According to Apple's Technical Q&A #ME05 , getting this error message in MacOS 7.6 or later is generally an indication that some bad piece of software is corrupting your heap. You can't patch it; you are going to have to track down the software that is causing the problem. The application that is frontmost when you crash may not be the problem. You can do the standard sorts of things to try to track down an extension/application conflict. Conflict Catcher may be helpful in doing so. You already have MacsBug installed; if you know how to use it, you can use MacsBug to analyse the heap and perhaps get at the problem that way. Using MacsBug for more than restarting the Finder is beyond my expertise; maybe some one else can help you there. Everything worked well until yesterday. After a systemupgrade from 7.5.5 to 8.0 (complete new Systemfolder) the popup-menus in every dialogbox of O-Foto no longer work. You see, Windows users usually don't know much about their computer - they just download something and HOPE that the file will de-compress and install on its own... ;-)) Therefore, make it easy for Windowers and Macers, and make the files a ".zip" archive (but not a self-expanding one). These can be decoded by WinZip or PKUNZIP on the Windows side, as well as with StuffIt Expander latest release. The files are much smaller than something compressed and then binhexed (blown up) again. I do it like that for the distribution of a FileMaker file containing our catalog. Look for it at . I would appreciate opinions from readers on whether they think it is worth the while and expense to upgrade from System 7.5.5 to a later version of MacOS. I have a Performa 6115 with 24MB RAM and a 350 MB HD. I use it at home and most my time is spent on the internet between browsing, newsgroups, info-gathering and email. I am presently considering purchasing System 7.6 for less than $20, and it sounds like a good deal compared to the apparently many problems people are having with 8.1. All things considered, I'm happy with 7.5.5; my only complaint is that my dial-up connection with my ISP invariably hangs up midway through 100% of my sessions. So I just dial up again, which is more an inconvenience than a problem. I'm using OT 1.1.2 with Netscape Navigator 3.03 (Communicator was too slow a behemoth). I'm wondering if upgrading my OS will help here; that is, who is most responsible for my connection problem - OS, OT or Netscape? I've heard that 7.6 and 8.x are purportedly more stable. It is called "Path CMM" (appropriately enough). It is small. It goes with the Contextual Menu function in System 8. You Control-click on a file and in the CM menu is an added item called "Path" and inside it you can choose to copy just the path of the file to the Clipboard, or the Path along with Zone and server. I hope you have system 8! I don't recall where I found it. If you can't find it yourself, I'm happy to send you a copy of it. It is $1 shareware. I was having trouble with files on my hard drive becoming locked with no apparent cause. The problem was a corrupted hard disk driver. I updated the driver and the problems no longer exist.
