At least in Singapore, the HP 880 and 895 now ship with the new Mac driver on CD-ROM. This is the one written by Infowave, who also produced PowerPrint. The driver looks nice: 2-up printing is now supported at last. I haven't played with it enough to know whether it will hit the "out of memory" bug that plagued earlier HP drivers. Powerprint was able to print documents that crashed earlier HP drivers though, so hopefully Infowave has done as good a job on this driver as with their own products. Print quality from the 895 should be acceptable. Whether or not it is better or worse than the alternatives depends on a lot of factors. Incidentally, the new driver supports both Appletalk and USB, so I'd recommend it to all 800-series deskjet owners: http://www.hp.com/cposupport/cons_swindexes/hpdeskjet89309_swen.html Shih Tung ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 22 May 1999 11:12:09 -0400 From: a brody Subject: (A) Powerbook modem troubles? Floyd" Subject: (C) Norton and MacOS 8.1, 8.5, 8.5.1, 8.6 do not mix I've been using NUM for a long time (since the 7.x days) and have never had a single problem with it. There was a time when it was incompatible with HFS+ and consequently you'd have nightmares if you used it at that point. However, if I recall they came out with a patch to at least make it not possible to use on an HFS+ disk, and also came out with a utility to repair an HFS+ drive that had been damaged in this manner fairly quickly. Admittedly, I was rather irritated at how long it took them to come out with a version that worked on HFS+ drives but once they did I never had a problem. I've been using v4.0 (*not* 4.0.3) with 8.5.1 and now 8.6 for a while on an HFS+ formatted disk with no problems. I've no idea why some people have problems with it but it's certainly not wholesale disaster. Also, you *do* in fact have to format your drive to change it from HFS to HFS+, the 8.1 update does not do it automatically. I exhibited all these symptoms >after checking my disk with Norton Disk Doctor 3.2.1 (which was the only >version I was aware of available at the time). At the introduction of OS 8.1, the most current version of Norton Utilities was 3.5.2. According to Symantec, this was compatible with HFS+. I have never tried using any NUM 3.x on any HFS+ disks. However, an Apple programmer quietly released a small (18k iirc) utility that would fix directory damage done to HFS+ disks by Norton 3.x. >Net result, a Mac >technician 60 miles away from my home could not recover the data on the >drive, and had to reformat it. Symantec made public knowledge that any disk lost to directory damage by 3.x could be and would be recovered by them at no cost other than the time to remove the disk from the computer and send it in. They even covered shipping. This was liberally stated at their (then) support site, on Usenet. Several people took advantage of this offer. > Luckily I had made a backup one month >before, but still one month of data was lost. The 8.1 upgrade available >from Apple's website doesn't even ask you whether or not you want HFS+. The 8.1 upgrade by itself cannot change formatting from HFS to HFS+. This must be done by reformatting and reinitialization with Drive Setup or, better, with Alsoft PlusMaker and PlusMaximizer. By the way, Alsoft's DiskWarrior is an alternative to NUM, and one that most sites recommend >I can only assume that it put it on because the documentation on Symmantec's >website later on said it had trouble with HFS+ systems. But if that were >the case, then why didn't I have to reformat my hard disk upon upgrading to >MacOS 8.1? OS 8.1 does not require reformatting to HFS+ in order to run. I recommend either TechTool Pro or the above-mentioned Alsoft DiskWarrior. >By the way, probably the only reason why Norton still makes software for >the Mac is because they are the only company to make a reliable virus >detection utility now with free updates. If you check the MacManager archive you'll find that many people have problems with NAV. Virex did not give a free upgrade from 5.8.1 to 5.9.x, and 5.8.1 is broken under 8.1 or higher. Virex 5.9 has control panel incompatibilities with Mac OS 8 or higher, for many of the same reasons. Virex offered a free upgrade from 5.9 to 5.9.1, and have been emailing free monthly updates to the virus definition files since last year, when 5.9.1 became current. It has no identified problems with any MacOS 8 version, but I still disable the control panel on some workstations. >Virex stopped offering free >updates after Virex 5.8.1. Nope. See above. > I'll say this much, if it weren't for Norton >Anti-Virus I would be the first person at the Better Busieness Bureau >complaining that Symantec hasn't been shut down for making bad software. I tend to agree that Symantec has been one of the least responsible Macintosh software publishers, but there are good alternatives and the best way to show your unhappiness with them is to vote with your feet and your wallet. I find that my "toolbox" includes Apple's Disk First Aid, Alsoft's TechTool Pro, Alsoft's DiskWarrior and Norton Utilities 4.0.3. All seem to find things the others don't, and all provide benefit. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 21 May 1999 11:11:51 -0700 From: Paul Brians Subject: (Q) Hierarchical menu utility that doesn't slow down System 8.6 I love having access to hierarchical menus, but Vincent Tan's Control Strip Menu Items, for a long time my mainstay, broke a System version or two ago. Despite the fact that java is still much slower than c/c++, its advantages on the arenas of security, code robustness, platform independence, and internet-readiness are evident. It seems to me that sooner or later java will be the language of choice for most programming efforts. So why is Apple so behind everyone else in supporting it? Isn't it reasonable to conclude that in showing such poor support for java, Apple is steadily alienating developers away from the Mac? I, for one, have been a long-time supporter of the Mac, but now find myself in the awkward position of having to use a PC to develop all my java programs simply because Apple hasn't kept up with everyone else. Since java programming now takes a significant fraction of the time I spent in front of a computer, I'm beginning to have second thoughts about making a Mac my next computer. I doubt I'm the only person in this position. I'm sure some of the readers will complain that this subject is better suited for a more specific discussion list. However, the java-mac list is pretty much dead (at least the last time I checked) and the other java lists rarely talk about the Mac. I rest my case.
