Subject: 8.1 users with Norton, Anubus, APS, or Megaphone beware
Dear Digest readers,
Oh my...My whole internal hard disk has been wiped out. Why? Norton
can't handle HFS+ (the new file system that comes with MacOS 8.1). That's
the final verdict from an Apple Service Technician I spoke to. Norton
3.5.3 won't try to diagnose an HFS+ formatted system, but earlier versions
might. In the process a whole hard disk can get wiped. Hard disk nodes
get zapped. The drive can no longer mount until it is reformatted. Master
Directory Blocks are corrupted. As a result, all my e-mail received for
the past month is gone forever. Luckily the rest of my software is backed
up.
Also I learned that Anubus drivers under version 4 are quite old. The one
that came with APS Powertools 4.0.4 was 2. something. I was told not to
install MacOS 8 on any Anubus driver versions earlier than version 4.
Norton 3.2.1 is not recommended by this same technician for any MacOS
versions after 7.5.5.
On a side note, Megaphone, the software that comes with US Robotics
Sportster Voice modems does not work with OS 8.1 either. In fact, the
distributers of the latest version 2.0.9 (which is not what comes with USR
modems) state they are working still on an OS 8.1 compatible version.
Back to old OS 8 until these problems have been fixed.
After a low level format the internal hard disk does work again fine.
The moral of the story: before you upgrade operating systems, make sure
with each company you have software from that their software version X
works with OS version X. If that company has not tried it, consider
yourself a beta-tester with all the risks that are imposed on one.
Just thought I'd share with you what I had learned.
Sincerely,
abrody@smart.net

The method I prefer has the following advantages:
0 No swapping/resetting settings.
1. No user needs special instructions on how to open her/his mail.
2. No danger of errasing someone else's stuff, by accident.
3. No floppy disks have to be swapped.
4. No need to be constantly afraid of reading someone elses mail,
since no two users share the same "In" box.
On the down side, however, it is slightly more involved then the other
methods -- up front and on the next upgrade.
The other disadvantage is that different-User Mailboxes, do tend to clutter
your desktop. But this is an afterthought.
Here it is:
A. Duplicate Eudora as many times as there are users [minus one:],
(don't forget the licence fee:).
B. Change each Eudora's name to [ Eudora/Mailbox)] (ex:
Andrew's Eudora OR Adam's Mailbox, OR Julie's Mail)
C. Open each Duplicate copy of Eudora with ResEdit, find a STR#
resource, open it, get down to the STR# ID=6200, scroll down to number 14,
the one that says, "Eudora Folder"); Change that string to the name of
that person's mailbox (ex: "Andrew's Eudora Folder" OR "Julie's Mail
Box"). Watch out for file names longer then 30 char's. Save each and
close.
Not bad, abrody@smart.net? YMHO, HET ??
The result is that each user will have her individual mail folder, residing
in the same system. Each mail box will be segregated, (but equal:), and
there would be no danger of people messing up each other's mail, (unless
they wanted to).
As further precation, make Individual Eudoras forget their passwords, so
if, in the worst case, you have someone that likes to dig through other
people's Mail, at least, she will not be able to download fresh stuff.
And you are all set. Good luck, Abrody

Num lock, just like a caps lock is a binary switch -- it's either on or
off. You can set it either way inside MsWord, but outside of word, in some
other programs, such as Eudora, it is not accessable and continues to be
either lit or oFF no mater what you do.

the computer's been working fine. Thank you, Peter, and to all those who

Subject: [Q] Epson Stylus 800 Printer Drivers
I am running a StarMax 5500/200 with MacOS 7.6.1 one partition, and OS 8.0
on another.
I recently bought an Epson Color Stylus 800 Printer, and downloaded the
latest driver (5.00AA) from the Epson wes site. I installed the driver
in 7.6.1 with extensions off, and AppleTalk disabled, and after a couple
of tried actually manages to print one page.
When I came back the next day and selected the Epson printer in the Chooser
(AppleTalk still off), the computer froze -- no falling into MacsBug --
and the system has been wierd ever since, with random crashes in various
stable applications (like BBEdit and Stuffit Deluxe).
I then tried to install the driver in MacOS 8.0, since the latest update
was specifically required to work with 8.0. Again, a freeze when selecting
the printed in the chooser, but now it fell into MacsBug 6.5.4(xx) and
I was able to recapture some data with StdLog, though I can't really
get any clues from it.
Does anybody have experience with this printer/OS/computer combination?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Dan,
Here are my impressions. I will also post to info-mac.
> I read some good things about the Epson Color Stylus 800 :

