Blame the Pentagon for that :-/ , not Nescape Corp.
Since 4.0.5's sources are available to non-us citizens, including 128

Subject: (Q) FTP with Finder like interface
Dear Digest readers,
I've asked this question before, and all I've gotten is software that
crashes.
Anarchie - plenty of Type 1 errors, icons too small, bookmark handling is
not simple.
NetFinder - plenty of Type 1 errors, icons too small
Vicom FTP client - not compatible with MacOS 8.1, icons too small.
NetPrezence - plenty of Type 1 errors
Fetch - the nicest program of all, but not as well integrated with the
Finder as I'd like. FTP Dialog box isn't as big as it could be.
Now if there was an FTP program that used the Finder interface to drag and
drop files to and from the FTP server the same as can be done on AppleTalk,
that showed dates modified file sizes, and full file names, as well as an
editable path field (like Internet Explorer for the PC, and file renaming in
the style of the Finder, as well as a dialog box reporting how much data has
been sent/received, and how much is left to be sent and received, I would
get it. Also if it could be integrated with the Open/Save dialog box that
would be great to. Plus it has to be OpenTransport and MacOS 8.0 and 8.1
compatible with no crashes.
Now granted it is a lot that I am looking for, but if something is in the
development stage I'd be happy to beta-test it.
Sincerely,

Subject: (Q) setting the time on PB and desktop via Enet
Hello. I just bought my PowerBook G3 and am very happy with it. I have
started to use a program called File Synchronization that came with the PB
to transfer a few file from my desktop (PM 6100) to the PB.
My question is about setting the same time and date for both machines, so
they retain identical settings after I disconnect the ethernet.
The online guide for the PB and this program don't answer my question
directly. Is there some type of program that can accomplish this for me?
Also, I have tried to synch my Eudora Pro folder from my desktop to my PB,
so I will have all the up to date mailboxes. Can I just move the IN and
OUT files or do I have to transfer the entire Eudora folder?
Thanks in advance.

I believe that NUM 4.0 will be compatible with Mac OS 8.5. Symantec has a
beta version out right now that you can try out. Go to <
http://shop.symantec.com/cgi-bin/trialware/Core/Core.pl?REGION=na&LANGUAGE=
english&PFT=903132110&INDEX=1&KDATA=kDaTaHeRe> and fill out the form and
you'll be sent to the page to download a beta version of Norton Disk
Doctor 4.0 and Norton Speed Disk 4.0.
Be careful to read all the warnings and disclaimers about using beta
software. Before you run them, be sure to backup and sensitive data in
case something goes wrong.

I have also played with Personal Web Sharing (way cool!). I have not
really ever u/led anything. I have however 'published' with Netscape. I
use Netscape 3.0 Gold. You must specify a publishing address in the
preferences. After specifying this address the publish command will be
available in the file menu.
Check the Netscape homepage for more info on the 'publish' command.

Hi Andreas,
I read about your problem booting from the CD-ROM using the 'C' key and a brain cell just fired up.
I seem to remember reading something in the TIL about there being a problem with the 7200 (Catalyst
logic board) that prevents users booting using the 'C" key. It recommends trying
command-option-shft-delete instead. Try it and let us know if it worked. If this is true then this
problem will also be applicable to the Power Computing PowerCenter series.

Hope this helps,

I have a problem with my CD-ROM. I am trying to run my MacOS CD 8.0 from
my CD-drive in order to fix the problems that the 'disk first aid'
program has found on my hard drive. I have a PPC 7200/90Mhz.
When I try to start up the system from the CD with either c-key or
changing the control panel start up disk (or both) the system won't boot
from the disk which means that I can't fix my hard disk problems.

I work with 7200/120's and it seems that if you hold down
Shift-Option-Command-delete (which tells the computer to start from the
next avilble startup device), this will bring up a flashing questions mark,
because it wont recognize the CD for some reason. THEN press "c" and it
seems to work.

Subject: Can I make a removable with separately bootable S7.0.1 and OS8.0
I administer a number of Macs ranging from a G3 currently running OS8.0 to
Performas with very minimal RAM operating on an early version of System 7.
I have been trying to construct a 'universal' rescue/tools/installer disk
by partitioning a 1G Jaz disk and installing S7.0.1 & Tune-up on one
partition and OS8.0 on the other. Checking this on the one machine which
will run with either system (Quadra 700) reveals that when the S7.0.1
partition is selected as the startup disk the machine nonetheless always
boots from the OS8.0 partition. (Installing S7.0.1 & Tune-up on another Jaz
disk produces a properly bootable volume so I don't think that there's any
problem with the system s/w per se). Am I doing something stupid here? Is
there any way of making a 'universal' rescue disk of the kind I need?

