Application Menu Extension
by Matthew Xavier Mora

mxmora@best.com
This extension allows you to access the Application Menu from the left side
of the menu bar. There are other extension that do something similar but
they had compatibility problems in the past. This extension is very simple
and only uses a jGNE filter routine to hook into the system. No traps are
patched in the installation of this extension. I've been using this
extension on various machines and every recent system release ( in various
release stages) and it has not had a problem with any of them. I haven't
tested it on systems older than 7.5, but it should work. Let me now if it
doesn't.
Shareware
This extension is $10.00 shareware. Once installed and you get used to it,
you will wonder how you got along with out it. :-) You can register the
software with the register program included in this archive.

From: Jeff@GroundZeroSW.com
Subject: [*] bedlam-2-102
Ground Zero Software, Inc. releases Bedlam 2 version 1.0.2
Mankind has been virtually wiped out by an extraterrestrial armada!
This shoot'em up game play puts you in the seat of the XJ-777,
code-named "Annihilator". Only you can help save the solar system from
ruthless alien domination. Bedlam 2 is a fast action, arcade-style game
with forty-five levels of blistering game play. As you blast away at
the invading forces, your ship moves along the bottom of the screen
trying to avoid a barrage of enemy firepower, collisions with attacking
ships and the occasional chunk of floating space debris. By racking up
points along the way, you earn much-needed extra ships, and can even
capture hunks of gold bars released when you've demolished the ships of
some of the greedy trespassers. Other fun and nasty surprises
materialize during your long mission to free our galaxy from this evil
infestation.
Bedlam 2 contains over 10 music tracks utilizing QuickTime
technology, tons of "stereo" sound effects, and several full 256 color
3D rendered images. The many exciting and nerve-wracking features are
sure to challenge your senses and give your mouse finger a workout.
The following is a list of additions found in Bedlam 2 1.0.2:
The bug fixes include:
- A sound bug that would cause Bedlam to crash if Bedlam's sound
volume was set to 0.
- A music bug that could cause Bedlam to crash in certain instances
if Bedlam's music volume was set to 0.
- A few scoring bugs were fixed including one which wouldn't add points
for destroying some alien weapons and one which awarded the 'Speed
Kill' bonus if it took several minutes to complete a level.
Other improvements/tweakings include:
- Added slightly more error checking.
- The game is somewhat easier since:
- the multiplier appears more frequently.
- there are not as many moving aliens at one time.
- there are not as many firing aliens at one time.
- the ship's shield is more powerful. It now destroys most
everything.
- Asteroids will no longer appear right beneath the ship, resulting in
'instant death'.
- The multiplier adds extra ships too if the multiplier is 'active' and
the secret extra ship is collected.
- Shooting the alien ship special weapon 'canister' as well as the
falling
teleporter will now also destroy the ship's shot.
- Explosions now move for added realism. Cool.

Announcing the release of Kineticon 1.0.1!
Bring your Mac's motionless icons to life!
Kineticon is a system extension which replaces normal, static icons on your
Macintosh's desktop and in its windows with chosen animated icons.
Kineticon is fully configurable, allowing you to choose which icons should
animate simply by enabling them within Kineticon's editor.
Kineticon Editor (included in the Kineticon package) allows you to create
custom animations which can be made to appear in place of any icon
displayed by your Macintosh.
With Kineticon you will have THE COOLEST hard drive icon on your block!
With Kineticon you will have THE CUTEST trash can icon in your neighborhood!
And remember, if you don't like the included animations, you can easily
make your own!
Some of the changes in version 1.0.1 from version 1.0:
* Seemingly random crashing bugs fixed.
* Shareware reminder message is now much less annoying.
* Upgrade fee policy has changed. Registered users will never have to pay
an upgrade fee for future versions of Kineticon (minor OR major upgrades).
System requirements:
* Any Macintosh with at least a 68020 processor (both 68K and PowerPC Macs
are supported).
* System 7.1 or higher (may work on earlier systems above 7.0 - only tested
with systems 7.5 through 8.1).
* Color (doesn't work in grayscale or black and white, sorry).
* Free RAM: at least 300K. More RAM is needed depending on how many
animating icons are enabled.
* 2 MB of hard drive space (for the extension, editor and animating icon
files).
* Faster Macs (such as PowerMacs) are recommended.
Cost:
* All this for only $10 US! (Kineticon is shareware)

This is a beta version of Controller. Not everything works yet, but the
program is stable, so far, on my MacII with Apple Midi Manager and a
MacWaveMaker. Warning, Settings and Programs files must be present in the
home directory of Controller, so don't remove Controller from it's directory.
Make an alias.
Controller simply sends control change events to MidiShare. If you have a
synth that is not up to the general standard, this may be useful for online
collaboration, and who knows what else. If there is enough demand, I will add
an inline filter to Controller, giving the user absolute control over midi
stream parameters. In the future, I will also standardize the file system
routines.