>* ethernet-networkable -> how is Epson implementation of this with the
>adapter? Does the machine print faster?
If you get the Epson Stylus RIP, and have the SC800 connected to a computer
on the ethernet network, the RIP will broadcast to any other mac on the
network that has client software (free) installed. Installing the RIP
writes to the PROM in the printer, much different than StyleScript. This
allows any mac on the network to print to the SC800. You don't need
ethernet on the printer, just connect to the serial port and select with
PSPrinter.
>* color quality and print speed -> do they print out pages fast? how are
>the colors for graphics work?
For good quality color printing for student handouts or tests, I use the
720 dpi Plain Paper setting, with Hammermill Jet-Print 24# paper
($6.12/ream in quantity). At this setting with moderate color content, it
prints 3 ppm, running on an 8600/200.
For the best quality, I use Hammermill JetPrint Ultra Gloss at the 1440 dpi
setting. I can't tell the difference from a photograph, using files that
have at least 360 dpi resolution.
For non-glossy, any of the coated ink jet papers are good.
I used to run my SC800 at home on a Quadra 700/68MB, but it was horribly
slow. My home mac, an 8600/300 prints similar documents on the SC800 about
100 times as fast.
>* PostScript options -> I know that Epson offers a PostScript RIP
>(software). Since I print alot from QuarkXPress, I need this feature. How
>do images' quality change / reproduce? What about the resolution?
The Epson Stylus RIP is good, although it needs 20-30MB of RAM to run. I
print Pagemaker documents faster than in non PS mode. Quality is set in the
features section of PM. I don't use Quark.
>* Has anyone used these printers with StyleScript (new Freedom of the

I own a previous version of Stylescript and could upgrade for $49, but for
home I will probably buy the Stylus RIP for more money. Anyone know a good
source?
>* What about the cost of the consumables? Do the C M Y K inks come in

There is a high capacity black cartridge and a CMY cartridge that is also
used in the SC600. There is a place on the web that sells the black or
color cartridges (Epson brand) for about $21 each. With moderate color
content (3-10 small images), the cartridges last about 1000 sheets.
If you want third party cartridges, you can order from Lyben, assuming
their web page is up now. The third party cartridges seem to work as well
as the Epsons, but they are only about $2 cheaper. They also sell refill
kits for the original cartridges at a very low price if you don't mind
getting your hands a little C, or M, or Y, or K.

Subject: [Q] Iomega vs SyQuest
Hi Macophiles!
A couple of years ago we bought a SyQuest EZ135. Six months ago it began
behaving strangely; we ended up sending it back for a replacement. Just
before this, we also needed to send a couple of cartridges in for
replacement. I'd have to say their customer support is NOT the best I've
received. Their automated "expert" help system is a complete PITA -- I
ended up telling it lies, just so I could get through to speak to a real
person. That person was worse than useless, etc, etc, etc. FINALLY, and
I have to say I suspect it was pure luck, I got through to someone who
actually knew their stuff; this guy spent half an hour on the phone with
me while I cycled the power on the SQ, restarted my Mac, etc, etc.
My question is this: since the technology has now advanced somewhat from
135M, we're considering upgrading. And since the new SQ drives don't read
the old 135M cartridges, it seems that we can also afford to choose to
move to Iomega if we want. We have no experience dealing with Iomega and
don't want to risk picking a company with worse customer support than even
SQ has (if that's possible!).
Does anyone have any advice regarding which company we should go with?