Sorry don't have an answer but would like to know how to get rid of the

I have had no problems with any app and frankly the menu item is really
annoying.
My help menu expands to contain the message and on my 640x480 screen
something like 'turn off Contextual menus in Netscape Navigator=99 3.0

Then doubleclick the copied installer and it will look into the folders
1 level down instead of wanting to see a disk.
If you have disk image files instead of folders, you can mount them with
DiskCopy 6.x so that they appear like real floppies to the operating
system.

There is no startup chord, no sound at all, when I press the PowerUp button
on the keyboard of my PowerPC G3/233. But the sound works well
subsequently, including all alerts, playing CD's, etc. I have set the Sound
Panel in the Monitors and Sound Control Panel to "Sound In", "CD", and

System Volume Level is set way up, and the Mute box is not checked. I
should add that I have a Sony Trinitron Monitor with speakers and I have
routed the sound to the Monitor. Any help would be much appreciated.

Subject: OT/PPP vs. MacPPP
Can anyone point me toward a good sorce of information on the subject of
Mac PPP connections?
My PowerBook 5300 came with MacOS 7.5.3 which provided MacPPP and
MacTCP. These worked fine, maybe even more reliably than Open Transport.
Over time I have upgraded thru 7.6 to 80 and 8.1. I now use OT/PPP and
TCP/IP. These also work fine and offer many options not previously
available plus scripting.
What troubles me is this; I have heard that some Macs (NuBus?) preform
better under MacPPP and some (PCI?) preform better using OT. I have yet
to switch back to MacPPP. I would really rather not (I still remember
that ugly transition phase where one protocol would be 'invisible' while
the other was operating *sigh*)
Any light shed on this topic would be appreciated.

Subject: Summary - Fax Servers
Firstly thanks to all who kindly shared their knowledge with me. I will not
list them all individually.
I have decided to post a summary to the list as many people emailed me
privately to indicate that they too were interested in information on fax
servers.
So on with the summary.
Can anyone out there with better knowledge on these matters than me please
let me know what options there are out there for fax servers - ie a server
that operates on a single modem and gives people access to faxing via a
network. Networks is mostly Macs - but has the odd PC.
Shareware preferred - but it may have to be a commercial application.
General
Some fax server software requires a dedicated Mac as a server and then a
couple modems and if you want more then a multi-port serial card and more
modems. Some are worse and require an additional dedicated Mac as a spooler
as well as the server Mac.
Not sure about PC connectivity with either product. You might be out of
luck there, although it's possible that something running over Microsoft
Exchange would do the trick.
1. Global Village One World fax server
Several people mentioned this one. Thanks to Ben Rollins
and D. Scott Beach .
The Global Village ONeWorld server solution is also very good, if a little
pricey (it includes a network modem as well as a networked version of the
GlobalFax software, so if you already have the modem and/or a server
machine in mind, it's probably not worth it.
Global Village made a great product called a One World fax server which was
an ethernet box with one built-in modem and a slot for a second. This
didn't require any dedicated Macs, was upgradeable by adding another modem,
more RAM, getting a flash upgrade to make it a shared network modem and an
ARA server and it came with a 30 user licence.
If you wanted further expansion you could just stack them. They had a nice
small footprint, around 5"x8". However it didn't come with a PC client and
Global Village may not even sell it anymore since they're now owned by
Boca.
2. CommuniGate from Stalker
Several people mentioned this one. Thanks to Vittorio Barabino
(bromo@flashnet.it) and Klaus P. Fechner
CommuniGate from Stalker - http://www.stalker.com - highly recommended!
(Not sure if they have a PC client...)
Communigate (it's a series of modules - for fax, for email ecc.): it's
free for <5 network users. I don't know if there is a PC version.
3. Fax Express
Thanks to Ben Rollins
Don't know of a shareware product, but I've had good results with Fax
Express (distributed in Oz by Fosh) - simple to set up, relaible,
scriptable and able to work with FileMaker databases etc.
Glenwarne Home Page (manufacturer) http://www.glenwarne.co.uk/
You can run it on any old modem and a cheapo Mac - I've set up a 14 user
netowrk using an LC.
4. No shareware solutions were mentioned (unfortunately).
I also did some searching on the Ziff Davis site and found an article about
"Ten ways to recycle your Mac" - August 97 MacWorld.
It said - "You can combine an older modem running at 2400 bps with an older
68030 based Mac to get yourself a fax server with software such as STF
Technologies' FaxSTF 3.2.3 http://www.stfinc.com - naturally they did not
elaborate on how to do it.
Perhaps this summary may prompt others to mention possible other solutions.
