Subject: [*] Language Toolkit Reader 1.3.2 - foreign languages learning
'Language Toolkit Reader' is an interactive multimedia program for language
learning. It features the integrated use of text, illustrations, sound,
QuickTime movies, vocabulary, exercises based on text and sound, and notes on
grammar. You use the program to access 'lessons' which are prepared
separately.
A teacher can prepare multimedia lessons for any target language by using the
companion program 'Language Toolkit Writer'. An associated program ('Verbs &
Nouns') gives access to additional support in the way of dictionaries, and
offers the opportunity for further practice of inflection and translation
at the
level of single words.

Subject: [*] PowerReplace 6.3; a text conversion utility
Announcing the release of PowerReplace 6.3! PowerReplace is a powerful
text conversion utility. It does the conversion using a small file called
"Filter". The syntax of filter is very easy to understand. PowerReplace is
also an utility to build text conversion application. It can create small
stand-alone daughter-application called "SelfReplace", who makes your
favorite conversion more easily and efficiently.
PowerReplace can replace character (including NULL, CR, LF, TAB) or string
by any other string. By use of the asterisk-sign(*) representing any
indeterminate string, it can replace also a string only whose two
extremities are known. It supports all character set, hexadecimal string
and regular expression(pattern) for find/replace.
ver. 6.2 -> 6.3:
- Added Stack Windows command in the Control menu. Use this
command to move all windows to its standard position.
- You can now add string to the begin and the end of the
text files. Syntax:
"*BOF*" "The begin of my file.\r"
"*EOF*" "\rThe end of my file."
- Fixed a few bugs.
System requirements:
- System 7.1
- Any Macintosh

Subject: "PowerDimmer" permanently dim! (fwd)
Hello, Info-Mac folks --
My computer is a PowerComputing PowerCenter 150 with 16 physical
megs, running System 7.5.3L (revision 2), and RAM Doubler 2. I use
version 4.2 of "DarkSide of the Mac," a screen fader extension, as my
primary screen-whatchama, but I also have active a system extension
called "PowerDimmer," version 1.0 by Paul Mercer, which apparently works
with Energy Star monitors and lets you define periods of inactivity
after which it will dim the screen or finally shut the screen off.
Well, last night I had to be away from the computer for quite a
while, so when I came back, the screen had been shut down. I could get
the screen to turn on again, but I could *not* get it to un-dim.
I still can't. The computer has been restarted several times;
I've tried removing the extension and re-starting; the best I can get it
to do (which is not good enough) is to brighten during start-up, but just
after showing the desktop, it dims out again.
Please suggest what I can do! This is really bugging me!
E-mail replies to feldspar@netcom.com appreciated.

Subject: [A] Personal LaserWriter Memory Upgrade
Hi Doug and others,
I have performed the memory upgrade on the LS and it is easy to do. The
only problem, is that it uses 16 or 18 pin (can't remember which) IC chips
not SIMM modules. You replace the ones in there with (4) 256K chips.
Order the Apple 1Mb Upgrade Kit LWLS (4x256K) Part # 334-0114.
I purchased this kit on March 21, 1995 and it cost $39.00 back then.
You have to pop the top of the printer and then add the new chips. It was
easy. I think you also have to move a jumper in order for the new memory to
be recognized.
Have fun.

with their excel program. She can run excel and work
on a new spreadsheet. But after saving and closing the spreadsheet
she can no longer open the file. this has happened to all her
previous saved files. Any idea as to what could be causing
this? Desktop has been re-built and Disk Doctor cannot find
any problems. running excel 2.2 on an older mac under sys 6.

