This document briefly describes how to install RIPEM.


OVERVIEW

Unpack the source tree.  (If you're reading this, you must have
done that already, so I won't elaborate.)

Make the RSAREF library in rsaref/test/.  
Make the RIPEM main program in main/.  
That's it.

You can pretty much ignore the stuff in util/.  Likewise, you can ignore
the  server/ tree unless you want to run your own server (which you
probably don't given the fact that multiple servers do not cooperate
under the current scheme).

"make" in this directory, possibly after making changes (for the
name of your compiler, etc.) in "makefile".  For MS-DOS Microsoft
C 7.0, just type "nmake -f rsaref.mak" in this directory.

Make the RIPEM main program in main/.  
For Unix, type "make" in 
this directory to obtain instructions.  For MS-DOS Microsoft C 7.0,
type "nmake -f ripem.mak".  You can use "nmake -f ripemsoc.mak" if 
you have the FTP Software Inc. PC/TCP Developer's Toolkit.

UNIX INSTRUCTIONS

Make "rsaref.a".  Do this by:

	cd rsaref/test 

Examine "makefile" and make any corrections needed for your system,
for instance, the name of your C compiler.  Then type:

	make

Now move to the main/ directory and make RIPEM:  

   cd ../../main

"make" targets are defined for several popular platforms, including SunOS, NeXTStep, HP-UX, and IBM's AIX.  Type "make" to get a list of the platforms.
Then type "make <platform_name>" to make RIPEM for your platform.  As above, you may have to modify the makefile slightly, even if you have a "supported" platform, to reflect site differences.  For instance, I tend to use the GCC compiler, whereas you may prefer the vendor's C compiler.

The make process will run a decryption of a sample message to test 
the correct operation of the newly-built RIPEM.  It will also run 
a benchmark key generation.  If you build RIPEM on a platform not 
previously mentioned in "benchmrk.txt", please email me the timings
so I can include them in the next release.

PC INSTRUCTIONS

The most recent PC version of RIPEM has been compiled only with
Microsoft C 7.0.  Most likely MS C 6.0 would work with few changes,
and I once compiled a very early version with Borland C++ 2.0.

I create my RIPEM directory under C:\CIP\RIPEM.  Microsoft's PWB
has a tendency to hard-code full path names in its .MAK files.  I 
believe I have succeeded in hand-editing out the absolute path names
from the distributed .MAK files, but you may wish to set up your 
RIPEM distribution in the same directory.

Make RSAREF.LIB:

	cd rsaref\test
	nmake /f rsaref.mak

If you have Microsoft C 7.0, you can make RIPEM by 

   cd ..\..\main
   NMAKE /f RIPEM.MAK
	
or if you have FTP Software's PC/TCP Developer's Toolkit,

   NMAKE /f RIPEMSOC.MAK
	
I think that the makefile is also compatible with MSC 6.0.

To test the PC installation, put RIPEM on your path, and do:

   cd ..\test
	testd
	
You should get the message "RIPEM test message decrypted properly."


OTHER INSTRUCTIONS

Richard Outerbridge has ported RIPEM to the Macintosh, under Think C 5.0.2.
I have merged his code into this distribution, but you're on your own in
terms of recreating the necessary project files.
 
I am looking for help in porting to other platforms.  I should think
it'd be fairly easy to port RIPEM to OS/2 or to DOS with a DOS extender
(as in DJGCC), but I haven't gotten around to those yet myself.  There are
other platforms, such as the Amiga, to which I have no access and will
have to depend entirely on your help for porting.
