Subject: [Q] HFS+ and .zip files
I had been successfully interacting with my Windows95 co-workers, providing
graphics files in .zip archives created with ZipIt 1.3.8, when suddenly, and
sadly, my solution broke. I added a new G3 to the mix. The new machine's disk
is formatted with HFS+. The Windows person to whom I send files (mostly .GIFs
) opens the archive and they are all fouled up. Not the least of the problems
is that the long filenames are sometimes replaced with 8.3 DOS filenames.
(previously the long filenames were transmitted correctly.) I've noticed
aberrant behavior when moving the .zip files to a DOS fat16 partition in
VirtualPC as well. This did not seem to occur on my 7300 with hfs standard
format drives. I also tried copying the files to the dos partion and then
zipping them using WinZip, but that doesn't seem to solve the problem. Any clues?
Thanks

I must have fallen asleep when this was first asked, I only saw the

Subject: Filesharing in OS 8.1 & 2GB Jaz Drives
I have 2 users that are using 8600/300s, OS 8.1, Internal Zip and Jaz
2GB drives. Both use filesharing on their computers. If I start the
computer up with no Jaz disk in it, filesharing starts fine. When I
then push a 2GB Jaz into the drive, I get the message, "Filseharing
could not be enabled" when the disk mounts. I can share Zip disks so I
do not think the Iomega 5.5.1 driver is damaged. I can read and write
to the Jaz disks just fine. The other problem is that if the user
leaves a Jaz Disk in the drive and restarts the computer, Filesharing
will again fail when the desktop comes up butthis time it is for the
whole computer. To restart filesharing, I have to reboot with no Jaz in
the drive.
I spoke to Iomega and they said that Filesharing won't work with 2GB
removable media. It is a limitation of the OS and Apple's fault. This
was a Level 3/Engineer that told me this. I was wondering what you all
think?
Please respond to my email directly at mh@nih.gov. Thanks in advance.

Subject: Iomega blues
Something similar just happened to me with an internal Iomega Jazz
drive. There was also a clicking noise after which the disk became
unreadeable. I had to buy the TechTool Plus utility to try to recover my
data which was in HFS+ format. Iomega was also willing to replace the
drive and cartriges - although in my case, it was still under warranty.
There were symptoms before the crash: the disk took a very long time to
mount, and once mounted, it took a long time to open folders. These
symptoms lasted for a couple of days, and then suddenly the drive died
with the terrifying noise.
Trying to figure out if the failure was due to the cartridge or to the
drive, I stuck two more cartridges into the drive. Both were damaged.
TechTool reported unrecoverable directory problems. (The new Disk
FistAid Apple utility was totally helpless. It gave me the widely
reported problem manifested by the message that repairing could not take
place while other applications were opened (the application being the
Finder)).
The moral of the story: if you notice slow Jaz disk mounting or folder
opening, keep cartridges away from it and call Iomega at once. Backing
up is, naturally, not a bad idea.

Anyone know how they are on Jaz drives? I have owned 7 Jaz cartridges now
(the 1 MB variety), of which 5 have died, in increasingly rapid turnover,
culminating in the last one which was a replacement for a previous dead
cart, which died when I tried to format it, i.e, within less than an hour
of breaking the shrink wrap. Obviously, something has to be wrong with the
drive! I know Jaz cartridges aren't rock-solid reliable but this is
ridiculous!
Mine is not Iomega branded; it is from ProMax, which has since the time of
purchase stopped dealing with Jaz drives; but the internal mechanism is
identified by all my SCSI and formatting software products as an Iomega Jaz
drive.
I would pay some money to have it peeked at and adjusted or cleaned or
refurbished into something that reads writes and formats disks instead of
eating them and their data. Would strongly prefer not to enter into an
arrangement that would cost me more than buying a refurbished Jaz drive
from catalog, which I've seen advertised for around $299. And if they tend
to go bad easily and there's much risk of this occurring again, I think I'd
just as soon write off the Jaz drive experience as a senior-level course in
the Misery in Removable Storage Drives series (Floptical, SyQuest, and now
Jaz, ugh, just give me a couple huge hard drives and I'll RAID the damn
things).
I live in the NY area. If anyone knows of a shop that will peer at and
give me an estimate on turning this cartridge-eating monster into a
functional drive for an entry-level bench charge, please let me know.

