"Emergency Siren Email Replacement Sound"
If you have an email program, you've likely fallen victim to a boring
email sound at one time or another! That can be overcome, however, with
a new email replacement sound. The "Emergency Siren" email sound is a
great sound to use to announce the arrival of new mail. It is a short,
authentic stereo recording of a fire engine siren.
The sound can easily be used with later versions of Claris Emailer,
Eudora Pro, and others that allow the assignment of sound files as mail
notifiers. Other programs that don't have the option of assigning sounds
can still utilize this sound with the help of "Agent Audio," available
for download at the www.clixsounds.com.
The "Emergency Siren" Email Sound is available in both stereo and mono
versions and can be downloaded here or at the Clixsounds WWW site at:

ChecksQuick(TM) 1.0 Copr. 1998 Bruce A. Pokras - All rights reserved worldwide
Have lots of bills to pay? Write out all of the checks for those bills with
just a few mouse clicks using checks that you tear out of your checkbook!
Enter the names, amounts and account numbers for all of your recurring
bills into ChecksQuick just once. When it is time to pay some bills, just
select the ones you need, put the checks into your printer, and click
"Print." ChecksQuick keeps a running total of the number of checks that you
will need, and the total amount that you are paying.
The only thing that you will need to adjust from month-to-month is the
amount for your variable bills, such as gas, electric and telephone.
However, you only need to adjust the numerical amount. ChecksQuick
automatically translates the numerical amount into words! ChecksQuick also
automatically fills in the current date on all checks, unless you choose to
use a custom date.
Export and import features are available to registered users to create or
use tab-delimited text files in conjunction with spreadsheets or accounting
programs. Has a field for entering expense categories.
Requires: HyperCard(R) Player 2.2 or higher (or equivalent); inkjet printer
which can feed paper the size of your checks (see instructions for more
info); a Mac having a 68030 processor or faster is preferred

Subject: [*] Disk-o-Matic 1.0 - auto-launch items when their disk is inserte
Program: Disk-o-Matic 1.0
Author: Alessandro Levi Montalcini
Price: $10 (shareware)
Register: http://order.kagi.com/?67
Download: http://www.montalcini.com
Disk-o-Matic lets you automatically open an item when its disk
is inserted or mounted. Here are a few examples of what you can
do with it:
- automatically display text or picture clippings with specific
information about each of your removable disks.
- create multimedia CD-ROMs that automatically start up their
presentation when inserted.
- open the document you're working on as soon as its disk is
mounted.
- have your Mac play a different sound for each of your Zip
disks as soon as you slide one of them in the drive.
- automatically run an antivirus or repair utility from an
emergency disk.
- run a complex AppleScript or macro when a backup disk is
mounted.
After a disk has been configured, the Disk-o-Matic application
itself is no longer required to make the auto-launch feature
work. You can take the modified disk to any other Mac without
Disk-o-Matic and still have the chosen item automatically
launched, as long as QuickTime is properly installed and
configured (see below).
Disk-o-Matic takes advantage of a new QuickTime feature that
allows you to automatically launch a specified item as soon as a
disk is mounted. This feature is called "Enable CD-ROM AutoPlay"
and must be turned ON in the QuickTime control panel. Despite
its name, it actually works with all kinds of disks, not just
with CD-ROMs; you can set an auto-launching item for floppy
disks, Zip disks, disk images, and any other removable or fixed
disks except your startup disk. The startup disk can't use this
feature because it is mounted before QuickTime is loaded, but
then you can use the "Startup Items" folder instead.

Subject: [*] MT-NewsWatcher 2.4.0
MT-NewsWatcher 2.4.0 is the latest release of the multi-threaded
derivative of the excellent NewsWatcher, a Usenet client for Macintosh.
MT-NewsWatcher enhanced John Norstad's original with a suite of features
to make reading news fast and enjoyable. Multiple threads allow you to
download group headers at the same time as reading articles, post
articles in the background, and to extract several sets of binaries
concurrently. Sophisticated filtering capabilities let you highlight
those posts you want to see, and kill all that annoying spam.
Version 2.4.0 rolls in John Norstad's improvements for GNSKA compliance,
adds some new features, and contains a whole load of bug fixes.
More information about MT-NewsWatcher is available from:
Simon Fraser
[Note to archive maintainers: this replaces all previous versions
of MT-NW. It should be placed in the /comm/inet/ directory, and
*not* comm/term/ as is the previous version.]

Subject: [*] OTConfigs 2.0
OTConfigs is an AppleScript addition that lets you control OpenTransport
configurations using AppleScript.
Main feature since 1.0:
- Change the configuration of TCP/IP, PPP, and other OpenTransport
control panels without having to open a Control Panel.
New features in 2.0:
- You can Export, Import, Delete, and Rename an OpenTransport
configuration via AppleScript - very useful when moving configurations
from one machine to another or installing a set of configurations onto
multiple machines.
- Using program linking, you can execute an OTConfigs command on a
remote machine.
Sample scripts that exhibit each feature are included. A few of them
are...
- "Export All Configs"
Executing this script exports all configurations currently available.
- "Import Configs"
You can drop any type of OpenTransport configuration files onto this
script application. Dropped files will be imported by appropriate
OpenTransport Control Panels.
In order to move OpenTransport configurations from one machine to
another, you execute "Export All Configs", move the folder containing
the configuration files to the target machine, and drop it onto "Import
Configs". All configurations will be available on the target machine.
Using program linking and scriptable Finder, you could install
configurations without seeing a target machine.
OTConfigs is a $10 shareware. However, you can use all features without
paying a shareware fee, except that you can't execute a command on a
remote machine without obtaining a registration code.

