After a bad crash on my 6500/300, I re-installed System 8.1. I'm now gradually dumping stuff from the "Previous System Folder" but I can't get rid of the old Preferences folder. I've examined it with FileTyper and it doesn't contain any invisible files. I've tried renaming it, but it still won't go away. I've tried creating a new folder with the same name, but it won't let me replace the hell folder. I can move it to the trash, but I can't empty it from the trash. I get one of three dialogs: saying it can't be removed because it contains items that are in use; saying an (unspecified) disk error occurred; or saying an error of type -127 (I think) occurred. Sorry if the answer is blindingly obvious, but I'm stumped... ------------------ "Things are entirely what they appear to be and behind them ... there is nothing." - Sartre andy jukes andy_jukes@sunshine.net ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 29 Oct 1998 20:21:40 -0400 From: "Stephen B. Whenever I boot from my internal IDE with external scsi's on (i use them for backup), the desktop windows "flutter" and, except for the internal IDE, will not stay open. All drives are low-level formatted with Drive Setup 1.5. Any ideas? Thanks. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 29 Oct 1998 21:01:26 -0500 From: Marlon Deason Subject: Digital Camera Wanted I can't say you won't find them, but the first comsumer digital cameras are just now getting into the sub $100 range. I just picked up an Apple QuickTake 150 for $150 on eBay. I saw quite a few QuickTake 100's going for around $100. But the 100 can only hold 8 hi-res (640x480) at a time. The QuickTakes are cool because the are scriptable with AppleScript. Otherwise, they are comparable to simular cameras of their era. Other good cameras to look for are the Kodak DC 20, 40 and 50 which are mechanically the same camera as the quickTake. But one caveat, many of the newer mega pixel cameras are available with greater features in the range of $150-199. Check out the Umax PhotoRun. Until recently, I had no problems with Fetch. Other than updating FIleMaker Pro to v. 4.02, Netscape Communicator 4.5 and Norton Utilities v. 4.01, nothing has really changed in my Mac's configuration. Nevertheless, every time I try to launch Fetch, Norton Crash Guard gives me a message saying that the application has crashed - unmapped memory exception. I threw away Fetch's preferences, tried zapping the PRAM, rebuilding the desktop, running disk doctor and first disk aid. I also tried running Fetch using only Mac OS 8.1 extensions, but nothing has worked. Has anyone experienced a similar problem? Egidio ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 29 Oct 1998 14:50:37 -0600 From: Ted Logan Subject: FreePPP and OS 8.5 There have been reports that FreePPP 2.6.2 or FreePPP Menu 2.0.3 or both don't work right with Mac OS 8.5. Can anyone please confirm or deny? And I read something about OT 2.0 in 8.5 now including Applescripting. Does that mean we can now write our own OT/PPP modem scripts with proper initiation strings? I hesitate to install 8.5 until I know I'm not forced back to using OT/PPP with a built-in, uneditable modem script that doesn't work. Up to 8.1, FreePPP solved that problem. What about 8.5, please? I just recently upgraded from my Quadra 630 to a SuperMac S900, and while the performance boost is more than welcome (I *love* this new machine!), it lacks one thing the 630 had, namely an IDE bus. Anyone know of a PCI IDE controller card for PowerMacs? I'd love to pick up one of those dirt-cheap IDE hard drives they advertise everywhere, but am currently stuck with SCSI. Sure SCSI is fast, but it's more than I need, and the drives are just too expensive. TIA... I have seen other ISPs distibute installation scripts that will automate the entire process, right down to telephone numbers. This aside, it is fairly simple to negotiate your way through the setup procedure. Apple's OT/PPP is dead simple. Chose your modem script in the modem control panel. In TCP/IP control Panel, connect via PPP, configure using PPP server, and enter Name server addresses in the box provided. In PPP control panel enter login name password and connection number, configure options as per your requirements. I hope this helps. At the time, the CD-R was not yet available, so I opted for the ISO 230mb format diskettes. MY criteria was two fold; 1) sufficient space for multiple backups [ I have 5 partitions of HD and have logical backups for each ] yet 2) sufficient speed to allow a sets of applications to be off-line until needed. My development environemnt is on one 230mb format diskette with space for MANY projects. No need for backups as the media is only exposed when mounted, and have you seen a compiler crash a system? I've had the magnetic optical for 4 years and have had the occation to preform partial recovery on one partition only TWICE. NO media failures!
