New features since the first public release:
Primarily fixes to ensure correct use of these scripts.
* Disk Copy version checking;
* Pre-segmenting image checksum verification;
* Image format checking;
* Creation of a "Segmented Images =9F" folder on the desktop for the segment=
s;
* Inclusion of Greg Meece's Floppy Archiver 1.2;

This package contains mapping ("translation") tables for both
Add/Strip (info-mac/text/add-strip-322.hqx) and
PowerReplace (info-mac/text/power-replace-63.hqx).
These tables enable you to convert RTF and text files with special
Esperanto and Maltese characters between MacOS and MS Windows.
Every self-respecting word processor should be able to read and
write RTF (Rich Text Format). Thereby you can transfer documents
in Latin-3 characters (Albanian, Catalan, Dutch, Esperanto,
Finnish, French, German, Italian, Maltese, Spanish, Turkish)
*with complete formatting* between Macintosh and MS Windows.

Subject: [*] CookWare3LM
CookWare3LM for 15" monitors.
CookWare isn't just another FileMaker Pro cookbook - customers have said
it's the best one they've come across.
CookWare doesn't have a lot of fields to fill out, making it much less
time consuming and easier to use than other cookbooks, yet gives you
excellent multiple search capabilities.
Download recipes from USENET or the WEB and then drag and drop into
CookWare - simple.
The interface is easy to use and nice looking. You won't have the feeling
of being lost in this program but at the same time it's quite
comprehensive. It includes 280 hand-picked, wonderful recipes (no
"filler" recipes). More are available. Req. FileMaker pro 3.
If you have a 13" monitor you can download CookWare3 and other FileMaker
Pro Software at:

Subject: [*] Cool Blue Deluxe Folder Icon Creator 1.6.1cb
The Cool Blue Deluxe Folder Icon Creator uses the new Cool Blue icon set
posted at the Icon Factory and the very nice Deluxe Folder Icon Creator
utility for creating custom folder icons to allow you to create really
nice looking Cool Blue custom folder icons.
Yes, this is a hack.
Neither the author of Deluxe Folder Icon Creator nor the author of the
Cool Blue Icon Set had anything to do with the release of this little
applet. The DFIC has been modified to use the Cool Blue Icon Set as its
template for creating new folder icons.
However, with a DFIC update not having been released in years and Cool
Blue Icons being as cool as they are, it seems the natural combination.
The Cool Blue folder set works quite well with the DFIC applet to create
custom Cool Blue icons for your desktop! Since the Cool Blue set already
has replacements for all your system folder and standard icons, this
allows you to create customized folders for your other applications
and/or utility sets. Check out some of the examples I have included to
get ideas for your own icons.
I hope you enjoy it, and that it works great for you, but since it is a
hack, you use it at your own risk and no guarantees are made about the
operability of the software. Don't write me or the other authors if it
doesn't work.
Have Fun!
Dave Bailey
davebailey@usa.net
PS- The Icon Factory is incredible! (no, they didn't have anything to do
with this applet either, so don't bother them.)

Subject: [*] CoolViews 1.1 - Enhance the OS 8 Finder
CoolViews is a utility that adds functionality and visual enhancements to
the MacOS 8 Finder. With CoolViews installed, you can reorder and resize
columns in Finder window list views, get rid of shaded sort columns and row
separators, set global list view preferences, override the date and time
formatting used by the Finder, and even enable "secret" columns.
MACOS 8 IS GREAT. AND WITH COOLVIEWS, IT'S BETTER THAN EVER!
Every preference in CoolViews is customizable. You can use as much or as
little of its functionality as you need: from the simplest enhancement to a
complete overhaul of the Finder's windows. If you want to shorten the date
used in Finder list views, decrease the column widths, and eliminate the
lines separating rows, you can do that. If you want to completely override
folder-specific list view preferences, use funky background colors in your
windows, and add columns showing the creator and type of every file, you
can do that too!
Versions of CoolViews are available for both PowerMacs and 680x0 Macs, and
in Japanese as well as English. CoolViews is compatible with MacOS 8.1 and
works with other appearance-modifying utilities like Kaleidoscope.
WHAT'S NEW IN VERSION 1.1
CoolViews 1.1 introduces a number of changes that make it even cooler than
before. Much of the interface has been redesigned. For example, CoolViews
now includes a "mock" Finder window that allows you to visually modify the
columns in Finder list views. The most significant new feature is the
ability to reorder columns. You can also now resize (and reorder) columns
without globally overriding column visibility. Also, in addition to
removing the separators between rows in Finder window list views, you can
now choose to colorize the separators instead. We recommend that all
CoolViews users upgrade to version 1.1.

Subject: [*] Desktop Resetter 1.0
Do you keep your most used programs and files on your desktop for
easy access? Ever accidently choose Clean Up in the Finder or find that
after you played that fun game which switched your monitor resolution,
your icons got all screwed up and thrown all over your desktop?
Especially after you just spent all that time placing them nice and neatly?
Desktop Resetter will 'remember' where you keep your icons, and if
they ever get moved, just run this program and it will automatically
re-arrange them to the positions you had set them to! It'll even do it in
the background. If you have an '040 processor or better (PPC), it will
probably only take about 2 seconds or so.

Subject: [*] FavoritesfromBookmarks
Do you ever wish that your Internet Explorer favorites were the same as your
Netscape bookmarks? I did. I usually run Netscape Navigator but occasionally
use MS Internet Explorer but didn't have the bookmarks available that I was
accustomed to using.
Running this Applescript will replace your Internet Explorer "Favorites"
file with
your Netscape Navigator "Bookmarks" file on your hard drive. When started, it
gives you a choice to backup your old favorites file or delete it. Backups
are given a random number filename and stored in a newly created folder,
"Backups of Favorites."
The next time you start Internet Explorer, it will recognize this new
Favorites file and convert it to its own format. All the Netscape bookmarks,
including folders, remain intact. Explorer 4.0 adds its own formatting and
icons automatically.
Software and Hardware Requirements: Internet Explorer 3 (or above); Netscape
Navigator 3 (or above); Applescript extension; System 7 (or higher); and any
Mac that can run the above software.

Subject: (A) AppleScript question
My question was why an AppleScript would start up with a run or quit
dialogue box on one computer but not on others. And the answer is...
The "Never Show Startup Screen" box in the Save dialog wasn't checked on
that one.
Open the offending script in the Script Editor, choose "Save as..."
from the file menu and in the *almost* standard file dialogue there
appears two check boxes at the bottom. Check "Never Show Startup
Screen".
Thanks to John Rethorst, Bo Bjulen, and John Feinberg.
Why I checked the box on three computers but not the fourth (and didn't
realize it), Ill never know.
As an interesting sidelight, John also wrote:
Having said this, there is an even better way to create clickable icons

If you paste this text into the Script editor and save it as an

Subject: (A) Program to quit programs
In response to my request for a program that runs in the background and
will force any running programs to quit after a few minutes of non-use, I
received the following suggestions:
Quit-it 1.2.3, The Tilery, ProcessWatcher 3.0, Quitter and one offer to
write something if I couldn't find anything.
Quit-it will ask the user if they want to quit after the last open window
is closed, so that should work (except for students who dont know to click
the quit button!).
Quit-it is the only one that works automatically. However it doesn't work
with E-Doc 1.0.21e which came with Haley Hahn's Internet Yellow Pages.
Even with the "Try harder" option checked. Oh, well, it seems to work with
everything else we have.
My next problem is finding a way to pay for it since I work at a state
institution and they insist in paying by purchase order...

We at the Info-Mac would like to appologize for the messages many of you

The problem has been corrected and should not occur again.

Subject: [!] Server errors fixed, please read!
Hi all,
This is important.
As many of you know, we had a severe problem with our ListSTAR server at
StarNine last week. Here's what happened. Apparently, the ListSTAR server
ran out of disk space, which resulted in the address list files being
damaged, causing several 159K ListSTAR Log files to be sent to many
subscribers. Luckily, the list admin at StarNine was able to delete several
thousand of the queued messages before they ever went out, so not everyone
received the errors. Nonetheless, our sincere apologies for the unwanted
messages.
That said, let me add that these situations happen on occasion. No one's
perfect, and things go wrong. Dealing with the problem itself is often
tricky and time consuming. During these times, we really need people to
help us by NOT reporting the problem over and over again, or, worse, being
rude or insulting. Right now, we're sorting through literally hundreds of
copies of this log sent back to the digest, some with rather offensive
comments attached.
Folks, please don't ever report a list problem or complain about a server
error to a list. Just think what would have happened if Info-Mac wasn't a
moderated list? Instead of receiving a couple of these errant messages,
everyone on the list would be receiving those hundreds of copies,
engendering even more complaints and pointless messages. All that sending
such problems to the list does is worsen the problem, with the possibility
of worsening it exponentially.
As every copy of the digest says:
* Please send administrative queries to .
So, in the unlikely event that we should have another server meltdown,
please consider two things. First, all the moderators subscribe to the
digest and will be alerted to problems just like any other subscriber. We
also have the benefit of logs and status reports and things like that to
alert us to problems, so there's no need to report problems you suspect
might be widespread. Second, if you must report a problem, report it to the
administrative address of , not to the list itself.
That way we can handle the mail far more easily than if it's clogging up
our moderation system, as is happening right now.
Thanks for your time.
cheers... -Adam

Or you can also write a really simple AppleScript to do it yourself. Write:
tell application "Finder"
quit
end tell

