CardIndex is a baseball card database for the Macintosh. It combines a
player database with a card database; the card database currently has sets
fro 1948 to 1991, and then a few others. The program is currently
freeware. All I request is that if you download it and try it out, you
email me and let me know of any problems, suggestions, improvements, etc.
so I can make the program better.
If the program unstuffs so that all the files are in the same directory,
create two new folders - Data and Sets - in the same directory as the
program. Place the following four files into the Data folder - Namelist,
PlayerRecords, PLayerMrec, and Teamlist. Place the sets (pretty much
everything else except the program and the README) into the Sets folder.
The current version is 1.0

Subject: [*] Internet Logger v. 2.1.1FR
This is the French language version of Internet Logger v. 2.1.1 translated by
Philippe Bonnaure.
Internet Logger v. 2.1.1 is a utility application allows you to keep track of
how much time you spend on your internet accounts. It requires System 7 or
later. It can also be used to track long distance telephone use or to track
time spent on client accounts. First, among many other potential uses,
Internet Logger will provide a convenient means to fully document your
internet connections, including:
- Tracking session times and cumulative use time by day and month.
- Ability to enter complex session rate structures and automatically estimate
session
and cumulative costs by day or month.
- Ability to count down time remaining on either prepaid hours or hours
charged at a
flate rate.
- Optional Log file documenting session and cumulative times and estimated
costs.
- Optionally compute session times by rounding up to the nearest minute.
Some online
services seem to compute times this way. You can check it yourself.
- Allows automatic connection via PPP, SLIP, or operation as a manual timer.
- Allows multiple timers with individual settings. You can keep track of use
of
multiple providers conveniently. Each can have it's own log file.
- Compatibility with Open Transport when used with OT/PPP. FreePPP is also
supported.
New features in version 2.1.1:
Version 2.1.1 adds support for FreePPP 2.6 or greater and allows automatic
opening of internet browser or other application when Internet Logger is
launched.
Timers created with version 1.x are not compatible with version 2.x. Do not
try to open Timers created with version 1.x. Instead, keep version 2.x in
its own folder and create new timers using version 2.x. You may continue to
use v. 1.x simultaneously if you need to time two things at once.
Please post Internet Logger v. 2.1.1FR to: info-mac/comm/inet/conn/internet-
logger-211FR.hqx and please also retain the english language version currently
on the archive as: info-mac/comm/inet/conn/internet-logger-211.hqx.

If you would like to have small windows with quickly identifiable icons on
your screen, instead of a bunch of look-alike collapsed window titlebars (a
la Windowshade), then MiniWin is for you!! It consists of two INITs that
you simply drop into your System folder.
The Demo version will show you how MiniWin can make your life easier by
giving you more screen space when you need it. No need to close or move
windows! No need to hunt for the right titlebar! WOW!! Who could ask for
more??
If you like what you see, you may purchase the full version, which is a
self-contained control panel, for the paltry sum of $20.00. Upgrades are
free to registered users! See the Read Me file for the details on the
extras you get when you purchase the full version. Thank you for trying

For those who don't know ProMaker yet: ProMaker is a FileMaker Pro
productivity shareware tool for enhancing working with ScriptMaker. If you
are a FileMaker Pro 3.0 or 4.0 user or developer and write ScriptMaker
scripts this small application can save you a lot of time. ProMaker Utils
makes it possible to paste an entire ScriptMaker script (all steps) from a
TEXT file into a FileMaker Pro script. No more clicking until your hands
hurt, just enter them in one go!
Also works with almost all international FileMaker versions.
New features
------------
We have added the following features in this version:
- Restructured to enable build of German version.
- Fixed bug in calculation pasting under Filemaker 4.0.
- Added check for opening of the same file.
How does it work?
----------------
- Open FileMaker Pro and the script you want to paste the steps in.
- Use ProMaker Utils to open a TEXT file with the script-steps in it (some
sample text files are included).
- Enter the complete script by pressing command-E.
ProMaker Utils will bring FileMaker to the front and start pasting the
steps into the selected script. It is that simple.
System Requirements
Macintosh with 68030 or better or Power Macintosh.
System 7.1 or later (also tested on the upcoming 8.0 release).
ProMaker Utils requires 750 Kb of RAM.
ProMaker Utils doesn't use a patch or an extension so no potential
conflicts there.
Of course you need a copy of FileMaker Pro, this should be version 3.0v4,
4.0 or an International version.

