chance it will be busy if you run Autocheck at startup. Stops if Disk First Aid finds an error, unless the error is a busy disk. Autocheck tries three times to check a busy disk; then just reports it as busy. I wrote this since there's a dwindling number of automatic disk checkers any more, and Disk First Aid has become, in version 8.2, a fine program. I put Autocheck in my Startup Items folder; it runs while I'm getting coffee, and both the Mac and I start the day right. Free. May be included on Info-Mac, AMUG and UMich CD's. First and foremost, NewsTicker is a PowerPC only application. If the need truly arises, I might consider making a 68K version too. NewsTicker is a utility for displaying the headlines from different web sites. It puts up a floating windoid where the headlines scroll by. Double-clicking a headline will open your browser to show the full story. It can also track web pages, showing when they have changed. NewsTicker uses a built-in parsing engine, which describes the format of web pages, and "teaches" NewsTicker which parts of the incoming HTML page are the headlines. Since the format of web pages may change, NewsTicker sometimes displays more information than you might want (or even less than what you expect), but it's still much better than having to launch your browser every time you want the news headlines... Using NewsTicker? Basically, launch it, and turn on the Balloon Help for any un-clear option. Email me with your questions or suggestions. Please note that holding down the Control key while clicking in the NewsTicker window provides access to the NewsTicker window Contextual Menu. Requirements * Mac OS 7.5.1 or better. * Open Transport 1.1 or better. * InternetConfig 1.2 or better (works better with Internet Config 2.0) Required if your network is behind a firewall/proxy server. In such a case, configure Internet Config properly, and NewsTicker will do the rest. Shareware Use NewsTicker for no longer than 14 days, then please register it or trash it. If you use register NewsTicker and email me with "I Use NewsTicker" in the subject of the email, I'll inform you of new versions of NewsTicker. Please email me bugs, compatability problems or suggestions. Registering NewsTicker entitles you to receive new versions, up to and including the next full version. Mac OS 7.5 and better, I believe). Hi InfoMac Readers, I have just replaced my venerable 6115CD with my son's 6400/180. We bought him a G3 300 mhz desktop for college graduation. Well, I knew I wouldn't get a machine that was literally 3 times faster since the clock speed of the CPU is nowhere near the whole story, but I'm really disappointed in how sluggish it seems. My son had told me that he thought the disk was *really* slow in his machine, and my senses told me the same thing. Booting the system was downright agonizing, and this statement is coming from someone who was living with a 6100/60. I'm running 7.6.1 (OT 1.2) with 40mb of RAM, and a pretty conservative set of extensions, Other Menu (no Apple Menu Options), ApplWindows, and KeyQuencer are my major departures from a plain vanilla Apple System. This machine is essentially used for my wife's consulting business. I've finally got enough CPU horsepower to run MS Word 98 and MS Excel 98. We use Netscape Navigator 4.04.1, Eudora Lite, and Compuserve. I probably have covered what we use 90% of the time. As you can see, this machine is not being used for gaming or other graphics intensive work. I ran a test of my 6100 and the 6400 using Norton System Info (3.5.1). No extensions were enabled for the Norton System Info testing, and I followed Norton's recommendations to shut off virtual memory and set the disk cache back to 128kb. The surprise was that my 6100 Disk was running at 1.8 times the 6100 base line. I had forgotten that I had upgraded the original 350 mb disk to a 1 gb disk (5400 rpm 10.5ms access, not exactly a speed demon, but better than stock). The 6400 IDE drive was running at 1.38 times the 6100 base line. This, I said to myself, sounded like a problem. So, I took the 1gb 6100 SCSI disk out of the 6100, put it in an external case, updated the system for the 6400, and ran everything off it on the 6400. I even dismounted the IDE drive after booting. The Norton numbers for disk performance went up to 1.69 times the 6100 base, and the overall System Number went up from its original 1.55 to 1.71 times the 6100 base. These are not impressive numbers, but 23% improvement in disk performance translated to roughly 10% overall System improvement. Given that a medium performance (at best) SCSI disk showed a marked improvement over the IDE that came with the machine, what recommendations can you offer me, short of buying myself another G3. Is the stock IDE drive just a real dog? Would replacing it with a high(er) performance IDE drive be wonderful? Is the IDE controller the real problem? That would mean I should simply go SCSI and leave the IDE drive as spare storage. I'm sort of heading in this direction as you can see. Throwing out disk storage seems foolish. This 6400/180 has a spare bay I can put a SCSI drive into. Will I gain anything from having yet a faster SCSI drive than the 1gb one I took out of the 6100? I bet this SCSI bus is only 5 mbyte/sec, right? I have one PCI slot left, the other has an ethernet card. I suppose I could put a fast wide SCSI card in it and get yet a better disk. This is probably overkill, and at some point, the disk speed will stop being the performance bottleneck and something else will be the problem. Anyway, I guess I would say that I'm more or less satisfied with the feel of the machine with the external SCSI disk. It is significantly less sluggish. So I am looking now to just come up with the clean repackaging, but I certainly wouldn't complain if I could get another 20% or so improvement. Oh yes, I