IFIP'96 - GENERAL INFORMATION BULLETIN NUMBER 1.1 - January 23, 1994 IFIP'96 - 14TH WORLD COMPUTER CONGRESS Canberra, Australia 2-6 September 1996 International Federation for Information Processing IFIP AND ITS CONGRESSES The International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP) is a multinational federation of professional and technical organisations or of national or regional groupings of such organisations, representing almost 70 countries. Its mission is to be the leading, truly international apolitical organisation that encourages and helps the development, exploitation and application of information technology for the benefit of all people. Technical Work within IFIP is done in over 80 Technical Committees, Working Groups, Specialist Groups, Task Forces, etc. A major activity of IFIP is its Congress, held every two years in different places -- 1980 was the last time the IFIP Congress was held in Australia. IFIP Congresses attract thousands of participants: informaticians, managers and administrators. This includes people engaged in research and development, in application and use, in education and training coming from all over the world. IFIP Congresses deal with the core areas of informatics, important applications and with the issues of education and of social implications of informatics. AUSTRALIAN COMPUTER SOCIETY The Australian Computer Society is the professional association in Australia for those in the computing and information technology fields. Established in 1966, the ACS has over 14,000 members and on a per capita basis is one of the largest computer societies in the world. CANBERRA Canberra is the national capital and one of Australia's "greenest" cities. With 250,000 inhabitants it is Australia's largest inland city. It has a lot to offer. The National Convention Centre, is one of the most modern and largest convention venues in Australia. It offers flexibility and state-of-the-art conference technology. The main venue will be equipped with the most advanced technology available for real-time multi-media presentations, by noted international speakers. With its city-centre site in a park landscape and leading hotels close by, it is just a short stroll away from the shopping arcades and near-by Lake Burley-Griffin. EXHIBITION The Exhibition will form an integral part of the IFIP'96 - 14th World Computer Congress. It will feature the display of the latest equipment, software products, and services offered by internationally known companies. ON-LINE EVENT One feature of both the congress and exhibition will be extensive use of computer networks. Details of conference events will be available on-line to delegates from the conference venue, hotels and the exhibition complex. Exhibitors will have direct access to global computer networks from the exhibition hall, for product demonstrations. Exhibitors can offer detailed technical information via video-conference from experts around the world. Delegates can access the global public data networks for electronic mail, voice and video communications from public terminals located in the conference venue, hotels and the exhibition.