Subject: [*] Reanimator 2.0.1
Reanimator 2.0.1.
What's Reanimator?
Reanimator is a utility for automatically restarting all applications
and background-only processes killed by another process. It can also be
used to quit all running processes and restart them later. A process is
a program running on your computer. When you launch an application, you
start a new process. Desk accessories are also processes, while control
panels are treated as extensions of the Finder process (see the
"Technical details" section below for further info). There are also
processes that don't show up when running: they are called
background-only processes. Many shareware and freeware extensions run
as background-only processes. Reanimator itself, works that way. I'm
used to run a number of applications and extensions in the background
(D=E9cor, MyEyes, DragThing, Eudora and other occasional utilities) and I
was tired of relaunching each one of them after running an installer,
rebuilding the desktop using a dedicated utility or running a game
instructed to quit all other processes, including the Finder. Reanimator
accomplishes this task in a single, quick operation.
What's new in 2.O.1?
General:
- Recompiled with CodeWarrior=AE Professional release 2.
- Mac OS 7.1 or later is now required for running Reanimator.
- Fixed problem with icons and Balloon Help not showing up properly in
the Finder.
- Added support for Conflict Catcher=81 4.1 vendor information format.
System Requirements
68020/030/040 or PowerPC;
64 KBytes free memory for the extension;
Mac OS 7.1 or later.
Distribution
Reanimator is 8$ shareware.
You can distribute Reanimator freely, provided that you leave the
software and the accompanying documentation unchanged. You can include
Reanimator in CD-ROMs and other software collections only by previous
agreement.

Subject: [*] ShowModal XFCN 1.01
ShowModal XFCN is an external function that lets you enhance HyperCard
stacks with customized modal and movable modal dialogs, just like real
Macintosh applications use. It lets you display dialogs with up to 31
interactive items, including a text list or popup menu, text entry boxes,
"static" text prompts, checkboxes, radio buttons, pictures and regular or
icon buttons, in nearly any combination.
ShowModal XFCN has several nice extra features:
* For dialogs with text entry boxes, you can use character filters to
allow only
certain text to be entered
* You can create splash screens that automatically close after a timeout
value
you specify
* You can use the "Special Key" feature to assign a command-key to one
button in any dialog
* You can specify locating the dialog at any location, or automatically
center
dialogs in the screen or in the current card window
* You can cancel a dialog by typing Command-Period or Escape
ShowModal XFCN requires HyperCard 1.2 or higher (this stack requires
HyperCard 2.0 or higher), a Mac Plus or better, and System 6.05 or higher.
ShowModal XFCN is CharityWare (details in the stack).

SwitchRes is a totally configurable Control Strip Module.
It is designed to simplify resolution changes.
You can define which resolutions are really accessible,
and which will require a confirmation. On PCI Macs, all
resolutions available to your video board are shown.
You can save the position of the icons on your desktop,
independently from one resolution to the other, unlike
the Finder. The position of the icons is restored at
startup.
You can assign a specific resolution to an application,
so that every time you use this application, your Mac
will automatically switch to the predefined resolution.
SwitchRes is distributed as a $9 shareware.
System requirement:
* Every Mac with MacOS 8 should run SwitchRes
* A multisync or SVGA display is useful, but not required...
There are an english and a french version.

TeleFinder/User is the application that connects your Macintosh or PC
to a TeleFinder bulletin board system (BBS via modems, ISDN or the
Intenet).
Through the TeleFinder/User-BBS interface, you'll find business
services, customer support, as well as friendly chat. A BBS can also serve
as a conference forum, provide electronic mail service, and store files to
be transferred.
Each individual or company operating the BBS (the sysop) determines
which services to offer its callers. The Sysop also decides whether the BBS
will be open to public use, or kept for private use.
TeleFinder provides an easy to use interface to work with files, mail
and messages by simply clicking and dragging icons.
TeleFinder also includes a text editor, address book, and a mail
outbox for automating the pickup and delivery of mail. The client software
is freely distributable. This software may be included on CD-ROM archives.