G'Day,
We have just purchased an Mac 7300 with Appleshare IP 5.0 Bundle etc...
In this pack we received a 250 user licence of Claris Emailer 2. What we
would like to be able to do is install a copy of this on 60 of our Macs.
As each user 'roams' from one machine to another we would like for their
email data to be stored in their home directory on the AppleShare server.
We have tried doing this by opening Emailer from the preferences file but
get a message 'Claris Emailer can not open files of this type'. We can do
this using Eudora Light, but allot of the users have multiple email
accounts that they would like to check at the same time, we don't really
want to have to fork out for 60 copies of Eudora Pro, when we have a 250
user licence of Emailer.
Any suggestions?

Can anyone recommend a compiler I could use to knock-up simple scientific
programs - commercial software or shareware.
I don't want to get involved with the operating system, nor have to write
half an operating system before I can get going on my problem. Requirements:
1. Language - don't care - Basic, Pascal, Martian ...
2. - but wish to import scientific numerical recipies with minimal translation.
3. Floating point - must have - preferably multi-precision.
4. Good number formatting for tabular output.
5. Simple graphics for curve plotting, with colour if possible.
6. Require as high performance as possible - suggests non-interpretive.
Nothing seems to offer good output number formatting any more. Algol68-R
was about the best of breed for that!
What has happened to the good old simple Basic compilers that one used to
get on the old home micros? It seems that now one either has to be a pure
consumer, or a serious applications developer. I want something just a
bit more sophisticated than a super programmable graphics calculator.

Dear Peter,
We received your DiskEssentials package today along with your letter. We
will be unable to process your return for a refund as the return is
substantially outside our 30 day MBG.
We will be returning DiskEssentials to you along with the latest version,
v1.1.4
The issues that you address in your letter are taken care of with this
version. Undoubtedly, there were problems with the orginal release of
DiskEssentials, but I think that you will find the latest version both
stable and reliable. Additionally, we plan on having a beta version of
DiskEssentials ready sometime next week that is HFS+ compatable.
Please bear with us, we will always do everything that we can to continue
to work with you and make you happy. Please let us know how this latest
version performs, and we appreciate you updating the email readers at the
Info-Mac groups as well.
Look for your latest version to arrive in the next 7-10 days, and we
appreciate your patience and understanding in this matter.

And below is what I replied. These folks are just, I donno wada saye...
********************************
This is entirely ridiculous.
First of all, you promise a refund if DiskEssentials does not work and furthermore encourage me to wait and try the new version. It takes you weeks to send me the update, and the disk is damaged to to your insufficient packageing. V. 1.1.2.1 similarly does not work as promised. I give the product one more chance and do try v. 1.1.4 after I finally find it on the net since the URL where you told me to look for it is dead, and v. 1.1.4 does not work for me. I do tell you so and you obviously lack the capability to read my letter. Now you tell me that you send me v. 1.1.4 where everything is allegedly fixed. In fact: ridiculous.
I will have MasterCard refund the amount paid. Furthermore, I will not be shy and tell everybody who wants to know my, of course entirely personal, experiences with your product and your company. Your company should find a place in one of Mr. Naders black lists.
Think twice before considering this as blackmailing.

Yes, there is a performance nastiness about HTML interpretation that I
fixed in 4.0.1 (currently in beta). But 4 minutes is over the top; I'd give
Eudora some more memory, as my guess is that in addition to the slowness
that I fixed, it's generally thrashing.

Yes, I'll get to that at some point.

There was quite the internal battle in Eudora engineering about this. It's
obvious who won. I won't go too deeply into my opinion of this, but suffice
it to say I was not on the side that won. :-)

Subject: Fwd: Ejecting Flyer Cart on a Macintosh
Dear Syquest/Silverlining Users,
When I remove the check on the Auto Eject box to prevent carts from Auto
Ejecting once the drive icon is moved to the trash, I should be able to
eject the cartridge ONLY when I hit the green eject button on the front of
the EZFlyer 230.
When I shutdown my machine, I should be able to eject the cart in the
manner described above (depressing the green button), but, the cart
doesn't eject. The only way to properly eject the cart at this point i.e.
the Mac shows "It's now safe to shut down your Macintosh" with a dark
screen, (short of using a needle on the emergency eject) is to restart the
machine, at which point the cart starts to eject right away. Does anyone
know why the cart doesn't eject after shutdown when I hit the green
button? It used to under earlier versions of Silverlining. I'm presently
at v 2.2 Lite or 5.8.2 for the full product.