Subject: further questions on networking to NT
First, thanks to all who answered my original post in early December.
Activating SFM worked fine except that the only thing visible to me on the
NT server is the Microsoft UAM Volume with an AppleShare folder and some
UAM info. The volume is write-protected. The sys admin hasn't quite
figured this out yet. How do I get access to all the other NT files? Is
writing to the server possible?
Thanks again,

Subject: Mystery attachment??
Allan Hunter asked in Info-Mac Digest #284 about a mysterious .vcf
attachement, and some answers on the list suggested that this was a PC-only
format.
Here are the facts: a .vcf file is a so-called vCard, a file format
designed to exchange contact information as a kind of electronic business
card. The format can not only contain text information, but also a photo,
company logo or sound (telling the receiver how your name should be
pronounced). It is a platform-independent format, based on MIME. There is
also a companion format called vCalendar, designed to exchange meeting
information.
More information about this, and a Mac development kit which includes an
application to view and create vCards can be found at http://www.versit.com
This standard is supported by several applications - I think that Netscape
4 uses this format to add contact information to an email message. I do not
know if any work on this standard is still being done ...

Subject: Old PowerBook model question...
I have an older PowerBook (180) that suffers from the infamous blown fuse
on the motherboard that doesn't allow batteries to recharge, etc., caused
by the cracked tip of thr AC adapter.
Some time ago, I remember seeing a step-by-step article on how to replace
the fuse yourself with an in-line fuse holder) in MacWorld, MacUser, or
some other periodical. Of course, now I can't find it, and the online
search engines of these magazine sites don't go that far back (early
90's).
Anyone have any insight as to where these instructions are? I know Apple
had a free repair program, but that ended long ago. Warranty is long
gone too.
And in response to some answers I know I will inevitably get: I am very
experienced at opening up my PowerBooks and doing repairs and
installations, so please don't anyone "lecture" me on the dangers of
doing it myself. I am quite capable.
Please email me directly at stjones@frank.mtsu.edu if you can supply any
info. Thanks in advance!

Subject: Performa 6116CD question
I hope that someone can help me answer a few questions before I take my
hard drive into my apple retailer (who aren't the greatest when it comes
to customer support). I have a Performa 6116CD (system 7.6), purchased in
'95, that has been pretty reliable until Sunday. The hard drive is one of
those thin-but-large, desk-hogging varieties, with a manual power switch
at the front. I have a power-off key on the keyboard but no power-on
key. So, Sunday, when I went to turn on the computer (using the manual
button) I got the start-up chime and a blank screen. I waited a few
minutes, then tried to shut it off with the power-off key, but got no
response. So I then turned on the computer again manually, and this time
got a normal startup scree for two seconds, then it restarted (just as if
I were zapping the PRAM). This time, it started up normally, but sure
enough, the PRAM had been reset. I scanned the hard drive with Norton
Disk Doctor and Disk First Aid, and it came up clean. If I restart the
computer from the Special menu, it starts up normally, and my settings are
preserved, so I don't think it's a dying battery. My conclusion is that
there is something wrong with the manual power switch. Has anyone else
experienced this problem? Why is my PRAM being zapped the second time I
press the power switch? Any estimates on the costs of repairing a problem
like this? I apologize for the length of this message, but I do
appreciate any assistance.
Sincerely
Jenny Tenlen

Subject: print preview in netscape
Hello
Last week I sa somethin' on a wintel machine that made me a little (just a
little ;-) ) jealous....
They were able to make a print preview in Internet Explorer or Netscape on
a win95. Now I'm looking for a utility that does the same on my mac.
WHy ? This would allow me to make a print preview of the page so I can see
how the printed version will look like. I would like to make pages that
look good with netscape but that also can be printed the way I want. A
print preview utility would save me a lot of paper and time .
Any ideas ?
Thanks

Subject: Settings not being retained
Hi.
I am running MacOS 8.0 on a Performa 5200. I have noted the following
problems.
(1) Certain settings are not being retained if the computer is powered
down for a while. These settings include the Date and Time
(including the Time Zone), the Mouse speed (including double-click
speed), the highlight color (in the Appearances control panel).
(2) When I start up, a totally blank (other than containing an "OK"
button) dialog box appears on the screen after all the System
Extensions have loaded. This box eventually goes away (after
about 30 seconds or so). Clicking the OK button seems to have no
effect.
Given the symptoms in (1) above, I replaced the battery. This changed
nothing.
Does anybody have any suggestions here? Thanks.
