DIGITAL DIARY (v1.8.4)
Activity and Decision Organizer for the Macintosh
INTRODUCTION
System Requirements: System 6.04 and up, Mac Plus or better (including
PowerMac),
1.6 megs free RAM, =B11 Meg disk space
Demo available for downloading from our web site at
'http://www.yaletown.com/gta'
Digital Diary is a project management center that gives you
fingertip access to the current status of any of your projects, allowing
you the ability to go back to see all activities on all projects on any day
you choose. On a complex project, there could be a dozen or more separate
issues being dealt with at the same time, each of which has its own
distinct status and decision process. Wouldn't it be great to be able to
pull up the history of each of these issues at any time?
Digital Diary organizes note entries into project and day files so that
current reports of all activities on any given day or project can be
instantly viewed. Projects are organized under user-defined categories in a
hierarchical pop-up menu. Projects can be easily transferred between
categories, making it ideal for use as a convenient project status
indicator. Entries are identified with a header containing the type of
activity, project name, category, note number, and date and time of entry.
'To do list' entries will pop up to remind you of unattended items at a
chosen future date. Versatile report generation can gather, for example,
all notes of a given activity type or project status.
While most personal information managers focus on scheduling and
contacts management, Digital Diary concentrates on keeping an organized
record of your work, allowing you quick and easy retrieval of a project's
history when most needed.
Here are a few of the many uses of Digital Diary:
Business, Sales, and Consulting:
* Project activities and decisions
* Upcoming deadlines, meetings, and appointments
* Telephone and meeting records
* Discussions with suppliers, consultants, clients and co-workers
* Decisions made and communicated to clients, co-workers, and subordinates
* Directions received from clients, authorities, and management
* Decision / activity 'streams' relating to issues within a project
Academic and Scientific:
* Experiment progress notes
* On-going research projects

I had the exact same problem when I upgraded to System 8. I did find a
shareware photoshop plugin for this scanner, but I found that the colour
reproduction and details were lost compared to Ofoto's quality. I then
began restarting with sys 7.6.1 every time I wanted to scan something!
Until I found the answer to your problem: an extension called "OS8foto",
which is available on info-mac. Just drop it into your system folder,
reboot, and you'll forget that you ever had this problem!

Version 2.0 is a total remake of DollyDots for Kaleidoscope, almost all
parts have been redrawn to get the look we wanted. DollyDots is inspired

Subject: [*] gURLfriend 2.0 (bookmark utility)
What is gURLfriend?
gURLfriend is a utility that will parse your Netscape or Internet Explorer
bookmarks files into a format that is more convenient to post on to a web
site. Your browser's bookmark file contains much more information than
you would expect. Besides the bookmark's name and URL information such as
the date the bookmark was last visited, the day it was added to your list
and comments you may have added. This extra information almost doubles the
size of the bookmarks file and is removed by gURLfriend. The gURLfriend
application also searches through your bookmarks list and indexes all the
bookmark folder names and creates a table of contents. This table of
contents greatly speeds up access to your online bookmarks since you can
quickly jump to the folder you are interested in without having to
transfer the bookmark information for the URLs you are not interested in.
Why would I want to use gURLfriend?
If you are like me you put a copy of your bookmarks list on your home
page. By using gURLfriend you will significantly decrease the total size
of this information and also make it easier to use. My bookmarks file size
went from 97K to 56K after running it through gURLfriend. It is also
indexed which makes it easier to use. A parsed bookmarks file takes much
less time to transfer when posted on your page.
Most importantly, if you break the folders into separate files, the time
the is required to access a particular bookmark is significantly reduced.
The table of contents file is a fraction of the total size of your
bookmark information. Mine for example is 3K.
Also, gURLfriend strips all information except the URL, its name and the
comments if you allow them to be kept. All other information is removed
which not only reduces the file size, it also removes possibly sensitive
information that you might not want posted to the net.

Hellosh Software Releases Hextris 1.0
Were you addicted to Tetris but found that it wasn't challenging enough?
Then Hextris is for you! Hextris is a strategy/puzzle game reminiscent of
Tetris but based upon a hexagonal grid and offering a significantly more
challenging experience. It features rich, color graphics, 2-D and 3-D
rendered, textured hexagonal playing pieces, smooth 60 frame/second animation,
sound effects and vocal commentary, complemented by an original background
musical score.
The playfield is organized as a 10x20 hexagonal grid and playing pieces
consisting of four hexagons each fall toward the bottom, stopping when they
hit the bottom or another piece already fixed to the grid. When a horizontal
row of hexagons is "filled in", it is removed and the remaining hexagons
above it are moved down.
Hextris features four difficulty levels, a 25-place high score table for each
difficulty level, full statistics saved with the high scores, autoplay where
the computer plays the game by itself, customizable controls, background
music, sound effects, and vocal commentary, and basic on-line help.

