I've backed up everything I own on eight CD's. I'd like to find a
cataloging utility that would read all of the files on each CD and
create a usable catalog. Any recommendations?

A good friend just had a hard drive crash that rendered almost everything
useless. That was not great but she was ok, as she had made backups. The
problem is that her original disk one to install claris emailer 2.0 is
damaged so she's stuck. Could someone who owns it send a disk image over? I
assure you the person in question is a licensed user.

I'm attempting to use lpdaemon 3.4 to print from unix to a mac 3400 running
os8.1 attached to a stylewriter II. the file appears to get transferred
but lpdaemon doesn't sent it to the printer. I'm using the following
definition:
PRINTER sw SERIAL ".aout" 9600 10 N 8 #
modem port
does anyone have any thoughts. or any other ways to print from unix to a
mac attached stylewriter or any other printer for that matter.

any one know if one is made? Since PCMCIA cards are interchangeable is
there a software driver that works for a peecee card out there?

No they are not. I have often experienced that if a download is very
slow or even stalls on several tries, changing the ftp client does the
job. I've found situations when nothing could beat Netscape (and I hate
ftp'ing via Netscape), others when Anarchie was the absolute champ, and
also some when Fetch or NetFinder were on the top.
If you like it that way: yes, Anarchie is more different from the other
ftp clients then are the others from each other.

It is likely that the signal from a magnetic phono pickup is too week to
be used directly for this purpose, Also, there is a matter of the proper
equalization. But, one could use a mag phono preamp, or a hi-fi amp with
mag phone input. Then connect the line-out from the amp to the audio
input of the Mac. As for the proper plugs and sockets, Radio Shack, or
other electronic distributors, can supply the needed connectors and
adaptors.
I don't think Toast will digitize the sound and save it as a file. There are
numerous recording programs, though. Quick Recorder is available from
the Info Mac Archives, and the shareware price is quite low. I have used
it.
There is a problem though. In order to put the recorded music files on a
CD, the recording must be sampled at 44KHz. And, for fidelity, one would
want 16-bit digitizing. If you pick "stereo" mode, the sampling data rate
may be too high for saving to hard disk. I was digitizing songs from a CD,
and had to save the data into RAM disk in order to have a high enough
data-save rate. That means that one must have enough RAM disk space
to hold at least one complete song. With 80Meg RAM disk, I think I was
able to capture about 7 minutes of music. As each song was completed, it
was copied to hard disk. When I had enough "tracks" to fill a CD (up to
650 Meg) I used Toast to burn the CD.
It will be interesting to see what other info comes in on this subject.

Help!
Just installed EUDORA PRO 4 (upgrading from the demo) and the Plug Ins no
longer work.
(I've rebuilt the desktop, duplicated the old Eudora Pro folder & run the
'new' Eudora -- which runs fine excepts that it does not recognize the plug
ins)
All bright ideas would be appreciated.

Subject: HP Deskwriter 320 probs
Hi gang,
I've been lurking too long lately, bout time I had another problem. Here
it is: recently bought a Pios Keenya clone, 32 MB RAM, 200 Mhz,OS 8.1
etc. All was well until I plugged in my trusty old HP Deskwriter portable
to do a print out, not. Chooser recognises the driver, but there it loses
the script. I ma told the printer isn't recognised. I've spent a short
time hacking at it trying every thing I know plus a bit of stuff with
AppleTalk that I don't know to no avail. Anybody had a similar problem?
Will it help to use the modem port instead?
emails preferred as work keeps me away from home base and the pesky thing.

Subject: mail servers and Macs
Here's a chance to help change the world for the better. A PC-based friend=
of mine who runs an ISP here in Cambodia is looking for software that=
allows a Mac to dial up to an ISP, check several POP3 mailboxes, hang up=
the phone. Then the users (also on Macs) must be able to log in to that=
machine and pick up their respective mail, preferably with password=
protection. Also users must be able to send mail using their own email=
address (which wipes out the option of using Outlook Express.)
It's a company with multiple users who want to contain the cost by using a=
=20
single machine but also provide security on individual accounts. They now=
use a cc:mail solution.
He says on a PC he would install a mailserver and email client on the same=
machine. The server would be set to dial up periodically and download all=
the mail. Then individual users fire up the client using their own=
profile. The client then connects to the mail server. Could all be housed=
on the same win95 machine.
Any ideas? Please e-mail to garella@libertynet. Thank you!

Evidently your software is leaving the serial (modem) port connection open,
which apparently won't allow the computer to shutdown or restart until it's
closed.
There are several utilities for forcing closed a recalcitrant serial port.
I currently use PortView, by MegaWolf software (freeware), but there are
several others such as CommCloser, probably available on Info-Mac. Sorry,
I can't point you to the exact locations.
You might also try turning off TCP/IP, if that's the kind of connection you
were making. However, this may not work. Hope this helps. Cheers,

Hi there,
attached is Incognito 1.2b2, an update to Incognito that works with Quark

Incognito. Note: this is the _last_ version of Incognito.
Incognito is an init/cdev that lets you to bypass network-based copy

Apparently my monitor makes a very high whistling noise. Fortunately I do

What can it be and how can it be eliminated? Help is very welcome.