Subject: Geoport 28.8 on 840AV?
I have downloaded the Geoport update 3.0 which should also make the 660
AV and 840 AV do 28.8 kbs - though the included Apple Read Me-files
claims those machines are not able to increase speed. Never the less I
have heard other 660 and 840-owners maintain that it actually works.=20
For some reason it=B4s not possible for me to make it work: Could someone
give me some advise. I have installed the updater on top af the
excisting Geoport 1.2-software, using system 7,1 and FreePPP 2.5v2.
TIA

Subject: how to destroy files?
I am using Norton 3.2.1 with the 7.5 operating system on both a Mac IIvx and
on a LC III.
I have put a number of things into the trash, emptied the trash, and then used
Nor ton unerase. The files come back. I then used Norton wipe and a utility
I downloaded, burn. The files are still recoverable.
I have gotten rid of all the Nor ton file recovery and optimization routines.
I have also gotten rid of fast find and so forth. How do I kill a file DEAD?
Why do neither wipe or burn work correctly? What do I have around that saves
the files, so that they may be recovered. I have also tried putting half into
a different folder, changing the names to names being used in the other
folder, moving them, and getting rid of the resulting conflict. And doing it
again and again. I still can recover the files. How do I get rid of
confidential informatin once and for all. What extension or control panel
might be hurting me?
Thank you.

Subject: laserwriter pro 630 - thanks
thanks to all that responded about my broken laser printer.
(and sorry that it has taken so long to respond, but as al bloom pointed
out - it is not one of those weeks, it is one of those lifetimes.)
anyway just to recap the lines on the pages were indeed caused by a printer
cartridge gone bad in some way. replace the cartridge and voila.
i did use an hp cartridge (in the laser writer pro 630) its the one for the
4, 4 plus, 5, 5m etc. there are a few advantages to hp. 1 in a pc world
they are more available at discount places like sams club etc and 2 hp puts
out different "sizes" (with more or less toner) so you can think short term
and save a few bucks if cash flow is an issue.
thanks again

Subject: Printer disappearing off network
Hi there, has anyone had this happen to them and does anyone know how to fix it?
We have an Apple Laserwriter 630 on our ethernet and the net is a mix of PCs and Macs. The printer keeps disappearing of the net neither the PCs or the Macs can print to it. The PCs are connected via a Netware server (which is using the Appletalk protocols) and the Macs are using straight Appletalk. The printer appears when first turned on, but disappears almost immediately
Thanks for any help
John Mansfield.

Subject: Small Networks
Dear Info-Mac,
A few weeks ago somebody posted a question about a question about what
Email software to use over a small Appletalk network.
I believe they were going to choose Casady and Greene's Communigate.
What happened in the end? What did they decide? I never saw the final
outcome of the question.
Can the person who posted this question let me know what they did in the end=

Subject: UPS protection for servers
We are about to buy some UPS systems to protect our servers (I've been
advocating this forever, but it finally became policy from the upper
stratosphere of the university). I'm mostly looking at the APC BackUPS and
BackUPS Pro. I don't think we really need the intelligence of the
SmartUPS, but I'm willing to be convinced. Any thoughts on these, or other
battery backup/power conditioner/uninterruptable power supply systems?

Subject: WallStreet emulation vs. 266 Pentium MMX
I work for information services for a large health system. Many Docs like
Macs but the geeks do not (I am both a doc and a geek). As a result I lug
a PB 2400c and a IBM 560 everywhere I go. I have used SoftWindows95 on my
PB and it is OK. But I need NT4.0 to run our automated medical record
software and other "enterprise" applications for the times I do my dog and
pony shows in the community. What I need is real head to head speed and
compatibility information comparing WallStreet with an emulator running
NT4.0 and a Pentium 266 MMX laptop. Compatibility and speed are crucial
because NT based continuous speech recognition software will be among the
apps I will be showing. Thanks for any help you can provide.

Hi there,
I know that this question may sound horrible even obscene but I wondered if
there is a program that will convert Windows 95 help files (*.HLP) to an
equivalent on the Mac (Adobe PDF, Apple Guide).
Any help on this subject is highly appreciated,
