The last time Susie and I were there, the beaches were quite narrow and VERY crowded. Cancun is actually a long, thin island, connected to the mainland by manmade land-bridges. There aren't too many big, open spaces that don't have hotels or parking lots on them. I suggest short lines and smaller wing kites. The winds were warm and unstable, and while a big wing might fly better, smaller ones will be easier to transport and be less of a hazard on beaches designed for maximum people with little safety controls. So have fun, but be careful. AKA insurance doesn't cover you in Mexico and a kite accident may be difficult to explain to local police. BTW - Ron Gibbean knows Cancun pretty well so you might give him a call... -- David Gomberg phone 503-996-3083 Box 113, Neotsu OR 97368 USA fax 503-334-9692 Never try to teach pigs to sing - it wastes your time and annoys the pig. = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = Date: Thu, 26 Jan 1995 15:05:24 -1000 From: hfoao033@huey.csun.edu (gina hsiung) Message-Id: <3g9gsk$aqe@nic-nac.CSU.net> Organization: California State University, Northridge Subject: Re: Flying in Cancun David Gomberg (dgomberg@ednet1.osl.or.gov) wrote: > Andrew McNeil asked about flying sites in Cancun, Mexico, and which > kites to take. ...[stuff deleted]... I sent a lengthly message to Andrew, but I wanted to respond to the group as well. Johnny and I went to Cancun in April of 1992. He packed a RevII and several Vic's Fighters. Needless to say, he couldn't find a space to fly his RevII. Most of the hotels are built right on the beach, and there are soo many hotels, that they block all the good wind! He was however able to play with his fighters. We stayed at the Fiesta American Coral Beach Hotel and he stood down on the shore line and flew towards the hotel. He had lots of fun teasing the guests on the balconies who were watching him fly. The weather in April was fantastic, although we weren't used to the 92 percent humidity being from southern Calif, we had a wonderful vacation!! * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Gina Hsiung North Library Annex email: hfoao033@huey.csun.edu Technical Services Dept. The Wife-to-be (the Wife by then) and I are heading out there for a couple of weeks at the beginning of June. Haven't been before (it's in Mexico for those who weren't sure) but it looked pretty nice in the brochure. We're staying in some villagey-like hotel complex down by the beach. Apart from that, I can't tell you much until I come back. If anyone has any experiences, please pass them on. Cheers Andy Andy Wardley || . Johnny had packed two stunt kites and two fighters in his suitcase. The weather was wonderful, except for the humidity, which was at 92 percent. We stayed at the Fiesta Americana Coral Beach. It was brand new and simply beautiful, the pool was almost on the beach, meaning NO room to fly a stunt kite. Johnny was able to fly his fighters, but there were problems with the wind, all the hotels are along the beach and block the breezes, plus there really aren't large spaces of beach available. One afternoon, he stood out in the surf and flew his fighter towards the hotel. He had it close to several of the balconies and many of hotel guests were fascinated by it. We found one kite store that had just opened, but they had only a few kites, and I don't know if they have survived. One of the biggest problems with the beaches is that they are all somewhat "Private". Each hotel has their space, and security guards check everyone (we found that one identifying factor were the hotel beach towels, each hotel has their own color, etc.), and they don't let the "locals" use the hotel beaches. Because we were staying at Fiesta Americana Coral Beach, we could use the beaches for the other two Fiesta Americana hotels. There is so much to see and do in Cancun, that you may not even have time to fly a kite. We visited the Mayan Ruins, saw a Bull fight, took a day trip to Cozamel, snorkeled, went shopping downtown, plus each night we tried out a different night club. We did find the bottled water expensive, so we just kept re-filling our bottles with the hotel's water which is okay and recommend carrying them with you everyday, the heat and humidity makes you very thirsty! Hope this helps if you need more info, email me and I'll respond privately. -=*=-=*=-=*=-=*=-=*=-=*=-=*=-=*=-=*=-=*=-=*=-=*=-=*=-=*=-=*=-=*=-=*=-=*=- Gina Hsiung North Library Annex-8328 email: gina.hsiung@csun.edu Technical Services Dept. (it was GREAT!) i think that you will find that however much you enjoy flying, you will find litle time to fly kites dur to the fact that there is soooo many interesting things to do there. have a BLAST!! I found that the beaches facing the Caribbean had better wind than the ones on the Gulf side. I took kites on only one of my trips there, and flew a stunt kite on the Caribbean side from the surf because the beaches are narrow. Subsequently I have not taken kites again, because I'd rather snorkel or explore ruins; Cancun is one of the premier places for both.
