Lately I seem to have more than a few 'Finder Error #10' errors which freeze up the machine and require a forced restart (CMD-OPT-PWR). I get the feeling that it's the Finder running into memory problems. At least that what it used to be when I had similar problems back in the day. So I used to make a copy of the Finder, increase the memory allocation of the non-active copy, then switch, rename and reboot so that the new, memory-increased version was used. Then I found Finder HeapFix, which specifically allowed me to ramp up the Finder's heap memory. But with OS 8 came no way that I can tell for me to specify or increase the memory allotted to the Finder, and I don't think that the dynamic scheme is handling the things I keep trying and adding - iType, WindowMonkey, TypeIt4Me, MyEyes, Help2Icon, etc. Also ActionUtilities, FinderPop, EZNote, Snapz, PopUpCD, NoDesktopCleanup, Eudora Thing et al. I don't use them all or even necessarily load them all, but I do like trying things out and I'm constantly looking for specific solutions for different clients so I can't "just not use the 3rd party stuff". Is anyone having similar problems specifically with the #10 error condition? Or solved it? --------- "Crumpled bits of paper filled with imperfect thoughts" (Rutherford/Robertson) Vincent Cayenne ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 10 Nov 1998 11:26:02 -0600 From: Ted Logan Subject: FreePPP and OS 8.5 Thanks for your input, Peter. My favourite sound is a toilet flush, which I have linked to emptying the trash bin. For some reason this sound does not work with system 8.1 (works fine with 7.5.5 and earlier), though the other sounds do. I can't work out why. At first I thought it was that the link of the flush to the "Empty Trash" didn't work because my trash can said 'Wastebasket' (uk system), but this can't be so as I've seen the same link work on other (pre 8.1 sys) machines which have 'Wastebasket' instead of 'Trash'. Those softwares are progresively more PPC native, so with a 68030 there is nothing to gain. With a 68030, 7.6.1 is the end of the road. Also, it would be incredibly slow, because the system is much bigger and takes a lot of space. There is also the issue of memory. My actual system is taking over 20 megs. So, on a 68030 machine limited to 36 megs, there would be some problems running softwares like Netscape. I have a Umax (Apus 2000 - 603e - 160) running under 7.5.5 with 54xx/64xx update) which I use for small DTP work. Recently for a book I was forced into getting a cartridge drive capable of holding at least 1.5 GB and after studying the reviews etc. I purchased a Syjet. Unfortunately I am now on my fifth drive since mid - June. The last two drives have both failed in what are very similar circumstances, namely either transferring documents from the internal IDE 1.2 GB drive to the Syjet or comparing various folders on the hard drive with the Syjet. By the sound the Syjet makes it is as if the Syjet heads do not appear to be able to find the address they are looking for. The system then responds with an error or hangs up, and if I am copying files I get a file write error. The crash causes physical damage to both drive and cartridge. The cartridges are not recoverable using either Syquest utilities or FWB Hard Disk Tool Kit. The problem initially occurred using Silverlining as the Syjet driver but also occurs using either the new Syquest utilities or PCExchange. PCExchnge not only has had a similar crash but also fails to eject the cartridge. Initially Syquest technical support UK just put this down to bad cartridges and replaced them. When it occurred again they changed drive and cartridges now after a third crash they suggest I have a driver clash. As Syquest has ceased trading I have had to pay for the drive to be repaired and I cannot trustthe information I am getting from the company who is now giving UK technical support. Umax technical support suggest that I should upgrade to a more recent OS and or replace the IDE drive with a SCSI drive. Can anyone offer anymore reliable assistance as I dare not reconnect the Syjet until I have resolved the problem. The system is currently suffering some instabilities as I am now experiencing frequent system crashes, the most common of which is unable to shut the system down as an unknown application has failed to quit . Another fairly common problem is losing the preferences file for MS Office. This does not stop office from running properly but does cause the previous error to appear on shut down. I have also had some application freeze either whilst running or on start-up.