Open in Browser AppleScript can be used from any location on your computer,
It opens html files from a folder of your choice in your browser. One html
file per
browser window. Great for when you have to print out a web site from the
browser or you
want to quickly skim through all your pages.
Requires: Netscape Navigator or Internet Explorer, AppleScript, MacOS
Version 1.1 fixes a bug in sub-folder searching. Also makes navigator
windows at 640 by 480 instead of default.
How To Use:
1. Run the script (double click on it). Script may ask you where your
browser is.
2. Script asks for a folder where your .htm or .html files are located
3. Script asks if it should search sub-folders within folder selected in step 2
4. Script proceeds to open each page in its own navigator window
5. Once finished, the script alerts the user with a dailog. This script
does not modify in anyway the files or their file names.

Subject: [*] Verbs & Nouns 1.8.8 - foreign language learning
Here is the new version of the 'Verbs & Nouns' application - 1.8.8
'Verbs & Nouns' is an application for practising inflection, translation
and pronunciation at the level of single words. Features include the
opportunity to do inflection exercises, and translation exercises in
both directions; to record and play sound for single words; and to do
exercises based on sound. The program keeps a record of exercises, and
identifies the words that the student has difficulty with. Along with
the program, you need a module for the target language concerned. The
program can also be used as an authoring tool to write your own modules
of inflected words for any language. A built-in 'inflection-generator'
simplifies the addition of these words. A 'Find' feature allows the
modules to be used as bilingual dictionaries.
Ready-made modules are already available for certain languages. You can

My Original Question:
Can anyone suggest a way to automatically convert a hard drive full of

Thanks to the many folks who suggested MacLink Plus, which comes with
System 7.6.1. You can also buy a version. A list of Mac to Mac conversions
that the commercial version can do can be found at:

Subject: [A] External PCMCIA reader for DOS format cards?
Original Problem: Accessing a DOS formatted PCMCIA card (disk) in an
external PCMCIA reader on a PowerMac 9600 in order to transfer images from
a digital camera to PhotoShop.
Thanks to several readers who suggested using system components from a
PowerBook or the more advanved features of the newest PC Exchange control
panel. However, these will only handle the internal PCMCI slot on a
PowerBook, not an external SCSI-based PCMCIA reader.
Solution found by local Apple dealer: FormatterFive 3.0 from Software
Architects actually does the trick. It installs a control panel that looks
like DOS Mounter 95 but has the added capability of mounting DOS formatted
disks of any kind. I cannot format PCMCIA cards in DOS format with this
tool (the camera will do that for me) but otherwise it does exactly what I
need: It mounts the PCMCIA card, makes the files accessible to PhotoShop
and allows me to trash them after use.

You could certainly make a MacLink translator to make files Word 6 format,
then drop the files onto the translator icon. You may need to buy MacLink
Pro to do it. I don't know if it works with whatever bundled versions may
be around. Perhaps someone else knows. But I know for sure that one of
MacLink Pro's little translators would batch process them just great. (I
would probably do it 25 at a time or something like that, not dropping all
2000 on it at once!)

I'm copying this to the list, too. Since installing System 8, I have had
this same manifestation, now and then. It is sometimes solved by just
restarting. It is always solved by the full routine, consisting of throwing
away the Finder preferences, using File Buddy (or other utility) to make
the Desktop file and database visible then trashing them, then restarting
the computer and letting it rebuild its desktop.
If you have done all that, then I suppose running Norton Disk Doctor
couldn't hurt.

Subject: Drive won't mount at startup
I have a problem when trying to use an older model Ehman 175 Meg
external hard drive with a Centris 660AV. The internal drive in the
660AV died and I would like to replace it with this Ehman, which has
been in daily use since forever on an even older IICX.
The problem is that the drive now refuses to mount at startup. Using
HDT Primer ver. 1.7.7 (part of Hard Disk Tookkit), the drive is found
immediately and mounted with no problem. From then on, the drive works
normally until the next startup.
Using Hard Disk Toolkit again, I've tried updating the driver and
running extensive (over 2 hour) tests on the drive. This produced no
read or write errors and no bad sectors were found.
Trying to eliminate SCSI chain length or faulty cables as a source of
the problem, I removed the Ehman drive from its case and installed it
internally in the 660AV. The SCSI terminating resistors (20-pin DIP)
were installed in the drive controller board, and the SCSI address was
set to SCSI 0.
Booted from an external System 7.6.0 CD-ROM and installed System 7.6.0
onto the Ehman. Tried to restart with nothing connected to the rear
panel SCSI connector. The computer still cannot find the Ehman drive at
startup, (flash question mark). I even tried it with and without an
external SCSI terminating plug. No joy.
Thinking maybe some incompatibility with 7.6.0, I booted from a System
7.1 CD-ROM and used HDT again to reformat the drive, selecting one
partition, "bootable" and "automount". Exactly the same problem. The
drive works normally when it is found and mounted by an external
utility, but won't mount itself at startup.
Thinking maybe the Ehman drive needed to be formatted using its original
Ehman software, I dug out the original Ehman floppy that came with the
drive and tried to use the Ehman Formatter program contained on it. The
Ehman Formatter complained that it could not format the drive because of
"Incorrect SCSI Bus Phase".
Help.