That sounds like bad SCSI magic to me. What do you have hanging off the
chain? The SCSI chain on that machine is internally terminated on the
motherboard. The internal drive and CD drive shouldn't be terminated (and
almost certainly aren't). If you have external devices, the last one
should be terminated. However, SCSI can be really wierd, even if you do
things "right". You might try adding a feedthrough terminator to the
external chain, just to see if it improves the situation.
Note that a bad internal drive might be messing up the SCSI chain, though
the other way around is more likely.
A continuing cache problem could possibly be causing problems, if you're
getting corrupted info written to the drive. This doesn't seem likely to
me, though. You can check that out by just removing the cache and
reformatting the drive. If everything starts working, you'll know...
If it's the motherboard, you're in trouble, unless you're still under
warantee. I seriously doubt your problem has anything to do with the
processor card, but Other World Computing
is selling
604/150 cards for $32. That would make your machine a PowerCenter 150,
which is basically what I'm running (I started with a PowerCurve). That
would increase your bus speed from 45MHz to 50MHz as well as the
processing increase, and might be worth thinking about anyway...

Error 41 - Finder error / can't load the Finder error
dear info_mac readers,
has anybody incurred in System Error 41? I'm currently working with PMac
8500/120, Mac OS 8.0.
Strange enough, the error occurred without doing anything particular.
As I tried to shut down the Mac after a normal work session, the Mac began
to idle around, refusing to shut down. Then I restarted the computer with
the keyboard combination apple-control-switch key.
As soon as it restarted, I got the System Error 41.
I resolved the problem installing anew the System, but why it all happened??

Subject: Help: adding RAM to PB540c
Dear netters:
I am going to add 32MB RAM to my 540c by myself. Before I put my hands on
it, I really like to get some tips or advices about doing it from some
experienced people.
>From the review article of Macworld of Oct. 97, it says:
"The easiest upgrades on the 540c are through an expansion compartment on
the left side, where you can install a second battery or a PDS card. And
if you remove three screws, you'll open up the guts of the 540c and be
able--with varying amounts of effort and risk to your warranty--to upgrade
the memory, add a modem card, and replace the hard drive with a bigger one
(the 540c comes with a 320MB disk)."
Now the questions are: Which are three screws? The ones on the left side
next to the expansion compartment? Also, is it possible for one to change
the system clock battery without too much work?
Thanks in advance!

1 GB is 2^30 bytes (1 073 741 824), not 10^9 bytes (1 000 000 000).
So your 1 645 883 392 bytes is really 1.53 GB. So (rounded off) your
data do not show any wasted space.

This seems to be an uu-encoded Microsoft Word document. Try with StuffIt
Expander, if not you should download "Mpack 1.5" which can decode
uu-encoded files. Should be in the info-Mac Archives.
You still need an application which can read MS Word files. Is it
possible that the doc is already decoded, but from a version of MS Word
which is not recognized by your application, or MacLink (= Word 97 or
so)?
Best wishes Christian

I've had a similar problem on a desktop system (7100/80). I think the
memory may just be a coincidence. I've seen some notes attributing a
similar problem to a problem with certain disk drives (you might check out
www.macfixit.com). I've gotten around it by using something besides Energy
Saver for sleeping (I use PowerDimmer, a little extension from Power
Computing -- there are some others out there).
You might also try deleting the Energy Saver Preferences (probably not the
problem) and zapping PRAM (a better bet, in this case).

Subject: Mozilla G-3 Woes
Greetings!
The recent transition from my trusty old LC630/40/7.6.1 to a G3/233/96/8.1
went amazingly well.
Including hook-ups and complete file transfer, I was e-mailing and printing
in well under two hours! Truly impressive!
Except, unfortunately, for Netscape 4.04 and 4.05 (including the last bug-fix).
Despite a clean install (not at the same time!) of both the stand-alone and
Communicator versions and offering NS up to 20Mb to frollick in, it simply
cycles through the start-up process, refuses to open and gives me
consistent Error messages 1 or 2.
The few times it does open, it works fine. NS 3.04 and IE 4.01, by
contrast, are rock stable.
I do like NS better than IE, but right now I have no option. Has anyone
found anything similar? Is this a specific G3 or 8.1 problem? That would
make me feel a lot better ;-)

New version of BanzaiSlider should be tested and available early
this summer.
I have added a scrub gesture to delete menu items specifying points
of interest, maps and routes. This scrub gesture augments my old route
editor palette by allowing old route versions to be removed easily to avoid
menu clutter (eg. hm-church1, hm-church2,hm-church3 becomes hm-church
alone).
I have already implemented display for landmarks in BanzaiSlider
made in Steve Weyer's newt native development environment and a Landmarks
editor rapidly prototyped in NTK. It remains to port this editor into newt.