Kurita

Subject: [*] Polish Adjectives 1.0 - foreign language learning
'Polish Adjectives' helps Macintosh users to learn and practise declension
and comparison of adjectives. You can use it for looking words up and
practising vocabulary. The module already contains more than 9,000 Polish
adjectives, with English translations (partially). You can add extra
adjectives, and change or delete the existing entries to suit your own
needs. You can create special groups of adjectives for practising on
(ready made groups include colors, shapes, and much more). To use the

Subject: [*] Russisch fur Juristen - foreign language learning
Russisch f=FCr Juristen (Russian/German), by Richard Wellmann
. This module helps you to study Russian
vocabulary and grammar or to simply look words up in the dictionary. The
vocabulary belongs to a course for German law-students who study Russian.
This is just a small demonstration of the mighty features of verbs and
nouns dictionaries. This databse offers sound support: All nouns included
in this database are spoken by a native speaker. Lookup the declension of
nouns and practice it. Build groups and tables for better overview. Add new
vocabulary...
Or you can merge the module with Verbs and Nouns Russisch-dictionary, which
includes almost 5000 Russian adjectives, adverbs, conjunctions,
subjunctions, prepositions, pronouns, nouns and verbs.
Then you can use the adjective-database to study declension, comparative
and superlative and adverb-forms. You can look up and practice conjugation
of imperfective and perfective regular and irregular (reflexive) verbs in
all tenses. The nouns-database helps you look up and practice all cases and
modi of regular and irregular nouns. Grammar- and thematic-groups help you
gain better access.
Verbs and Nouns Russisch is regularly updated and enlarged. Feel free to
easily enter your own vocabulary; you are effectively supported by
"verbs&nouns" stem-procedures-generator and the predefined Russian grammar
rules. With "Verbs and Nouns Russisch" and the "Verbs Nouns Lookup"-program
you are able to perform spell-checks out of every text-editor-program and
word by word translation. For downloading programs belonging to the

Subject: [A] Text listing of files on disk
Thanks again to all the people who responded to my question on basically
doing the equivalent of generating a DOS directory listing to a file. The
best answer came from Dana Muller (mucho thanks Dana) with essentially the
same answer from Jonathan D. Sweet but lacking the crucial drag-and-drop
step. In case Dana didn't post it, here it is:
...you can do it from the Find File window. So, hit command-F to bring up find
file. Drag the folder you're interested in to the top part where it says
"Find items...whose" It will change to say "Find items in the finder
selection whose" Then change is to "whose *type* is *document* to find all
the documents in that folder. [Jonathan's advice which I find better for
this step is: Set the search criteria to "creation date" "before" "(the
date for tomorrow)"].
Select all the results, or just the ones you want. Now, you can't just cut
and paste. You need to use an application that supports Macintosh drop and
drag, such as the Notepad or Simpletext. *Drag* the items to the notepad.
This will retain all the information, such as modified date. From here you
can paste it into any word processing document. It looks like a mess on the
notepad, but it does retain the tabs, so if you set tabs in the word
processor you will have neat columns again.
That is it. Note Word 6 does not support drag-and-drop but after the paste
from SimpleText into Word, it is easy to insert the text into a table, and
there you have it.

Subject: [Q] couple hardware questions
(1) I have an external SCSI hard drive working fine while connected to a
IIsi and I tried to connect the drive to my PowerTower 240. When I went to
boot, it kept trying to boot from the external, which of course didn't have
a valid system. If I booted from the CD, the external didn't mount and the
system crashed when I tried to mount using SCSIProbe. PowerTower is
running OS 8.0 and IIsi runs System 7.1. My guess is an inconsistent
driver on the external drive. The foramting software that came with the
drive is SCSI Director version 3.1.1. I called Transoft to see about
getting an updated driver, but they pointed me to a $75 software upgrade.
Any suggestions?
(2) Powerbook 1400 prints fine to a Personal Laserwriter LS but when I try
to use AppleTalk to connect it to an old QMS PS 410, the printer doesn't
show in the Chooser. The printer does work fine off the PowerTower, and I
tried pulling the cable from the PowerTower and hooking it to the 1400
(i.e. test a known working path), but no luck. I tried reloading the
printing and network software on the 1400, but no improvement. I tried to
turn on File Sharing between the two machines, but the PowerTower doesn't
see the 1400. Do I have a problem with the 1400's printer/modem port? Any
other suggestions?

Subject: [Q] Mystery File Format
In my perusing of the newsgroups, sometimes files have attachments that
NewsWatcher shows as attachments (which I think are always UUencoded).
However, other messages don't appear as having an attachment but at the end
of the readable text part of the message is something such as the following:
Content-Type: image/jpeg; x-mac-type="4A504547"; x-mac-creator="4A565752";
name="sunrise.jpg"
Content-Transfer-Encoding: base-64
Content-Description: JPEGView Document
Content-Disposition: inline; filename="sunrise.jpg"
And this is followed by a whole bunch of ASCII gobbledy goop. I realize that
this is a JPEG file encoded using base-64 (whatever that is). However,
Newswatcher doesn't seem to be able to convert it and I can't get Eudora Pro to
open it either. What do I need to be able to turn this back into a JPEG file
that I can view?

Subject: [Q] Text listing of files on disk
Find File will let you copy directory listings of virtually any size.
The procedure is the following:
Open Find File. Drag the folder you want a listing of to the Find Items
pop-up menu. That will change to "in the finder selection"
Hit Find.
Select the files you want copied. Choose copy just to copy the file
names.
To copy ALL information option-drag desired files from Find File to the
finder to create a clipping, then double-click the clipping, then copy,
then go to Word and paste. If you align the tabs, you can option-drag
to select columns of text to delete what you don't need.
The option drag hint I got from an old Macxxxx article on Find File:
