My favorite garage sale purchase is an old LaserWriter (Circa 1985) (77 lbs)
I was able to get a manual, cable and another small part from
Sun Remarketing.
1-800-821-3221 and URL is http://www.sunrem.com/.
Have been using the printer for two years now and have no trouble getting
the toner cartridge at Frie's in the LA area.

Subject: (Q) HFS+ dilemma
Dear Digest readers,
Before I even think about getting a G3, I want to find out one thing.
Can a G3 machine be attached to an APS drive formatted with Powertools 4.1
under MacOS 8.0? I heard about some incompatibilities that either make it
impossible for an HFS drive to see the data on an HFS+ drive, or vice
versa. Now which is it?
If it is impossible for an HFS+ drive to see an HFS drive, then I am in
trouble. Without some form of a free formatter that works on an APS drive
to upgrade to HFS+ I won't be able to read my data when I go to a G3.
Please tell me this isn't so. Anybody have experiences?
If my applications are on my external APS drive, will the Open/Save dialog
box be able to see data saved on my internal drive, when the internal is
HFS+, and the external is HFS?
Or if the applications are on an HFS+ internal drive, and I try to open
data on an HFS external drive will the dialog box be able to do it?
Also will CDs burnt with Toast software while still using MacOS 8.0 and HFS
be readable in a G3 that has MacOS 8.1 and HFS+?
These are all experiments I wish I could conduct, but I don't want to risk
losing any data.
Please reply directly to my e-mail address below.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
abrody@smart.net

Subject: *New Video Card question
I have a Performa 6116CD. In attempting to expand to multiple monitors I
found that no-one makes a video card for this machine anymore. I was
informed by the Vintage Parts Dept. at Radius that if I could find a
nubus adapter for the pds slot in my machine they would be able to supply
me with a range of choices in video upgrade cards. Aparently this
adapter turns the card on its side so it fits in the pizza box of my
computer. Is there a source for this part? Is there a better place to
ask this hardware related question?
The reason I want to extend the life of this machine is that I am
considering a Newer G3 CPU upgrade and don't feel it is worth it if I
can't have increased ease of use through high resolutions and multiple
monitors. Does anyone have any opinions about these Newer CPUs one way
or the other, or know about any hidden (to me and my relative
inexperience) drawbacks to putting a new engine in an old car?
Thanks in advance for your help.

Subject: [Q] A database solution question
I have a question about creating a database of information. I'll describe my
needs, and ask you to suggest solutions:
I'm basically trying to keep a bunch of short articles on a subject for personal
use. For each article I want about seven fields of short information (one to ten
words) such as Source, Date, Important Points, etc. Then I want one much longer
field to enter an abbreviated version of the article, several paragraphs long in
most cases. I would like to be able to see all the data in at least the short
fields. Printability is not important to me; my goal here is to eliminate the
paper.
I have tried the database part of ClarisWorks, since I already own it, and found
it woefully lacking. I cannot control the width of the paper or the size of my
fields, so even the fields of short information are too small to show all their
contents. Maybe I'm not understanding ClarisWorks well, and just some
instruction here can solve my problem?
It seems like I should go with a spreadsheet, but I thought there might be
something better out there, like someone's home-grown HyperCard app, for this
kind of thing. I would like to avoid spending much money on this. (I'm sure
FileMaker Pro is wonderful, and their are lots of great things written for it,
but I'm not about to spend that kind of money for personal projects.) Any
suggestions are appreciated.

Apple has a page(1) that gives the toner for the LW IINT as p/n M6002.

Hi gang,
a client has a Power Mac 5500/225, built in Geoport Express Modem, OS 8.0
He is unfamiliar with Macs and has asked me to help him dismiss the
"feedback" he gets when anybody phones him on the shared Voice/Data line.
I have advised him by phone best as I can but as I am still on a 68K
running 7.5.5 and don't have access to the Apple Phone setup,I cannot be
100% sure of my advice being accurate. The local Mac dealers said to
unselect "Sound" in the prefs to fix it. It didn't. To rid himself of the
noise he has to unplug the modem from the phone jack. Makes me kinda
pleased I'm still using 68K to do the same job my colleagues need a PPC
for. If it ain't broke don't fix it. But I digress. Any folk out there
using a similar set up to my client? If so any idea how to stop the
screaming data blast? I seem to recollect reading elsewhere that certain
flavour early PPCs couldn't run certain modems. Any ideas?

I must have missed the original posting of this problem, but I hope I can
give you some help (if you haven't already solved the problem). First off,
definitely upgrade to OpenTransport PPP, then dump Internet Explorer 4.0.
It is buggy, and it is considerably slower than IE 3, which you could use
instead. Or you might try switching to Netscape Communicator, not that
that's much of an advantage. In my opinioon, Microsoft really dropped the
ball here. IE 4.0 for Macintosh actually got worse, in terms of speed and
stability. Therefore, no matter how much memory you give it, page loading
and scrolling proabably can't go any faster.

There's no WP 3.5.5. The successor to 3.5.3 is 3.5e. MacZone is wrong.
Call Corel at 800-772-6735. The upgrade, a complete CD, is $25 for 3.5
owners.
Run the 3.5e updater on this. That's important, as the patch adds
remarkable stability.

Subject: OS 8.1 memory leak?
Greetings!
I wonder, if anyone out there has experienced this weird phenomenon:
Machine: G3/233/96
After working for a few hours (it doesn't seem to matter which programs
have been active) everything gets slow like molasses.. scrolling,
selecting, etc.
While my system generally uses around 13-14Megs, a check under *About this
computer* reveals that it has swollen to over 28Megs.
A restart will eliminate the problem.
Any ideas?
Also: A week ago, I had asked about continuing start-up problems with
Netscape 4.05 - giving Error messages 1 or 2.
According to related reports in MacFixit it seems that the driver software
for my Epson Stylus 800 is the culprit.
Removing the Epson Launcher extension, which doesn't seem to interfere with
printing, has eliminated some of the problems. NS starts and runs -
however, at times, it balks at opening a new browser, in which case I quit
and replace the preference file with a fresh one, which I keep handy for
these situations.
Thanks to those who had sent me their suggestions.

Subject: OTPPP troubles
Can anybody come up with an idea on the oddities I currently experience with OTPPP?
I am one of the few lucky people that do not have to pay for every download, since I have had direct internet access at work since I got into first contact with the web. Recently, however, I found I should have access at home, too, so I got myself a modem, a cheap provider and installed and configured OTPPP. Everything went well until I hit the connect button: I dialog came up telling me the selected modem script file could not be found. In fact none of the several dozens of modem files displayed in the pop up menu can be found. I cannot even use one of the modem scripts coming with the original OTPPP package. The whole kaboodle does not even bother to talk to the modem.
This of course smells like HD corruption, corrupted desktop DBs or a PRAM problem. I checked, tried and found nothing (Norton, DiskFirstAid, TechToolPro). Extensions conflict? Reduced everything to standard minimal OS 8.1: No change. I guess the message might even be an error message for a completely different error.
BTW, I have not the slightest problem connecting with FreePPP 2.6.2. But I still don't have a clue about what is going on with OTPPP.
I am using MacOS 8.1, the OT 1.3 coming on the OS 8 CD and installed OTPPP 1.0.1 a couple of weeks after upgrading to 8.1 (are there more recent versions? I could not find a trace of them if there are). Everything is localized for Germany and resides on a UMAX Apus 2000/200 (= PPC/Performa 6500; if I correctly remember, machine type 58).
A clue, anybody?