Developed with FileMaker Pro, ToolBOX consists of a series of related
database files that track serial numbers, versions, purchase dates and
prices, warranties and other information.
ToolBOX also stores thorough contact information about the developers
of your software and hardware. ToolBOX understands URLs. If you've
entered a developer's e-mail, web or FTP address, ToolBOX, in conjunction
with Internet Config, will launch the appropriate helper application and
point it to the URL.
And with ToolBOX's robust troubleshooting facilities, organizing and
tracking technical and customer support issues is a snap.

Bad Idea. Word 6.x is considerably slower then Word 5.1a, especialy on

Sounds like your startup disk is locked. (thought it can, also, be any

Plus I'll bet Nortton will find some corruption in your disk directory.

Do it the way Windows users do -- Uninstall, trash misc+preferences,
(reboot with extensions disabled) Reinstall.
Then limit your extensions to Netscape/TCP-IP only and try again. If it

A summary of info follows.
I found a very workable solution with PC BinHex 1.3, written at the
University of Minnesota. It can be found at:
http://www.simtel.net/pub/simtelnet/msdos/mcintosh/binhex13.zip
or
ftp://ftp.coast.net/SimTel/msdos/mac/binhex13.zip
This runs on my Windows NT, and should run under DOS and Windows 95. It
can convert both ways, binary to BinHex, and BinHex to binary. It has
worked fine on a couple of files I've tried.
For info on BinHex and other encoding formats, visit
http://VTGinc.com/ebennett/
and
http://www.natural-innovations.com/~boo/binhex.html
Other suggestions are:
On Unix you can use mcvert (it's in the Info-Mac archives; you'll need
to know how to compile).
On any platform with Perl installed, you can use
Convert::BinHex
You should probably be looking into using GNU tar
() on Unix and SunTar on Mac. I get
large Mac files to my Mac (which *is* on a network at times, but over a
modem) by tar'ing MacBinaries onto floppies and taking them off with
SunTar. (GNU tar is capable of making multi-floppy archives.)
For Unix (de-compress only):
ftp://ftp.coast.net/SimTel/msdos/mac/xbin23.zip
Also there is a program called binhex.exe that comes as part of the
commercial Aladdin Stuffit Deluxe package that will work on PCs to
extract and compress binhex files on the PC.
ZipIt is available at info-mac archives in the cmp directory, and can
compress and decompress PKZip PC files.
UUCD is available at the info-mac archives, and can decode and encode
.uue and .uu files on the Mac side that were created using a UUEncoder
on the PC side.
Thanks again for all the help and information.

My first suggestion would be MacLink, which can translate files in batch. But
MacLink doesn't handle Word formats earlier than version 3. (Neither does Word
6, for that matter.) Unless you still have those old versions of Word (and
something to run them on), you may be out of luck there.
Interestingly, Microsoft provides a batch conversion macro with WinWord 6, but
not with Mac Word 6. You could probably get a copy of the WinWord macro and
modify (if needed, only issue might be how it handles file paths).
Good luck,
Mitch

Subject: hierarchical folders
There's been a lot of discussion about using utilities such as PopUpFolder
to navigate through the folders on your HDs. Since sometime in System 7,
I've always kept an alias of my drives, including removables that were
regularly present, under my Apple menu. I don't 100% remember the setup
(mainly I don't remember if I needed to set something in a control panel to
turn hierarchical menus on), but I routinely use this to navigate through
my folders. Also in OS 8, there is the click-and-a-half to get the
magnifying glass and then you can burrow to your heart's content. Using
the magnifying glass at first feels like using the controls on a new video
game, but it really works quite well.

You probably can, but the result will be both more expensive and slower
than LocalTalk. The cheapest LocalTalk connection between two devices is an
ImageWriter compatible (Apple serial port connector on both ends) serial
printer cable. The second cheapest is PhoneNet clone connectors (about $20
each from MacWarehouse or a retail store that carries Mac stuff). The
advantage of PhoneNet connectors is that it's possible to string together
more than two devices (two Macs and a printer, for example).