Subject: Mac Plus Freeze & Bang
Here's another strange one. Thanks for putting up with all the illnesses
of my Antique Plus, 68000 4MB RAM, SYS 7.0:
After recently trying out Ricardo Ettore's shareware Sounds4Fun, my Plus
started acting strangely. While running only ZTerm (which I guess
eliminates system and application stacks colliding), everything just
freezes. The last viewed screen is still up, but nothing else works, no
mouse, nothing. Trying to restart with the programmer's restart switch
does nothing. So a full hard reboot is necessary. Off goes the power to
Mac and HD, I wait a good 60 seconds, power back on, and there's no
familiar system beep saying the CPU is awake. The screen brightens, with
only horizontal lines. It is only after I BANG the left side of the Mac
(analog board) that I hear the system beep, then everything else is
normal. Of course after a freeze I rebuild the desktop, go back to work
with any application (ZTerm or otherwise), and sooner or later it will
freeze again. I have long since removed Sounds4Fun, but this problem
persists.
I notice I DON'T have this problem when booting from one of my SYS 6.0.8
disks, so I now suspect extension incompatibility. But System 7 doesn't
have a Compatibility Checker that I have found yet. Does anyone recognize
any control panels or extensions below that are known NOT to get along?

Subject: Making Boomerang work?
Help, help! Untl a few days ago I was a happy user of NOW Super Boomerang
and NOW Startup Manager. Something went wrong, and now I can't get either
one to work. I used to use Version 4, but then I got the upgrade to Version
6.5. Originally I had Version 6 on a CD, but then I got the upgrade to 6.5
from the Internet.
Now I have installed and uninstalled, and fooled around with various
configurations (order in file list, using different versions, etc.) and have
had no luck getting these two programs working again. The computer keeps
telling me that they didn't load at startup so they aren't available for
use. When the icons showing the various inits load at the beginning, the
NOW toolbox icon is shown with an X through it.
What on earth am I doing wrong? I have a MacIIsi with 17M RAM, the standard
80M hard drive that came with the MacIIsi. I am using System 7.1 and have a
lot of inits and extra utilities. However, turning them off doesn't seem to
help, so perhaps they are not the problem (?).
Can you suggest what I should do to be able again to use these two programs
(and some of the other NOW utilities)?
Thanks for any advice you may have to offer.

I suppose I have to add Macromedia Dreamweaver to the list of potential
HTML editors. Version 1.2 is out now, and Macromedia seems to have worked
all the bugs inevitable in a v1.0 product. Dreamweaver handles all the
regular HTML features beautifully (i.e. tables, frames, etc.) but its
DHTML, CSS and Javascript capabilities are unmatched... literally. It
handles javascript /DHTML without exposing the user to any scripting and
can organize a site that utilizes cascading style sheets. It supports
precise positioning and it comes with the full version of BBEdit. It is
tightly integrated with BBEdit and Netscape or IE as well. It has link
checking and site admin features. A great piece of software. The only
problem is that it is HUGE. It installs 19mb worth of stuff on the hard
drive and it requires a lot of ram. But if you've got a fast mac and can
spare the disk space, it's worth it.

Gene:
(A1) Using Apple's MoviePlayer 2.5.1 (with the installed system bits of QT
3 gives you most (all?) of the functionality that they've removed from
MoviePlayer 3) get to the QT moov frame you want and choose Export from the
File menu. I gives you quite a lot a choices. One of them is Picture.
That's PICT to most of us. Save that and you get the single frame.
(A2) Click and hold on the image in Netscape or Explorer to bring up a menu
that offers, among others, to let you save the image locally. You can also
drag 'n' drop (or perhaps option+drag) the graphic right out of the browser
window and onto your desktop. Use GraphicConverter by Thorsten Lemke
(US$35.00) to open, edit and save as just about anything - including
startup screens.
