I'd have to agree that the posting was pretty vague...I did have a chance to talk to Larry this past week-end and know a little about what he is talking about. A group of folks is tryingto take over the chaotic remains ofthe LA Classic Sport kite event. I guess there's been a lot of I'll-do-it-if-they-pay-me-enought on lookers but no action. Larry, and a group of volunteers from the San Diego Kite Club are trying to form a coalition of club members, buisness folks and sponsors to put on some kind ofevent next summer. The group certainly has my support (for whatever that's worth) and I would hope the support of lots of Southern California flyers. Just a side thought here...I never have quite figured out why L.A. doesn't have more flyers than anywhere in the world. The largest city in the country has three AKA members accordingto the latest AKA directory. When one looks at the entire LA basin including Long Beech and Santa Monica, there still aren't as many members as in Sacramento, a city not really well known for kiting and with fewer than a half a million folks...It doesn't make sense and I think we, the kiting community, ought focus some attention on this potential source of new flyers. I, for one, am really happy the AKA is going to Santa Monica next year. I think may the AKA should spend some seed money in the form of advertising to try to get the public involved in the 1996 convention...it could pay BIG dividends. In the mean time, I would encourage everyone to support the San Diego Kite Club in their quest. John makes some very good points, although I'm not sure exactly what he means by LA Basin...did you include the San Fernando valley in that too? There are quite a few AKA members living in the valley (which is considered as part of Los Angeles county/ but not city!). The listings in the AKA directory are by City, and so only those with zipcodes for Los Angeles(as a city) are listed under Los Angeles, etc... I don't have my directory with me here at work so I can't count them all now, but I well investigate further. > In the mean time, I would encourage everyone to support the San Diego > Kite Club in their quest. YES!! Let's support the San Diego Kite Club. Their members come from all over the So. Calif area, and they are trying very hard to promote kiting events in this large region. An AKA member/SDKC member *rejoicing* that finally So. Cal. is hosting the 1996 KTA in San Diego, and the AKA Convention in Santa Monica! I for one have been very discouraged by the lack of interest in kiting in SoCal. What has been needed is a lot of enthusiasm for promoting an event in SoCal. That's when I approached our regional director here in SoCal, Walt Thompson, to discuss what is needed to get a major event off the ground here is SoCal. Unfortunately, some people in SoCal do only think in the "What's in it for me" mode. Basically, this attitude will accomplish nothing. Finally, to let everyone know more information; with the help of Neil Tuthill at ANCAL, he and I have started a company called AIRE AFFAIR KITE PRODUCTIONS. We think it is important for people to have a contact if they are interested in putting on a kiting event.Somebody has to be the "spark" in keeping kiting events going in this area. If anyone would like to give us a hand, please don't be afraid to speak with us via the Internet (LBush14668@aol.com), FAX 310 698-6217, telephone 310 696-5266, or snail mail 13107 E.
