Subject: [*] AliasCrony 2.1.1; Alias management.
AliasCrony is the ultimate alias manager. It has several features:
- Since aliases of applications lose the capability to have files dropped
on, when the original is on a different volume, AliasCrony can create
SuperAlias, a new alias kind, having drag capability always active.
- It can create aliases or SuperAliases and put them into specific
predefined folders, when you're using the Drag&Drop mode. From its menus,
instead, you can select the destination folders by using a speedy way.
- It can update aliases (also as SuperAliases) on the fly or else through
its menus.
- It can add, to aliases, some useful custom icon, freeing a bit of space
on desktop (as before: you can add the custom icon on the fly or else by
using the proper menu).
-You may configure any action of above through preferences and change them
with one keystroke before creating aliases or SuperAliases .
- It can scan all on-line volumes to create lists of:
a) attached aliases,
b) unattached aliases,
c) aliases and originals on different volumes.
-It can scan also individual folders-disks.
The created lists return useful infos about the aliases found, moreover,
from these lists, AliasCrony can do several actions:
a) retrieves and shows aliases and originals.
b) links/updates/deletes/moves aliases.
c) shows the Finder's Info window, about aliases and originals.
d) updates aliases of applications to SuperAliases.
e) trashs the whole aliases list.
AliasCrony is Internet Config aware, Appearance Savvy and requires at least
System Seven to run.

New since version 2.1.0
Removed a bug causing, sometimes on 68K, the unexpected closing of
AliasCrony. Replaced, on 68k code, SpinCursor with WatchCursor to avoid
trouble with the most recent development libraries for 68k, who support
badly this feature. Better support of Appearance Manager in ModalDialog
filters. New trial time term. Adresses update. Minor changes.

Subject: [*] BootClock submission via ftp
What is BootClock?
BootClock is the simplest reboot utility available. It doesn't interfere
with Web servers; it doesn't require scripting; and it takes next to no CPU
cycles. What more could you ask for? BootClock supports unlimited reboot
schedules and multiple preference files. Plus weekly, daily, and even
hourly reboots for the truly unstable server.
Requires Mac OS System 7.5 or later, 500k free disk space, 500k free RAM
(1MB recommended). Compatible with WebStar and any other server we've been
able to get ahold of.

This program is a version of the I Ching. For centuries the I Ching has

Fergus:
You don't have to partition. Install both systems, create a folder called
"Finder (disabled)" in each System folder, and drag one Finder into one of
them. That un-blesses the System so that it won't be recognized as bootable
and your Mac will boot from the other system. When you want to switch, just
disable the other Finder, drag the other one out of its' "Finder
(disabled)" folder one level up to the System folder and close that system.
At next boot, the Mac will use the system that's now valid (been blessed).
The only catch here is that you can't do this on the fly. You have to know
what you want it to boot under the next time you start it.

Eudora Lite also used to have TOC (table of contents) files that you'd have
to move too. The newer version doesn't neccessarily use them. Perhaps
Eudora Pro is the same.
"NetChronometer 1.1.1" should look after synching your time. Remember that
they'll drift apart again. It's only a quartz crystal, after all.

Subject: (Q) control strip modules for specific functions
Dear Digest reader,
Anybody made a control strip module out there that lists the open windows of
all applications and allows you to switch between them? That would be a
handy thing to have. I for one don't like the hierarchical menu structure
of Window Monkey, and having to window shade my windows to get to windows in
the background, or trying to remember a key combination. Other people may
not mind, but I am sure there is a desire to use the control strip for as
many things that are possible is out there, especially since it itself is a
floating window above everything else, and compact enough it doesn't
interfere with one's work.
Thank you.

Subject: 7600 Restart problem
Greetings!
I just inherited a 7600/132 with 32MB RAM. When I got it I initialized the
hard drive, updated the drivers and installed 8.1. When restart it, either
from the menu or the pop-up that appears when you push the power key, it
will not come back up. More specifically, the screen goes black, the
startup chimes sound, and the grey screen with the cursor in the upper-left
come up but that is the end of it. There is no hard drive activity and the
cursor remains stuck in the corner when the mouse is moved; no happy mac,
no sad mac. The same thing seems to happen when the startup disk is set to
the CDROM except that I have a second or two before the mouse freezes.
I have tried zapping the PRAM but since this is an entirely new install, I
can't think of anything else to try.
Has anyone see or heard of this kind of thing before? Have I got a serious
hardware problems? Any thoughts or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

