Subject: Q: Drop down menue in System 7.5?
Hi all,
I seem to remember that I could set the menue to "drop down" instead of "pull down" in System
7.5 - but I can't remember on how it is done. Can anyone enlighten me?
TIA.
Markus

P.S. I'm perfectly happy with "pull down" on my PowerMac, but on my PowerBook 160 I'd
prefer "drop down"

Subject: (Q) Computing day number
Does anyone know of a simple application that computes a date (month and
day) for a given year from a day number (1-365 in a regular year, 1-366 in
a leap year) and vice versa?
Thanks!

Subject: (Q) Font management question
Upon installing a variety of graphics and greeting card preparation
programs, I am wondering whether I have exceeded the number of fonts the
system can have at any one time. I saw a error message about having more
than 128 fonts. (I am currently running OS 8.1 on a Power Mac 7500).
Is the system limit 128 files in the font folder or 128 font families (some
files seem to be the same font but one is normal, one is bold, etc.)?
How can I check how many font (families?) that the system sees?
What is the best way to manage more than 128 font (families?)? Can one
activate groups of fonts and deactivate other groups without rebooting? In
particular, can this activation/deactivation be tied to launches of
particular programs?
Are there recommended freeware/shareware applications to do this
activation/deactivation on the fly or, if necessary, upon rebooting?
Thanks for whatever advice is offered!

Subject: (Q) WDEF Leopard
While installing OS 8.1 and moving over non-Apple elements in the previous
system folder, I came across the control panel "WDEF Leopard". Is the
problem that this was addressing under 7.x still present under 8.x and,
consequently, is it useful to keep this control panel in under 8.x?
Thanks in advance!

Subject: [Q] Looking for a Font Called Hog Book
I just got a letter from a friend of mine done in a font she said is called
Hog Book (there's also a Hog Bold). She said she found it while playing around
in Word Perfect 6.1 for Windows (yeah...one of them), but doesn't know any
more than that about where it came from.
I'd really like to get my hands on a copy of that font. Does anyone out there
know its parentage and where I can find it?
I did the obvious and checked the archives, but didn't see anything with a
similar name.
Hmm...for that matter, does there exist a "master database of fonts" anywhere
out on the web?
Thanks!

The attachment with this issue cannot be opened
by my NETSCAPE BROWSER,because Netscape doesn't
provide a plug in for the format used in the attachment.
QUESTION = why send a file to a mac user, in a mac related ezine,
in a format that a mac cannot access ?
I'm not being sarcastic.
I just don't get it.

Subject: No dial tone
Hi,
I have asked this question previously and thanks to those that responded,
This is the question I asked to Global Village, and their response.
I have Mac Performa (PPC) which has an internal GV platinum 28.8K modem/fax.
Problem occured last week after a mild thunderstorm. My modem is connected
to my phone line. Previously, I would be able to connect to my email,
internet and when disconnecting, I was able to immediatly use any
telephone in my house. Now, when I am using my Mac (not using the modem)
with the phone line going to the modem port connected, I cannot get a dial
tone or if a dial tone occurs, the phone message that I need to hang up and
redial occurs. Of course, then when I hang up, I do not get a dial tone.
Disconnecting the line to the modem port then allows the use of the phone
as usual. If I then try to reconnect the phone line to the computer and
dial out, I get a "no dial tone" message. Immediate disconnect and
reconnect then again allows for the use of the computer for email, etc.
Of course, I could continue to plug and unplug for computer use and phone
use, but I wonder if there is anything I could do to bring the modem back
to its prior state.
BTW, I do not think there was anyother electrical changes due to the rain
storm.
Their first automatic reply concerned using "Zterm" and "AT". They said
that Zterm should have been installed in my Mac with the internal
Fax/modem. I cannot find it on my Mac, using fast find. I wonder if Zterm
can be found and downloaded onto my machine.
Their next reply was that they are not responsible for the Global Village
Platinum Fax/Modem which was installed at the Mac factory.
Their reply:
OEM Bundled Modems/Software
Please be advised that the manufacturer of your computer supports, warrants
and replaces the Global Village modem and GlobalFax software (if available)
included with your system. Many parts of your computer, such as the main
computer chip, disk drive, or monitor may have been designed and
manufactured by companies other than the brand name on your computer.
Global Village helped design and manufacturer the modem that came with your
computer, but doesn't offer free technical support for it.
Any further help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks to all for your help

Subject: Q: Applescript task
Hi,
Does anyone know how to do the following to help me automate finder
format backups of a few files. I wish to write a script that will drag
files from one window to another on another disk, thereby copying the
file to the new location. However, it will have to replace an older file
with the same name. My limited scripting skills have me stuck. Thanks,

Subject: Two new technologies
Hello,
I work for a Technology Transfer Center. We take previously developed
technologies and find commercial applications for them. The center works
with privately funded technologies and NASA funded technologies.
I would like to get your opinion on potential commercial uses for decoding
Manchester Gray coded binary signals. The new technology offers a means of
decoding optical wave division multiplexed Manchester Gray coded serial
binary signals. The benefits are accurate and reliable transmission of
binary coded spectral data, forgiving of variability in data spectral bit
width and absolute wavelengths, and automatic level compensation of incoming
relative spectral data.
Could you please send your feedback to me at:

I would like to get your opinion on potential commercial uses for Manchester
pattern faulty recognition, i.e., the acceptance decision for a decimally
encoded data stream with a missing digit. The new technology offers (1)
retransmission of information reduced by acceptance of data that is
ambiguous only in the last decimal place; (2) less chance of confusing data
bits with synchronization bits by use of a single leading and a single
following synchronization pulse.