fully intend to cut over to System 8. I just couldn't stand its performance on my 6100, but I expect it will be fine on the 6400. Thanks in advance for any suggestions. I need to develope a solution for a client that uses Windoz 95/98 both in single station and in networked settings. This database will have 17+ data fields. The size of this d-base will likely exceed 1000+ records in a very short period of time...that will equal 17,000+ fields. I will need to be able to sort, catagorize and creat many different relational reports. I have been looking for the "right" d-base for this job. I have been placing most of my attention on evaluting FMP 3/4 because of the environment I like to work in (Mac). I have also been "seduced" by the "ease" at which you can quickly develope solutions WITHOUT HAVING TO LEARN PROGRAMING LANGUAGES!... The biggest delema is the SPEED issue. I've collected many FMP demos from other companies that resemble what I am wanting to create. Generally, the file containing one of these solutions contains usually over 8 modules that have to "Load" one at a time before you can start inputing data...this loading process sometimes takes over a minute (on a PowerMacG3266Mhz 128MB Ram 9gigHD). I also have collected several similar demos developed using Corel Paradox and the wait time is maybe 3 seconds at best..(on a Pentium 200Mhz 36mb ram 4gigHD) In Corel you have to use the programming language called "ObjectPAL"...and you should be familar with the workings of Windoz 95/98...a major DRAG! But the damn thing seems really a faster solution... What I am reading regarding the speed issue...tells me that FMP developers rarely consider the "End User"...the person or persons that have to start up the machine and input the data...in playing around for several months with demos from many companies and using both platforms...FMP is usually "Dog slow"...I have to wait several seconds for screen redraw...using the Paradox demos the speed is lightening fast...HIT ENTER AND BOOOOM...To the next window or record...THATS WHAT MY END USERS WANT! SUPER FAST DATA ENTRY! I WANT TO USE FILEMAKER PRO!!!!! So far my reseach is confirming my suspition that FMP is not going to make my client happy! Oh sure...I've read the posts about "fast developement" vs "learning curves/ crappy interface"... But the issue here is not quickly turning around a solution...but how will the client "interface" with the solution ...immediately, in a month, several years down the road as the size of his d-base increases...will the client be screaming "whats causing this slow down!?". Please help me! Tell me a d-base app exists with the pleasent attributes of FMP and the speed of some these "compiled" d-base solutions... Thanks in advance. Apple has given us a really cool way to put your Mac on the web with Personal Web Sharing. This resides as a simple control panel all you have to do is turn it on. Isn't it about time someone turned this inside out and made a simple control panel which puts FTP protocol into the finder? If you have AppleShare in your chooser you can connect to AppleShared drives, why not a chooser extension to connect to FTP servers? My internal and external hard drive icons have been replaced by a gray generic looking page icon (the one with the folded corner). First it happened to one drive, and then the other about 2 weeks later. When I go to the "get info" window for each drive, I can copy the generic looking icon and paste it somewhere else. When I attempt to cut the generic looking icon or attempt to paste a different icon on to the folder, I get the following message: "The command could not be completed because it cannot be found." Problem seems to be with FileSaver, but more tests needs to be done. After rebuilding the desktop using this feature in Norton, major problems are occuring, like lost of some partitions and even difficulty in booting. Problem was solved by destroying all the invisibles files created by FileSaver, using Disktop to do that and removing FileSaver altogether. However, Norton is able to find problems like missing icons and so on. I will not try SpeedDisk for obvious reasons. This all consumes time and introduces delays. I've also noted that 'reloading' the page will reconnect on the same URL, and after several reconnects, things settle down. most propable cause; BAD PHONE LINE or telco routing thru a substandard switch. On enquiring, I was told that for the Mac only Netscape 403 or 405 or maybe 406 would cope with the necessary 128bit encryption, the Microsoft software did something non-standard and wasn't supported by the 'industry standard' gateway. I guess M$ assume that anything they do is automatically 'standard'. Of course when I attempted to retrieve 406/128bit I was told to piss off unless I was a US citizen. However, when I queried this with the bank, the Help Line girl (obviously reading from a goof sheet) said "Don't worry, just use the 40bit software and our server with insert it's own 128bit encryption." It was reading and writing very slowly despite the fact that the drive head was moving like crazy. It gave the impression of being fast, but was very slow indeed. Writing the File Saver with File Saver took forever and the shut down process was like I was on Windows. So, I booted with the Silverlining Diskette and updated the driver again and then picked the menu DRIVE to pick the SCCI and used the option SET SCSI ID TO SWITCHES. This way the drive is accessed directly by using the Switches behind the drive. Before, it was using a software access. This feature is useful if you have a drive whose SCSI number cannot be modified manually, but using DIP switch or another manual way is much better. So, check the DRIVE menu to find all those options just mentioned. But, don't forget to use a diskette to boot and not do it from the SCSI chain.