From: Stephen Swabey
Subject: Powerprint 4 & DEClasers (& lack of response from Infowave)
This is a long history of why I'm not happy with Powerprint 4 and the
company which makes it - Infowave. It gets detailed, but if anyone can help
me sort out problems with a DEClaser and this software, I'd be very
grateful.
I bought a copy of Powerprint 4 at the beginning of March because I had
just obtained a DEClaser 2200 and I wanted to use it with my Powermac (Umax
Apus 2000/180) running OS8.1. The DEClaser has a duplexer, 8Mb of RAM and
does 8ppm on a PC, so I hoped to make good use of it with the Mac.
However, despite the DEClaser range of printers being listed in the
Powerprint manual as supported by Powerprint, I have been unable to get
anything readable out of the printer, EXCEPT for a cover page.
1) I used the recommended Canon LBP emulation in Powerprint, with both the
LBP-8 Mark III and LBP-4 types of printer available (although it must be
the LBP-8 emulation that applies, since the LBP-4 doesn't have the correct
number of paper trays listed in the Print dialog.)
2) I selected a cover page to be printed with the document.
3) I tried both Graphics (at the 3 different resolutions) and Draft modes.
The cover page always prints correctly, with the details of the print job, but:
1) In Draft mode the printer prints backwards question marks ("?") in bold
where the text should be.
2) In Graphics mode a variety of (predominantly non-ASCII) characters are
printed at seemingly random locations on the page, but with the characters
always printing at the top of the page and usually no further than halfway
down. The number of pages printed like this bears no relation to the number
of pages in the document being printed.
I have checked that:
1) The printer is in Centronics (Parallel interface) mode.
2) That Powerprint will print on other Centronics printers (a Mannesmann
Tally MT81) successfully - it will.
3) The DEClaser works correctly (it prints from a PC, it prints test pages
correctly AND it prints a cover page from Powerprint, but not anything
else).
4) I've followed all the instructions and trouble-shooting exercises in the
Powerprint manuals to the letter (including starting with minimal
extensions, watching flashing lights on the cable etc. etc.).
5) I've even eliminated the OS as a source of conflict, by installing
Powerprint on my LC630 running OS7.5.5.
It seems there is something strange going on when Powerprint tries to send
a job to the DEClaser. The cover page prints fine and the printer test
pages print fine too, so it must be something to do with the emulation I
guess. I've tried several other Powerprint emulations to see if Infowave
had just mislabeled the correct emulation for a DEClaser, but nothing more
readable has ever printed.
What really irks me is that I registered electronically with Infowave and
then asked for some technical support to sort out what was going on with
the DEClaser and Powerprint. I received an automated reply that the
question had been received and I "should expect an answer in 2-3 days".
That was on the 10th March. I received no reply in a week, so I
re-registered just in case they hadn't received the first registration and
then tried the question again. Still absolutely no response (not even an
email saying the question had been received this time!). I've tried asking
the same question once more and had not a peep out of them.
So... Has anyone got a DEClaser hooked up to a Mac successfully using
Powerprint (version 3 or 4)? What emulation did you use? Were there any
things which needed tweaking which aren't obvious from the DEClaser manual
or the Powerprint manual? Has anyone else experienced such poor support
from Infowave? Are they going bust and not admitting it on their website?
(Might explain why they're not answering technical support).
Any help gratefully received. - Stephen

I've heard back from 6 people. Despite the small sample, no one has

8100/80 (2 machines)
Duo 2300/100
6100/80
Powerbook 520 w/ a 117 MHz 603e chip upgrade
The users who have experience with multiple systems reported that there
was a noticeable speed difference between the 200+ MHz systems and the 80

All users reported significant speed gains in Word 98 over Word 6.
One person pointed out that I got Microsoft's recommended speed wrong.
Evidently MS recommends a 120 MHz chip or higher.

Subject: user parameter list????
Recently, I"ve started getting Error message -50 when trying to open
certain applications. I looked it up in a book and it said
"paramErr....error in user parameter list." This might as well be written
in Greek for all it means to me. Can anybody help???? What does this
mean? And, most importantly, is there anything I can do to correct this
situation??????