My first recordings with PV were OK but recently the application has been

I've tried different positioning for the PlainTalk Microphone and have not

Subject: Followup: Older Graphic Converter
I asked just a little while back for any copies of Graphic Converter
because the latest one(s) no longer supported the ability to copy to the
clipboard the file list which Graphic Converter is capable of creating from
any folder; the file list shows dimensions (length and width) in pixels,
file name, file size on disk, file size decompressed (for JPEGs and other
compression algorithms), and so on, and I had been using GraphicConverter
in conjunction with FileMaker to automatically generate thumbnails and
descriptive parameters of my graphics files.
Well...since that posting, I quickly received 3 copies of Graphic Converter
old enough to still have this capability enabled, a half dozen additional
offers of same (the Info-Mac community is phenomenal!), AND an initial
letter from Thorsten Lemke, the author of GraphicConverter indicating that
he had found the problem, and, not long after that, a notice from Lemke
that a new beta was available.
Thorsten Lemke's new beta version not only restores the ability to copy the
file list to clipboard, it also adds the new ability to save the list to
disk as text for even easier import into Filemaker. My scripts work better
than ever, and GraphicConverter continues to improve.
More to the point, here's a programmer who took time to add in a feature
and restore the functionality of another because one end user had a need
for that.
It's a great application. I enjoy image editing enough to have 136 MB
stuffed into my old 7100, an aging but still adequate UMAX flatbed heading
up the SCSI chain, 3 monitors to hold 2 images plus a monitor's worth of
palettes, and Adobe's Greatest Hits standing by to do scratch-disk
maneuvers on a Seagate 2.1, and yet there are files that Photoshop doesn't
interpolate well, and times when I just wanna see the image and don't want
to wait for Photoshop to launch and watch it count its fingers and toes,
and sometimes I want to see a slide show of my files. Graphic Converter
will open damn near anything that contains graphic information. It will
open damaged files with missing or garbled information and display as much
of the remains as can be displayed instead of simply turning up its nose at
them. And, in keeping with its name, it converts formats dependably,
better than Photoshop in many instances (for example, try converting an
8-bit PICT screen shot to 24-bit JPEG format without obtaining dithering
artifacts in Photoshop. You can, but it is a multi-step process. In
Graphic Converter, it is as simple as Save As).
I would like to offer a resounding salute to Lemke and the Mac shareware
author's community in general. You folks make the platform hum. Nearly
half of my favorite software, the stuff I rely on, is freeware or
shareware, and although at any given time only about 3/5 of my shareware
has been paid for, and only 1/3 of what has been paid for was paid for on
time, I am ever so grateful for its existence. I will try to improve my
payment ratios! Please keep on doing what you do.

Subject: Power Mac G3 All-in-One won't sleep
Hi,
I have as stated above a Power Mac G3 All-in-One which is energy saving
compliant. The disk drive will sleep, but not the monitor. One would expect
just the opposite, when something is accessing the drive constantly. I am
not on any network, not plugged to the internet on a continuous basis, nor
plugged to a printer or a modem or anything, no zip drive internal or
external, no ram disk, no virtual memory, etc.
If I load with the CD or a diskette or with only 8.1 extensions as defined
in Conflict Catcher all is OK, both the drive and the monitor will sleep at
the defined time.
However, if I load the normal extensions for this machines which is an AV
with lots of plugs for video and sound and so on, then the drive will
sleep, but not the monitor.

Hi,
This message was posted in the Information Alley messages, but the link to
Apple's site do not work! I tried a search at the Apple site but nothing
found.
I had the same problem and seemed to have solve it by removing the
Silverlining 2.2.1 Control Panel. I had an external hard disk from La Cie
on the same SCCI chain as the ZIP plus external disk.
It is like the two drivers were in conflict in System 8.1 used on the
All-in-one.
However, on my other machine with System 7.5.5 on a 68030 all is OK.

I have a Power Macintosh G3 All-in-one computer. It does not have an

John:
DataViz from Trumball, CT makes a couple of good translation products
called "MacLink Plus Translators Pro" and "MacLink Plus PC Connect" - they
can certainly translate MS Works files along with a couple dozen others.
The PC Connect version even comes with a null modem cable and DOS software
so can connect a Mac and PC together and transfer/translate files directly.
They're around $CDN140.00 and $CDN190.00 respectively.
BTW, If they really are "text" files, then any of the programs you
mentioned will work just fine. I suspect that they weren't saved as text.