Ever need to set an application's memory size higher to open a large
document? You'll need to find the application, do a Get Info and change
the size, then change it BACK when you quit.
Or, do you have several large programs that are set to use a lot of
memory? Whenever you need to use two of them at the same time, you go
through the same process to keep the first one from using the memory the
others need.
LaunchControl can do all this for you, and more, whenever you open an
application (even by clicking a document icon - you'll never need to
locate the application itself again.) Just hold down a hot key when
opening, and you'll get a dialog that lets you:
- Open at the minimum, maximum (the maximum size is displayed), or any
other size in between.
- Save the new size if you like.
- Cancel, if memory is too low and you don't want to wait for the
program to start up, quit and free up more memory, and start it again.
LaunchControl is fully functional $10 shareware. For more info and the

as a complete mouse replacement. It DOES provide the ability to lock
down and/or click the mouse from the keyboard, and to change the amount
moved/keypress. It needs NO modifier keys; you can use them as usual
(to option-drag, for example). NudgeMouser should be compatible with any

According to Jon Hueras the new Appearance Extension
introduced with Mac OS 8 changed the system's internal behavior in a subtle
way that caused Ofoto's popup menus to break.
He has posted on Info-Mac a small extension that supplies the behavior that
Ofoto expects so that the popups can work again.

I found the following help and it cured the problem:
Dec 3 Macintouch
Wendell Sykes described some problems with Microsoft's latest Word 97-98
Converter:
"When installed on a Mac, it places among others,
files called 68K PNG Import, 68K JPEG Import
and 68K Metafile Import in the Word Extensions file in
the Word folder. The presence of any or all of
these files will cause Word to issue an error message
saying that it could not find the graphic filter or
that it does not have enough memory to display
graphics when loading a WordPerfect document in
Word for Windows 6 format containing graphics. True
enough, a converted Word 6 document
containing graphics loaded after this message does not
show embedded graphics in the document.
Increasing the preferred memory size to triple the
normal has no effect. Removing these three files
restores the graphics display."
Rich Brown followed up with some additional notes on Word
conversion:
"I had the same experience as Wendell Sykes with the
latest Word 97-98 Converter when trying to
open (on a Mac) Word 97 files saved in Word 6 format
(on a Win NT machine). Equations and
graphics did not display. However, directly opening
the Word 97 file on the Mac using the converter
worked OK. Note however that any graphics generated in
Word 97 cannot be edited by the Equation
Editor in Word 6.01."

I've always found this to be a strange way to buy a computer. Here's the
answer: it's obsolete right now. What you should be thinking about is
whether or not it can do the jobs you have in mind for it.
I bought my wife a G3/266 for Christmas, and my office mate got one in
January. At the moment, they're the hottest personal computer you can buy.
It's a delight to use, and my office mate is continually amazed by the
throughput of the built in Ethernet. But long before the end of 1998, I'll
bet they'll be discontinued in favor of something even better. Even so, if
I needed another computer right now. I'd buy one in an instant
The techical specs are easy to find. If they meet your needs, go for it.
If not, look elsewhere, or wait until something comes along which does.
But if you're going to wait for a computer that isn't obsolete the day you
buy it, you'll wait for ever.

Subject: help for Mac 636
All of a sudden, my daughter's Performa 636 started exibiting strange
behavior. Every once in a while it will begin emmitting regular "beeps"
reminiscent of a heart monitor on "ER". While the beeping occurs, the
screen and mouse are locked. If she ignores the beast, the beeping stops
and everything goes back to normal. Needless to say this is annoying and we
worry that it is an evil portent of impending failure. Any Suggestions?

Afraid I can't give an explanation, but I suspect that if you ditch

you won't get getting the message any more. CrashGuard is poison.

Subject: Naming ZIP cartridges
Can anyone help me with a problem I'm having re-naming ZIP cartridges?
We just bought and installed a ZIP 100. For some reason, I can't rename
the cartridges.
We have a PowerMac 7100/66, w/System 8.1, and the installation process
seemed to go OK. The first time we inserted any cartridge, I was able to
rename it, but since each cartridge's first insertion, I haven't been
able to rename them, with one exception. I rebuilt the desktop of that
cartridge, and renamed it successfully. But that technique worked only
once.
One of two things happens. Either the name of the cartridge doesn't
highlight when I click on it, the way it would if I clicked on the name
of a floppy. Or, the name does highlight, and I can type in a new name,
but as soon as I hit the return key, the original name returns. Thinking
"FindIt" might have something to do with the problem, I changed the
preferences so that no drives would be catalogued. That hasn't helped. I
think I saw something here a couple of weeks ago that someone else was
having a similar problem, but don't remember seeing a solution.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated at roszel@concentric.net.

When I try to view a tape (or record a clip) with the Apple Video Player I
get no audio.
The video is fine.
My Sound Input is set to AV Connector, with "Listen" checked.
However, no sound comes through. When I switch the Sound Input

Connector kills the sound.
