Subject: [*] 01-98 MacAssistant Tips and Tutorial Newsletter
Here is the January 1998 issue of the MacAssistant Tips and Tutorial
Newsletter. This is a great newsletter that actually helps you use your
Mac better. If you are looking for ways to use your Mac more effectively,
you need to download this one. If you are tired of wading through all the
reviews of software that you will probably never use, the MacAssistant
Tips and Tutorial Newsletter will not disappoint you. Each issue is
packed with useful information that the majority of people can actually
use.
This month the tutorials are:
* Using Fetch 3.03
* Using Internet Address Detectors
* Monthly OneClick tutorial
The MacAssistant Tips and Tutorial Newsletter only has tips and
tutorials. I do not do reviews in this newsletter. While reviews are
useful, I feel that a newsletter that actually tells you how to use your
Mac more effectively is much more useful to the novice and intermediate
users. Each issue includes many tips about using your Mac. The tutorials
are accompanied by graphics that help to understand the article.
Subscriptions are only $12.00 per year and also allows you access the the
MacTalk mailing list. This is a great place to get yor questions answered
very quickly. By the way, this is a full issue so everyone can see what
it is like.
Sincerely

Subject: [*] Amadeus 1.5.7 for Kaleidoscope
This is Amadeus for Kaleidoscope, a colour scheme for use with the
Kaleidoscope control panel by Greg Landweber et al. Amadeus is an
easy-on-the-eye Kaleidoscope scheme designed for long periods of use.
In its year of existence, it has been described by reviewers
as being superior to other implementations of the Apple Mac OS8
platinum appearance.
Amadeus 1.5.7 is a major upgrade that increases Mac OS8 support under
Kaleidoscope 1.8, with popup windows, bevel buttons, and OS8 folders.
As the version number indicates, this is still compatible with earlier
revisions of Kaleidoscope, all the way back to Kaleidoscope 1.5.
Support for Amadeus can be found on the web at the Kaleidoscope Way:
Amadeus will not be seen on the official Kaleidoscope Scheme Archive.
Permission is granted to include Amadeus on the info-mac CD-ROMs.

Anacrostics 1.21 - This may be a new kind of puzzle for you. They're
like crossword puzzles but you're solving a quotation instead. The
quote reads from left to right. You get the letters by solving the
questions below then inserting the letters from them into the quote
grid. The Help screen tells all. This program is not a puzzle game
itself; it's a puzzle-maker. Give it a try and I think you'll find
creating these puzzles as addictive as solving them.

Apollo is a launching utility. You configure a menu containing those
applications, control panels, desk accessories, folders and documents you
use frequently. Then, whatever you are doing, a click of the mouse pops up
the menu and lets you open any of the configured items. You can organise
items into groups, with each group having its own submenu. If a group is
made "active", selecting its name makes Apollo open all the items in the
group seriatim. Apollo can automatically control the sound level and
screen depth for each application, changing them as you switch between
applications. It also has facilities for switching between applications
using the keyboard.
New features in version 2.0 are too numerous to mention, but include lots
of native PowerMac code, completely rewritten configuration, many more
preference options, the ability to assign keyboard alternatives for items
in Apollo's menus, much more control over the look of the popup menu,
including different colours and styles for different kinds of item,
etc etc etc.
Apollo 2.0 is shareware: the fee is US$30, 15 pounds sterling or the
equivalent of US$30 in your local currency. There are significant
discounts for multiple-copy and site licences. There is no upgrade fee for
registered users of previous versions. Registration can be made via Kagi
Shareware. Registration and online registration utilities are provided as
part of the package. Kagi can accept payments by credit card and through
First Virtual.
Apollo 2.0 requires System 7 or later (it is fully compatible with Mac OS

Subject: [*] CURLPushButton 2.4 - a PowerPlant class
A Metrowerks PowerPlant inherited class geared towards helping your
application
become Internet-savvy. It allows you to put clickable buttons in places
(e.g.
your About box) that will look like a URL in a web browser...click on the
URL
and go right to there! Great for listing the web page for your software,
the email address for contact/support, the ftp site where users can get
updates or whatever you want! You list the text, they can see it, copy it
down, whatever... and then just click and visit it. VERY HANDY!! VERY
COOL!!
The class is even set up that the text of the button can say one thing but
then still visit the URL. For example, the About Box displays your name
and you click on it and it visits your personal web page or something.
Point
is, the button can list the URL text or not...it's a flexible class.
There is a demonstration application included in the archive to help you
see how it works as well as help and tips for implimentation. Furthermore
there is a CTYP file that you can use to aid in the editing process
(for use with Metrowerks Constructor).

Subject: [*] DPC Bundle 1.1 - A Desktop Picture Changer
DPC Bundle is yet another set of tools that let you automate the changing
of your desktop picture. Among tools included is an AppleScript and an
application:
- Desktop Picture Changer: Changes the desktop picture from pictures in a
folder. It can choose them randomly or sequentially. It can change the
desktop at specified intervals or just when you run the applet.
- Desktop Picture Aligner: A great little tool that lets you set default
alignment settings for any picture to be displayed on the desktop. For
example, you can specify a picture to be displayed scaled and aligned to
the bottom right corner of the screen.
Changes since 1.0:
The only thing that's changed is Desktop Picture Aligner, which has had
several interface improvements and now lets you align pictures to the
corners of the desktopmac (before you could only align to the sides). It
also lets you change the creator type of processed files.
Try it out. At the very least, you'll find Desktop Picture Aligner useful
(it doesn't need the rest of the tools). Requires Mac OS 8. It's freeware,
enjoy.

NRJ-dule is aN experimental laboratory for exploring the way we produce

and the pathways of energy in living organisms.
Highly interactive, NRJ-dule is aimed at High School/University students,
and Unlike most courseware, it doesn't try to TEACH you, it lets you
discover.
Created after Neurodule, a highly acclaimed simulation of the neuron,
NRJ-dule is more multimedia and better integrated.
NRJ-dule is essentially interactive, so there is little text. However what
text there is, is in French. (we speak french over here in Geneva...)
Teachers here found it allows a much better in-depth learning.
There are 9 modules :
* Simulated running (3 phases of energy production, lactic acid etc.)
* Carbon cycle
* Animal respiration
* Plant photosynthesis
* Dark phase
* Light reaction
* Glycolysis
* Krebs cycle
* Respiratory chain

Subject: [*] Nu Serif 1.1 PostScript Font - A scalable Espy Serif
Nu Serif version 1.1; January 12, 1998; by Martin P. Pfeiffer.
Nu Serif is a font family that brings Apple Computer's "Espy Serif"
bitmap font to the printed page.
Features:
--You can use Nu Serif at any point size--without getting the jaggies.
--The registered version will include bold, italic and bold italic--great
for web browsing.
--Nu Serif, with it's high x-height, is a very readable font, on-screen
and on the printed page
--It's a great companion font for Nu Sans.
About the Nu Serif font family:
Nu Sans is based on Apple Computer's "Espy Serif" bitmap font. Espy Sans
is a font designed by Apple's Human Interface people for easy readability
on computer screens. This bitmap font is used in the Apple Guide screens.
It is a serif companion for Espy Sans.
Now you can use Espy Serif on
your printer as well. I have offered a TrueType and PostScript version of
Espy Sans for several years now. Every once in a while I'd get an e-mail
asking if I planned to do a font based on Espy Serif. So I've been
working on Nu Serif off and on for about a year. I've finally finished
the regular and bold, so I've decided to release this font so that people
can start using it right away. I am currently working on an italic and
bold italic.

normal. If an incorrect password is entered, the comptuer is shut down.
Version 2.0.2 68k is a bug-fix release.
Changes since 2.0.1:
--------------------
- The password is no longer visible when entered. Instead, dots will
show up in the editfield when the user types.
- A bug which caused the control panel to become visible, even if an
incorrect password was entered has been fixed
- Various interface elements have been tweaked to be more MacOS8

Startup Lock 2.0.2 PPC requires a 68k-based MacOS compatible computer

selected becomes empty again, allowing your opponent to make a surprise
move. You may play against another person or a computer player (with
two levels of difficulty). Version 1.1 includes a "fade" option to show

'V&N Lookup' is an easy-to-use program that puts dictionary-power at your
fingertips. It makes use of the dictionaries for the application program
'Verbs&Nouns'. You can use 'V&N Lookup' while you are working with other
text-based applications because it searches for any word that you copy to

similar words in several languages at the same time. It can check the
spelling and translate passages of text word for word.
The application 'V&N Lookup' is part of my 'Foreign Language Toolkit'
project. To try out the program you can download not-protected dictionaries
and play with them. The examples of them are:
