PSALM TWENTY NINE

THE SONG OF
THE FIRST WORKING DAY.

You know how it feels the first day back at work. Well, don't make a
song about it - Sing! It is suggested that the 29th Psalm was sung at
the finishing of David's Tabernacle, 2 Samuel 6:17. From the house of
Abinadab the ark had travelled, but at Nachon's threshing floor Uzzah
put forth his hand to steady the ark and was struck dead. They then put
the ark in the house of Obededom a Gittite, and for the three months it
was there, he was blessed. Then they brought it to the city of David.
The Jews however often used this psalm on the 8th day of solemn feasts.
The 8th day was the first working day.
The psalm begins with the urgency of praise. Give - give - give - to
the Lord. Give Glory and strength. Give the Lord the glory due to His
Name. At times our attitudes do not give any glory to God at all.
Whatever problems we face, God is still on the throne. Ascribe to God
the honour due. Worship the Lord in the beauty of Holiness. Bow down,
do obeisance, adore Him. An attitude of heart is far more important
than a posture of the body. God is more powerful than all our
circumstances.
To describe the Voice of the Lord the psalmist uses an illustration
of the thunderstorms of Lebanon. The God of Glory thundereth. Even
modern science cannot rob a storm of its glory. The voice of God is
mighty in its operation, full of awe, breaking, shaking, striking. Even
the voice of His stillness is potent. Through all our circumstances God
speaks. The main body of this psalm is given to declaring the power of
God's voice. Its impact all around is visible. It divides even flames
of fire. It shakes the wilderness. Then the beautifully descriptive
section ends with, "In His temple doth everyone speak of His Glory."
That is the way to face the week ahead. Speak of His Glory.
Remember, "The Lord sitteth King for ever." Earthly rulers come and
go. The God whose voice causes such tremendous effects and who sat
enthroned upon the deluge of old, is still reigning over all. If the
voice of thunderings seem to threaten, let us remember that His Word
became flesh and dwelt among us. Now, the voice of the Son of God
beckons us to follow Him. Make no mistake, He is still the same God.
What misconceptions have been caused by that phrase, "Gentle Jesus meek
and mild." God's Son is operative in the power of an endless life.
Give - give - give - to Him all the glory!
